I found BoardGameGeek in February of 2008. I had heard of it previously but hadn't bothered to check it out due to lack of interest. However, in early 2008 I actively decided to start playing more board games, and used it as a tool to replace one of my previous hobbies (CMGs; specifically DDM and Dreamblade) with a new hobby.

Ooo, a parade!

What was I looking for when I found the geek? A board game ranking? A discussion of the relative merits of Talisman characters? Previews of upcoming cooperative games? Doesn't matter, it's all here, along with some pretty cool people to boot.

Nice place you've got here.

(Now what's the over/under on how many minutes it'll take for someone to come along and quote Python? "Wouldn't want anything to happen to it, would we? Things break, colonel!")

Even though I originally registered in 2003 just to buy a copy of
Can't Stop I didn't know what BoardGameGeek was until this year...

It was January 2008 when I was first introduced to Settlers of Catan. The night of my first game I used my Christmas money to order my own copy along with the 5-6 expansion. I started a weekly match of Settlers.

A friend of a friend who started coming brought Puerto Rico and mentioned there was a website that rated it higher than Settlers of Catan. surprise

After spitting my coke all over the table I demanded the name of the website and for us to play the "so called" best of all board games.

Now, Rob and I are good friends and co-host a weekly game night and try to increase our game collection with online orders of 8-12 games at a time.

In June, my fiance Mary introduced me to the Empire Builder series of crayon-rail games. In August, while researching information on British Rails, I stumbled upon this site that had information on the entire series, plus some web-published versions. After lurking around a few weeks, I decided to join in September. My collection continues to grow, mostly through thrifting, which I was already doing. The difference now, is that I thrift with greater knowledge than before. I've added a few previously ignored abstracts. My favorite game that I didn't know about before is Hive.

I'm really enjoying this new family that I've found. It is a lot of fun getting to know my fellow geeks and their games.

I remember buying Ticket to Ride, and googling it later for reviews: finding BGG.
Initially I found it very hard to use being unused to Wikis, but as I searched more games and bought new games, it became invaluable.
Getting rule clarifications and downloading translations is..awesome
Battle line was a game I read many reviews on BGG, I actually didn't expect to like it, but ,boy, I love it to death.

I joined the Geek in March 2008, after lurking for about a year. I discovered the site while googling for reviews, and quickly became addicted to the wealth of information available. It's hard to pick a single game out of the lot I purchased this year, as most of my recent game-purchases were, in one way or the other, influenced by this community. I currently enjoy Pandemic a lot, as it's my first cooperative game. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have tried it, if not for the many positive reviews here.

I'm truly grateful to all the people from around the world that contribute by writing reviews, taking astonishing photographs, or starting the occasional flame war. Thank you all!

Yep,

I registered in January.

I had come to the geek before (since august 2007 in fact) but had never registered as I posted threads and participated primarily on Tric Trac (the french equivalent). I finally registered here for a T&E contest between TT members. I didn't start posting until september though when I started my internship on the days I didn't have much work.

Anyway, the game I chose is Monster Mash a monstruous game from my youth that I really really love and that is still a hit for me and that every friend I introduced to loved.

Cheers,

Merry Christmas to you all!

My other house-mate and I were looking for a 3rd person for our place in January this year and we interviewed over 50 people.

Cubillas stood out from the crowd as instead of talking about cleaning duties, how we divided up the bills and other mundane things he saw the boardgames I had in a bookshelf and we got chatting about gaming. He also mentioned he had a copy of Shanghai Trader, which I had fond memories of playing years ago.

We're still yet to play this one, despite it sitting on the shelves for most of 2008.

When I found out he was also a cricket fan then what could have been a pretty difficult choice was a very easy one indeed.

One downside of sharing with a gamer is that we can get pretty engrossed in whatever we're playing; I particularly recall how difficult it was to front up to a day of boring meetings on complex topics after playing Paths of Glory until 3.00 am the night before.

Anyway, with Cubillas' encouragement I joined BGG and have pretty much gone from there.

We attend various boardgaming events in the Australian Capital Territory and regularly host boardgame nights at our place as well as encouraging other non-gaming friends and neighbours to try some of the simpler games we have.

I'm delighted to have found BGG through the encouragement of Cubillas and look forward to many more years of enjoying (and supporting and trying to contribute to) the Geek!

