Well I'm two years in and I've had an absolute blast in my 2nd year. I thought it would be hard to match the experiences of my 1st year but how wrong I was.

Like many of you, the past 12 months have seen my brain and fingers log a ridiculous number of hours and keystrokes here at BGG.

A big thank you to the people that make BGG work - this really is an awesome place to call my 'Second Home'.

An even bigger thank you to the many people that read my contributions. It is your support and encouragement that keeps me coming back.

The biggest thanks of all goes to my wife Patty as she is more than understanding.

So what happened in '08?

Well Reviews continued to by the mainstay of my time here at the Geek. I only logged a total of 31 new reviews in '08 but I am very happy to have evolved my series of 'Detailed Reviews' further. Some of these offerings ranged well into the 5000+ word range and whilst length does not always equal quality, the feedback has been good.

In all those 31 reviews attracted a total of 1,672 thumbs for an average of 53.9 thumbs per review. Considering that I used to get excited when a review attracted 10 thumbs, I'm pretty stoked by the feedback.

For those wondering how to attract thumbs I recommend looking at the quality of what you put out. The number comparison from this year to last definitely suggests that people like detailed analysis and good layout. But I also recognise the importance of profile. Whilst I'm not a BGG luminary, this year I had the benefit of a prior 12 months worth of reviews and the name/avatar may be starting to stick in people's memory banks.

The review I am most proud of is that for Kingsburg. It was written a good 12 months after release so I didn't benefit from being the 1st on the scene. I'm also happy because I don't regard myself as the greatest analyst and this game has many hard core followers with that 'hard core euro analysis' bent. To get over 200 thumbs for this review kind of tells me I might be getting better at this gaming caper.

Kingsburg

I also really enjoyed writing the Alhambra series of reviews. It's a top notch game in my opinion and it didn't seem to get a lot of press. I hope my reviews changed that a little.

Alhambra

I've doubled the number of Session Reports I've written this year to a total of 30. This is due to playing Hero Quest with my 3 sons all year and it has been a wonderful journey. Not only have I had the chance to share that journey with the BGG community (who have been very responsive and supportive - 540 thumbs over 14 reports for an average of 38.5 thumbs per Report)

but I have also learned so much about the lads, grown as a parent and seen the boys grow as individuals and as gamers. This session of reports will be a set of memories that I will look back on in the years to come with great fondness.

The journey started way back in January '08 and links to all reports can be found at the bottom -

I managed to add another 58 games/expansions to the collection this year to bring the grand total to 338. I can see this slowing in '09 as the list of unplayed games is growing too quickly and I want to play less more often.

In '08 I managed to log 1,510 plays for an average of 125.8 per month. In all I have played 162 different games in '08.

NB - All stats are accurate to the 20th of December '08.

All of the above work helped me get a fair swag of Geek Gold this year to top out at 1,131.56.

That helped me acquire another 30 new MB's this year and give out 113.46 in GG tips.

My MB badge count sits at 68.

I've probably been a little slack in this department, having only added a further 1,078 tags this year bringing the total to 3737.

Looks like a Summer Holiday project.

Now for the really good stuff. BGG throws up some amazing things to take part in and I've done my best to be involved in as many programs and events as possible.

d10-1 100 Push Up Challenge - I first discovered this by stalking a GeekBuddies Profile and saw the link he had put up. Essentially this is about a bunch of Geeks trying to discover if they have a manhood and 'committing to the Program'. That program involves a series of staggered stages to enable participants to perform 100 consecutive 'good form' push ups in only 6 WEEKS!

4 of us have achieved this great feat, many of us still push on. The challenge itself is somewhat fun, but the comararderie and BS that we all talk along the way has really been the highlight - Great Fun.

You can join us here -

100 Push Up Challenge

d10-2 SoccerGeeks F.C. - I created this guild back in very late '07 and it has been an amazing place to spend some time and chew the 'footballing fat' with many a like minded geek. With 112 members in our first year I feel like I have added something to the Geek that may last a good while.

