We all have friends and family over at the holidays. Hopefully, we can even talk them into playing games. But there is always someone who just loves Monopoly, or Risk, or Parcheesi, or another tried and true mass market game. (My neighbors can't wait to introduce my 11yo son to Risk.)

So, what to do? When they want to play Monopoly, do you pull out For $ale? When they want to play Clue, do you try to get Scotland Yard in there instead? In this geeklist, please offer your suggestions to replace an "Oh No!" game.

I'll start...

I will always try to get this game to the table instead of Stratego, even if it is a little more involved.

It may depend on what they like about Monopoly. This provides a lot of opportunities for trading. It is relatively simple and still has enough luck that an experienced player won't always win.

If it is more about cash and dealing. This is a great game. It still has a lot of luck involved.

Where's......MY CHRISTMAS CHEER?!

If Monopoly is my nan's favourite game then I'll smile and play Monopoly. It's Christmas, a family time for folk to chill out and have a laugh whatever you're doing, and not a time to force your own hobby onto other people.
If anything I'd probably suggest other "mainstream" games around the house like Balderdash, Taboo...Something a little shorter...

Maybe Boxing Day when people are at a loss for things to do I'll drag out one of mine but otherwise, I'm just there to enjoy the day with family....

This scratches the same itch as Monopoly but has a lot more going on in "gamer" terms.

BTW, I like Monopoly.cool

Poleconomy. Similar to Monopoly but oh so much greater. It's got million dollar bills for chrissake! Hostile takeovers, backroom dealings, tenuous alliances, it's sure to send someone home in tears (but who wants a crybaby at the party anyway?)

The Monopoly Houserules which most people play is pretty ugh at times. In that I agree...but some people want to play it...

Or you can play Monopoly by tournament rules. You know, games like For Sale, and other such things which BGG'ers seem to like, hold a similar mechanic, but MUCH WEAKER than Monopoly if one plays by tournament rules.

That is, you need an auctioneer, or someone to handle the auctions. Bidding in auctions, is half the fun of Monopoly, more fun than the trading of Settlers of Catan, and can be quite brutal if someone needs that last property to complete a set, so bidding could go quite high.

Auctions are great to try to get property lower priced as well.

I get the feeling half the people that love bidding and auction games, but hate monopoly, haven't played Monopoly with the right rules.

Monopoly with the right rules, is really fun, and the more people, the more auctions, the more fun it is!

But that's just my two cents.

"Hah!" you say. "Monopoly is for weaklings, let's play Triopoly"
It's like Monopoly, but more so. Figure 6-8+ hours for a full, 3-tiered game with 4 players. No one leaves the table until the games over - for any reason! Once they're done with this, they'll never want to play Monopoly again.

Pre-empt their Risk introduction to your boy. Risk is still a timeless game, but 2210 adds a nice flavor to it.