So there I was in late September, unemployed and bored out of my mind. 'Do you know what' I thought 'I need to find some people in London to play a game of Risk with, that'd be a nice diversion from reality for a couple of hours'.So I sat down to my computer and started googling frantically for Local Risk players, but instead accidentally ended up here.

To cut a long story short: I never did find nearby Risk players, but I did find a site full of delightful people and fascinating games (and via them I discovered a local gaming group which plays far better games than Risk). So now I've stopped lurking and have eventually set up an account, it looks like I'm here to stay.

Anyway, I chose Dominion because it was the game I treated myself to when I found a job and got my first pay-cheque at the end of October. I fear that it may be the start of a long and beautiful obsession.

Arkham HorrorSo after working late nights at my job for almost 7 years, a morning shift opened up for me (early morning I might add) and even though it was a slight pay cut, I took it so I could spend more time with my girlfriend (soon to be wife) and our newborn daughter.

While working early mornings was a bit of a switch for me, I soon discovered that it was very boring. I work in tech support and nothing seems to happen during my shift other than mopping up server issues from the night before.

It was around this time I started getting back into my gaming group on a more regular basis, now that I had more nights free. I have been friends with this group of guys for over half of my life, and we mostly play RPG's. We played the occasional board game, and one night, being short players for a DnD session, we busted out our old copy of Talisman for some self abuse. Even though we couldn't find the rules anywhere, we remembered them for the most part and we had a good time.

The next day at work, I googled the game to see if I could download the rules somewhere, and I found this place. I had been on the site before, for some odd reason or another, but this was the first time I started digesting what I was reading. Soon, every morning at work from 5am-9am I had this site up on my flatscreen, reading a review, checking out a geeklist, or researching a game for a possible purchase.

I started reading about Arkham Horror, and I decided I had to own the game. I found an Ebay seller that actually lived near my hometown, worked out a deal with them to buy the game, picked it up, and sprang it on my group the next gaming session.

Haven't looked back since. I now own almost 200 games, I have 3 bookshelves filled from top to bottom, my girlfriend thinks I am crazy (but I still get her to play a game every once in awhile) and I am having a blast. I cannot wait until my daughter gets old enough to start playing some of these games with me.

I have finally registered earlier today, after months of lurking around the website researching games, and getting incredibly excited about all the games out there.

The Family Game was a tradition of my childhood, and something which I have very fond memories of. Canasta was THE family game, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for Careers, Totopoly and Cluedo. I became aware of Settlers in about 1999, and did in fact buy a copy, but I had no one to play with. I got married about that time, and my wife is absolutely NOT a gamer. I have managed to get her to sit through a couple of games of Carcassonne with me, but it's just not her thing.

What happened to change all this was, sadly, the death of my Mother. Mum was always the social one of my parents, so I began to look around for things to do with my Dad which would be fun for everyone, and so I suggested a weekly games night to him and my sister's family. In so doing, I have discovered that two of my nephews have the gamer gene! At last I have people to play games with!

I have selected Alhambra for this list, as it has been a big hit with this group. Game choices are limited by the fact that my Dad has had a couple of major strokes in the past which have affected his vision, and make it impossible for him to cope with any game requiring extensive reading, or scanning a large area. Alhambra fits the bill with it's language independent pieces, and focused areas and decision making.

I've been reading the Geek for about 3 years, finally decided to sign up this fall. I had been pretty much out of gaming for about 15 years, so when I finally went into my FLGS in Salt Lake (Game Night Games), I was confronted by a huge variety I'd never heard of, and I needed a place for reviews. The Google brought me to The Geek.

Living in Glendale, CA now, I have a couple of good FLGSs I visit regularly, and they're my main way to learn about new games. But I never would have heard of Genji without the Geek. Would have been a shame, because the theme (courtly love in any culture) is a favorite of mine, and this is the first game I've seen that gives the theme a decent treatment. (Now just to get together with some willing opponents. Usual response from gaming friends: "So you're writing poems to woo princesses? Riiiight.....")

If I'd known of the Geek just a couple of months sooner, I would have avoided a costly mistake, Master Thieves. Gorgeous bits, but a storage space hog and not much of a game.

I originally found Carcassonne on Xbox Live earlier this year. My wife and I enjoyed it, so we bought a copy at Gen Con.

I later found that, due to my lack of attention to detail, I had actually bought Carc: The Discovery. Not a bad game, but not what I thought I was buying.

I then went online to find out what the original game box looked like and how many spinoffs there were. I wound up here, and have been loving this little community ever since.