You can find our little Guild here -

SoccerGeeks F.C.

d10-3 BGG Fantasy Football - I've participated again in the '08-'09 Season of the BGG Fantasy Football League. My team 'Torreds' are in the Top 5 at present but the winning is really irrelevant. It's just great fun to manage a team and watch the disasters unfold!

d10-4 Relay for Life - I ran in my 2nd Relay for Life this year to raise money and awareness into Cancer. The response from BGG was amazing, both in dollars and the personal experiences that people shared. Together we raised a total of $1,428.

You can see how BGG's unfolded here -

I'm Doing the Relay for Life

The events of the day and the results can be found here -

Relay for Life 2008 - Thank You to BGG

d10-5 The Pact - I was looking to play more games with two good friends in David and Heather as well as playing more of my collection in an attempt to identify what games are truly great and which ones needed to go. The Pact was formed and we are playing through our combined collection of 400+ different games one month at a time. I really look forward to these sessions.

4 Friends, Some Beer and a Gaming Place

d10-6 The Wife and I - As our lives get busier each year, I also wanted to make sure that there was time for Patty and I to spend quality time together. We chose 5 games and created a monthly Competition that lets us have fun and be competitive at the same time.

Making Quality Time - A Couple get back to the Gaming Table

d10-7 Giving Back - I enjoy being a part of many monthly and annual Geek Lists and the like, such as Most Games Played, Best Game Played this month, Blott's TGIF Thread and Lanky's 10 Question Series. This year I saw a need to bring together all of the wonderful contributions associated with Essen into the one place.

It looks like this -

Essen 2008 - Geek List Central

I was also really excited that I was able to give something back by working with other Geeks to get a copy of Descent: Road to Legend sent to Universal Head. His player aids are amazing and it was the least we could do.

Headless Hollow - Board Game Reference Sheets

d10-8 New Adventures - In November '08 I managed to find a rather amazing place in the Forums. It was the 'League of Extraordinary Heroscapers'. It's a place dedicated to older Heroscape Players and serves as a place to hang out, share stories and revel in all things Heroscape and wise. Not meeting the age criterion (my choice, they would have let me in) I joined and pledged my service as the Guild's Squire. Now I inhibit those forum pages as an RPG character of sorts. By far the weirdest thing I do on the Geek but it helps my Geek Level reach 11!

The League of Extraordinary Heroscapers! A Society for venerable elderly 'Scapers

d10-9 Call me Crazy - Then there was this weird little event in early December. I started a live dialogue with the BGG community for a 90 minute period. The aim was to get BGG'ers to convince me to get Android. There was one copy at my FLGS, patty was working there but I only had 90 minutes to make the decision before she shut the door. Weird but fun at the same time.

Watch the dialogue unfold here -

Android - 90 Minutes to Make a Purchase Decision

d10-0 Christmas Time - I took part in my 2nd International Secret Santa this year and also sent out 5 Cards in Connie's Christmas Card Exchange. Great events both.

Then there were the new BGG skills I acquired in '08.

d10-1 Trading - Yes I finally began to trade this year thanks to the Aussie Math Trade held in latish '08. I made some mistakes but got some great loot to. Its taken me a while to succumb to the logic of trading but when the collection went past 300 I couldn't deny it any longer. I will be trading once or twice a year from now till forever.

d10-2 Wiki's - I learnt how to create and edit Wiki's thanks to the creation of SoccerGeeks F.C. and the 'Hundred Push-up Challenge'.

d10-3 Images - I finally uploaded some images to BGG. They weren't to the database however as I don't think mine are of good enough quality, but I have several images in my Personal Gallery as they were used in my Relay for Life Geek List.

And so, whilst I have a few free days scattered between now, Christmas and the New Year 2008 is almost up.

I know I have missed some things here but that is a pretty fair wrap up.

As a self confessed thumb whore I must end with the final Thumb Tally for the year.

I currently sit at 9,435 which is a staggering 7,435 increase in the past year.

Till next year - Geek Hard or Go Home!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Everyone!
