This was a busier than normal week for FtF games for me, as I took off work Thursday afternoon to do some boardgaming (hey, I run the place, I'm allowed to do this) and then had a 12 hour gaming day on Saturday. Next week it will likely only be Saturday, although I may get together with a friend Friday night for some wargaming. Unless I get a better offer, however my lady friend is away for 3 weeks, so I think I'm going stag this week.

We led off Thursday afternoon with this one. While all three of us (me, Andy and Shannon) all like the game a lot, we were rusty from not having played it in a month or so. I played a really terrible game, ending up with only my original 2 rooms, 4 empty spaces, no veggies and no boar. Needless to say, I lost, with 21 points. Andy had a very solid game overall, and racked up a bunch of bonus points, and cruised to victory with 41 points. Shannon almost split the difference between the 2 of us, ending up with 32.

This was Andy's 3rd time playing Blox, my 2nd and Shannon's first. I like this game, and even wrote a review of it. While its not a "play every week" game to me, I think its a nice diversion for 30-60 minutes. We screwed up a major rule in this one, which while it probably didn't affect the scores too much, took out some of the interactivity in the game (we let people move right to towers and demolish them if they had the cards, missing the rule where you couldn't move through a square of the color of any of the blocks in a tower first). Still, it was fun. Shannon took the win with 34 points, I was 3 behind with 31 and Andy was 3 back of me with 28.

Andy and Shannon had played this a number of times before, and it was my first time playing. I like this game, the bidding and building and strategy aspects all appeal to me. What I didn't focus on was making sure I had the majority of certain colors as the game moved into phase 2 and phase 3. Not surprisingly, I ended up in last, although not too terribly, with 116 points. Shannon was in 2nd with 123 and Andy took his 2nd game of the day with 131 points.

Fast forward to Saturday, where Andy, Shannon and I were joined by Mark. I won this one handily, with 52 points (Shannon could have had 49, and chose not to take the points on the last turn because he was going to lose anyway). I used a combination of several good tenants and some timely received rent cards to cruise to victory. This game is okay. I'd play it again if it was suggested, and I'd probably ask "Well, what about game X?" first.

Everyone else had played this one except me, and the rules weren't tough, so I jumped right in. I ended up building a casino that was basically a hangout for drunken slot players. I had only one restaurant, and about 6 or 7 lounges and fancy lounges, but no nightclubs. I had a bunch of slot areas and I think 2 table game areas. Still, by connecting the casino and the hotel, having a few corner bonuses and scoring respectably on income and people, I took my 2nd game in a row, with 54 points. Then it went Mark, Andy, Shannon with 50, 47 and 43. I liked this game. A pretty quick play and challenging, without too much luck involved. I'd play it again.

This was my 3rd time playing this, the 2nd time for Andy and Shannon, and the first time for Mark. The last time we played it was just the first 3 of us, and the game was good, however it did suffer from people producing multiple goods and there being less barter. This time, however, there was much more trading. Oh, and I've yet to win a game of this, and it appeals to me more and more (am I a glutton for punishment?). This time, on 2 separate occasions, I forgot to take enough resources to power all my blocs and it put me way behind. Mark stumbled through his first play, and Andy and Shannon were in a race to the end, Shannon going a "high debt/build banks route" and Andy going a "no debt, build in demand products" route. When the smoke cleared, Shannon beat Andy 109-107, and had Andy played his last turn slightly differently it would have been 109-108. Mark was way back with 62 and I had an embarrassing 44.

After a lunch break, Shannon and I headed over to the FLGS to play with a different group. We arrived earlier than most, so we started what we thought would be a quick 2 player game of Dominion. Well, it might have been quick had the cards we drafted not caused us to both empty 40+ card decks a few times. Others watching were pretty impressed, though. Shannon went a gardens route, I pushed for provinces, and I eked out a 49-47 victory.

Now that the crowd was here, we got an 8 player basic game of Formula D going. I was eager to play this, as my copy had just come in (we used another player's copy for the game, though). It was exciting as promised! I started fairly far back in the pack and got as high as 2nd before getting passed. Perhaps I was too conservative, as I ended the game with about 5 wear points. 3 players didn't finish the race, and we paid our respects to their next of kin. Thanks to the flaming wrecks, I was able to finish in 3rd place. I thought I had 2nd locked up, and then Bob got through the last turn in 5th gear, blowing out most of his final wear points, and shot into 6th gear on the final stretch, finishing way ahead of me (I came through the turn in 4th gear). I really liked this game and look forward to playing it a lot more.

After the big Formula D game, we split into 2 groups. The group I was in (me, Bob and Tom) played a 3 player game of CoP. I was Tonga, Tom was Samoa and Bob was Hiva. I had garbage luck finding islands, while Tom was wracking up all sorts of nice islands (he found Hawaii and New Zealand, while Tahiti didn't come out in the game). Bob meanwhile had some decent islands he built up, and on the last turn took a small island from Tom and resettled it, which was a 4 VP swing, allowing him to win with 26 points to Tom's 25. I was in 3rd with 21 1/2. I probably would have done better had it not taken me 3 turns to conquer Fiji. I outnumbered the local defenders 6 to 4 in the first battle, and lost, 5 to 4 in the 2nd battle and lost, and 6 to 4 in the 3rd battle and won with just 2 guys left. That cost me at least 1 turn and probably another 2-3 victory points minimum. A good game, one I look forward to playing again.

This one is only on the list by a technicality, because the only face I'm seeing when I play this is my own reflected in the plexiglass. I'm playing out a scenario solitaire (scenario 40, for those interested) and I'll put up a session report on it when I'm finished.