Edit: ironically, there was a spelling error in the section where I talk about my lack of attention to detail.

Hello all!

I joined BGG in March of this year, and what a great place this is!
I get on first thing every morning.

I started out here by looking at a card game I had just played at a friend's house- Guillotine. From there I just took off.

BGG's geeks' reviews and session reports have helped me in deciding to buy not only one game I love, but ALL of the games I love. Here they are in the order I purchased them:

Guillotine
Fluxx
Bohnanza
Pit
Bohnaparte
Puerto Rico
Blokus
Power Grid
Race for the Galaxy
Agricola
Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm
Dominion

BGG is not only a tool for researching games, I have learned, but is a great community full of great people to discuss anything from general gaming to religion and politics, and everything in between.

Thank you all so much for making my first year at BGG so great!meeple
I'm looking forward to the years to come!

I like to many games to really single out, but I chose BSG because I am also a huge fan of the show.

Other great games I've played recently:

A Game of Thrones
Fury of Dracula
Vikings
Bacchus' Banquet

I'm most looking forward to "Blade Runner: Can't afford the license Edition" (aka. Android), and I play a fair amount of RPGs and War Machine.

I play most sorts of games, but I prefer strategic and cooperative games. I am happy with my girlfriend, because she likes lite games and is usually willing to play wargames, too. My favourite 5 games in the moment are:
Hold the Line
BattleLore
Powergrid
Formula D
Ghost Stories

I´m looking forward to meet a lot of nice people here and to find new friends all around the world.

I played lots of Risk in high school, Settlers of Catan and Diplomacy in college, but after graduating my friends and I stumbled upon a FLGS where we were overwhelmed by the titles on the shelves. The store owner recommended us to this site to research and purchase intelligently.

I bought Ticket to Ride that first visit because he said it was his favorite game, but this site led me to the gem that is Indonesia--not the kind of game he stocks. After being sorely dissapointed with one of our purchases, we decided to use this site more frequently for research.

I have used this site to spread my wishlist to friends and family and build my collection, as well as purchase gifts intelligently. Games stumbled upon/purchased/wishlisted include:

Power Grid
Imperial
Through the Desert
Commands and Colors: Ancients
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
Age of Empires: III

and the wishlist:
Steam
Race for the Galaxy
Battlestar Galactica

All of which I am sure I never would have found but for this site. Thanks all for the help and contributions!

I registered back in February. I found the site from a link on Funagain Game's web site. I live in Southern Oregon and get most of my games there.

If it wasn't for this site I would have never gotten to know the joy that is Cronkinole and Pitch Car. I like Niagara a lot and was lucky enough to get the Diamond Joe expansion; thus the screen name. I have also recently become a Pandemic addict thanks to this site.

I think the thing I enjoy most about this site is the game pictures. It is nice to be able to see the components before you dish out any cash. The reviews are usually helpful.

I plan on becoming a supporter in a few weeks so I can get my geek badge, and decided to start logging my plays in the last couple of weeks. Hope to enjoy the site more in years to come.

I joined BGG because this year because my parents were selling the house and sending me my boardgame collection. A lot of old AH games that I didn't have anyone to play with so I needed to sell a bunch of them. I've ended up selling 18 games this year on BGG marketplace, a couple more on Amazon and Ebay, but also buying at least that many.

Here's a list of what I bought since registering as a member:
Agricola
Bohnanza
Hey! That's My Fish (off a BGG auction)
Blokus Trigon (off a BGG auction)
Marvel Heroes (off a BGG trade)
Killer Bunnies (off a BGG auction)
Hive
Through the Desert (off a BGG auction)
Lord of the Rings The Confrontation
Lord of the Rings and Sauron and Friends and Foe
Senji
Pecking Order
Go
Rumis
Settlers of Catan card game and expansion (off a BGG auction)
Lost Worlds (BGG auction)
California
Luftwaffe 2
1960: Making of a President
Nottingham (sold through a BGG auction)

All of them are essentially thanks to BGG, because I either found out the game from BGG or found the sale through BGG.

I actually had heard of BGG several years ago. Being an avid gamer I always try to keep up with what's new. For whatever reasons I can't recall now, I never did visit or use BGG. I always had 'other things' going on and just didn't get around to giving BGG a good look over. Between the years 2005 - 2007 I had slowly become good friends with the owner of a game store. He was a big fan of BGG and often recommended the site to customers looking for information on obscure games.

