Our young friend Steven (affectionately part of the "J.V." team of our play group) was going to head out to serve an LDS mission in Uruguay for the next two years. As we did for my brother Luke, we scheduled our monthly game night to commemorate his involvement and send him off with a bang. This GeekList shows some of the games we played during that game night.

Those involved in sending Steven off were myself, my boy Chance (10 year old - member of the "frosh" team!), Troy 'Clandaith' Davidson, and Devin Hughes. Of course, being the guest of honor we allowed Steven to make the pick of games. Here's what he picked out.

Steven arrived on time but the others were just a bit behind. While we waited and chatted, I pulled out The Confronation to bide our time. I told him that as soon as we pulled it out that we would have someone show up. Sure enough, as we are setting up the pieces and explaining the movement, Troy showed up. He didn't mind watching as we waited for Devin and we played. I was the Sauron side and we thoroughly kicked butt over Steven's Fellowship. Frodo went down to a Warg. A fun part of the game included Gandalf and The Balrog taking each other out above Moria. Very thematic indeed. Devin showed up as we finished so we didn't switch sides on the game.

With the gang all there, we gave Steven the choice of what game to start us off with. Well, J.V. team members evidently can't take the pressure very well as he waffled on what to choose. He finally saw LNOE and made the decision. Steven was the Preacher, I was the QB, Chance was Billy, and Devin was the Sheriff as Troy challenged us with the Zombies in the Burn 'Em Out scenario.

The game started off very well for the heroes - Chance started with a Gasoline and Devin got the Scenario Search card to pull a dynamite. I took a wound on the first turn and Troy continued to harass me with several Shamble cards to keep Zombies at every where I turned so I couldn't sacrifice a turn to heal up. He thought he had me dead with a Zombie Card but Billy was in the same square and was able to take the wound instead. I kept trying to run as the Sheriff blew up one spawn pit while Billy was positioning for another. Steven's Preacher was an Avenging Angel as he ripped through zombie after zombie - he was not to be denied! I was able to run to the garage and pick up Chance's gasoline after he torched the second spawn pit. Troy had me cornered but a couple good hero cards from other players kept me alive and a lucky six on the movement dice allowed us to run around the zombies and blow the third spawn pit for the victory.

This game was the first time our group played the game without me being the zombies. I fear Troy relished his role a bit too much and did an excellent job despite our heroes getting the scenario items quickly. It was a fairly quick but fun session of LNOE!

This was a game that came from Steven's collection and was a first for the rest of our group. We quickly got our foam guns and got in to the spirit of the game. Troy was quickly a target (possibly as a payback for being the Zombie player or maybe just because he is fun to kill) and acquired two wounds in the first two turns. I was quietly pulling ahead and was hardly a target until one turn had a huge pot ready to be split and I took a wound. Steven, Troy and Devin took $35,000 each while Chance and I had to look on wounded. Our last turn ended with me using the 'Bang! Bang! Bang!' card but all the players were alive at the end of the game and Steven beat me with $90,000 to my $85,000.

This game seems like a fun, quick game to play especially in a party atmosphere. We laughed at the thought of playing this with family and being able to 'legally' point a gun at your mother-in-law!

Steven's next choice harkened back to one of the first games that we picked up as I was making the transition from CCGs to board games. He saw Sucking Vacuum and chose to go down Nostalgia Avenue. This was a new game for Troy and Devin but it had been awhile for the rest of us as well. While I did make a few mistakes in remembering rules, Steven and Devin armed themselves with the rules and FAQ and were able to straighten me out. Of course, the accent rule was in force. Troy was the Chimp with a Hispanic accent, I was the Afro-American Chinese man, Steven was the aged Yoda, Chance was a Surfer Dude, while Devin played the cute brunette with a strangely masculine Wisconsin accent that suddenly changed to Pirate somewhere in the middle of the game. While my Chinese accent went good and bad during the game, I did manage to dope slap better than I received and with the help of a Jet Pack was able to take off from the Station with Troy's Chimp in the Shuttle. It was a good day to see the rest ready to burn up in re-entry!

After perishing on the space station, Devin had to call it a night. The rest of us weren't quite done though and Steven made the call for Race for the Galaxy. We shuffled out the home worlds and nobody got New Sparta. This is a bit of a relief to the rest of us because we don't play this game enough and the military strategy is still one of the most obvious in our group. Now, without New Sparta in the start you'd think we would try something else. Well, that wasn't to be. We all were a bit muddled in direction and each tried their hand at military. It wasn't enough and there weren't many Produce/Consume actions called either. I had a few Alien cards out but was sure I was going to get my but kicked. When Troy finished his 12th card we all counted up points. Chance had 22. Troy had 27. Steven had 28. I was at 29. A relatively low scoring game in my mind and I was surprised to see that I had won. If we would have went one more turn, I believe Steven would have consumed for a few more victory points and been able to take the lead.

Having finished Race for the Galaxy, we were going to call it a night. A bit early for out game group but Steven had to speak at church in the morning and that wouldn't be good to keep him out with the snow that we were getting. I did corner Troy and Steven to show them the prototype that I am working on. This is a Book of Mormon themed strategy game. They were interested in what I had and offered some good advice to keep my process going. It's good to have a good group of guys with such a varying gaming experience to draw from as I work on my game.

Now the guys had left after reviewing the state of my prototype game. However, I did keep Steven's copy of Thebes to try out. So, Chance and I sat down to it on Sunday afternoon and had a rip roaring time digging out the antiquities in this game. Yes, it wasn't part of the farewell game night but since I did get the opportunity to play it because of the previous night's event, I am adding it to the list. Chance and I were pretty neck to neck on things but Chance didn't go after any exhibits. At the end of the game I was three points down before exhibits and then jumped ahead by 14 or so. Interesting game and I can see it being a nice intro game to go along with Ticket to Ride for newer players.