Having such a knowledgeable friend, and being involved in gaming myself, I didn't really have a need to look things up online. Unfortunately my friend passed away and eventually the people running his store had to shut it down. I eventually began looking up info on BGG every once in a while. But only for odd questions I couldn't get an answer for anywhere else. In late 2007 I created a profile, but it was only so I might post on the forums if needed. I actually never used the profile and a year passed before I even came back.

October of 2008. For the first time I took a real look at the site. Wow! I couldn't believe how comprehensively the industry was covered in this one site. I was drawn in. I have begun to put some work into my profile. I'm also using the features of the site to track my collection and locate the odd/rare games I've always wanted to find but never could.

Being into games for as long as I have, I am sorry to say I really haven't 'discovered' a new game on BGG which I hadn't heard of before. I have found games I've forgotten about which is very cool. The one game I wouldn't have bought if it wasn't for BGG is Caylus. Prior to reading about it here, I had looked at it and was going to take a pass.

I just want to take a moment and say, Thank You. Seriously, community sites like this are a herculean effort to manage and continually keep fresh. The Mods need to be recognized, Scott and Derk can't be thanked enough. And all the users who put forth an extra effort to help others, without making them feel less for asking for help in the first place, way to go!

I joined BGG in August of 2008, and have found everything I was looking for in Board Games. In 1997 I owned a Comic Book and Game store. We played mostly Magic in the store but my Wife and I went to a few conventions and were introduced to many more games. One I'd seen played at a Magic Qualifier (DJ's in Denver) was Settlers of Catan. We played a game and knew we had to have it our store.

At a Gama in Reno, we met the people who were running Mayfair. They had sold out of all of the 1st (American) editions of Settlers except their display box in the glass case. My wife would not be denied, she had to have it then and wouldn't wait for the 2nd editions to arrive at our store (they would have different colored pieces and rules for 8 player games). She told Mayfair they only needed the box and they didn't need the game if it was gonna be behind glass all weekend (she's a shyster). They could ship the box when they shipped our first order of second edition games.

I still have those first two editions.

I found BGG looking up forums on board game design. I've always made my own card games and board games to play with friends and really got into tweaking a couple of my designs this year. The Skull in my avatar is one of the suits from a card game of mine.

Since joining I've been introduced to amazing games Like Agricola, Dominion and Stone Age. Looking forward to Race for the Galaxy for Christmas (fingers crossed).
I chose Stone Age because it feels like the next step up from Settlers and I got the same thrill from playing it this year as I did playing Settlers in 1997.

Edit: really bad run-on sentence with redundancy.

I joined June 1st. My husband actually found the Geek. We were looking for a game and he stumbled on the site. If it weren't for BGG, we never would have become so involved in gaming and we never would have found Twilight Struggle.
The Geek is responsible for our buying over 45 games in the last 6 months. We have played so many great games and now I'm on here every day. I don't know what I'm more addicted to: the games or the Geek.

I found BGG by doing a google search when I was looking for places to play online. One of the first hits was http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/On-line_Games# which was a tremendous help. I started poking around this site and joined. Thanks to bgg, I now play on Game Table Online and BSW. Favorites include RoboRally, Cosmic Wimpout, 10 Days in Africa, Settlers of Catan, Dog, and PowerGrid, with many more to learn! As a library worker, I really enjoy how the site is set up, easily searched and easy to make additions. I've been playing games since age 3, and after attending my first Origins this year, I'm really hooked! Thanks BGG for a wonderful resource.

It was this game, or more specifically, zombie games in general, that caused me to find BGG.

Early this year I got the urge to hunt down a zombie game. So off to the nearest game store I went. When I got there I was suprised to find that not only did they have a zombie game, they actually had three. LNOE, Zombietown, and the one set in the mall. (can't recall the name, sorry) This caused me to pause, after all, if you are going to shell out for a game, you want to try and find the one that suits you best. I decided to go home and do some research.

When I googled Zombietown reviews (or something along those lines) and got the link to BGG. I found it to be awesome. Not only did you get a rundown on gameplay, you got pictures of contents, and reviews. The reviews I found to be particulary helpful (both good and bad) when it came to deciding which zombie game to run with.

So I went with Last Night On Earth, and my friends and I have since had hours of zombitastic fun. Now I regulary log in. To check out games, or just read what people have had to say. Also myself, and some of the others at my club have taken to using geekmail to keep in touch.
