Ok this is a really hard question and of course it is unrealistic, but if you could only play 5 games for the rest of your life what would they be. (Basically I want to know what are peoples top 5 games....). As far as my list goes, there are still a TON of games I want to try, and this list would probably change after I played some but as for right now this is it. And if I screwed something up please be gentle, I'm a newbie...

I really don't know how many people play this here, but if you get past all of the time it takes for painting models and the tremendous cost, it has amazing mechanics and the amount of fluff that comes with it leaves so much room for imagination.

I really enjoy playing this game, especially putting the pieces in the castle (don't ask me why). Again, the mechanics seem to really work well and I really get into the game when I play it.

I just got this game, but I am amazed at the depth of strategy that can go into it and how much one needs to look ahead to win.

I haven't played with the new version, so all I have seen is the old version and its ugly components. Yet, even with the game lacking attractiveness I still have a blast playing it.

Only five games, eh. Well, if that's the case, they wouldn't come straight from the top of any current list of mine because they would have to be games that wouldn't wear thin after the 20th or so playings; so here's what I've got for this particular list:

Tichu for the card game

Power Grid for board game choice #1

Arkham Horror for board game choice #2

ASL for my wargame pick

And then for choice #5, I guess I'd better either learn Go, or get to like Chess!

S&S is one game that I've said I would take to a desert island with me. Its as good with 2 players as it is with 3 or 4.

Also, I'd bring Carcassonne. Not the Castle, not H&G. Just the vanilla base game

Third is Agricola. The game has a massive amount of options and no 2 games are the same.

Fourth, Wabash Cannonball/Chicago Express. Either version would be fine, although Chicago Express looks much nicer.

Lastly, I'll go with Through the Desert, although I could easily substitue that with Great Wall of China. Either one would be fine with me.

This is my very obvious choice. Played close to 30 games at the moment, and have always had a blast. No two games are alike, and it really allows room for development. Certain players in our group are close to unbeatable in this one. Make a couple of unthought-of questions (revealing your intentions), and you're toast. As a plus, it's always fun as hell, win or lose (did I already say that?).

What, you have to name four more? wow

Seems if you could only play five games, you should pick one that takes many hours to play, like this one, or even better, The Campaign for North Africa or maybe Case Blue.

This game is worth playing over and over and over and over. Playing with a bunch of different people makes it a completely new game, and playing it with the same people gives it a wonderful background that can be used and built upon for each game.

This game is fantastic. It's so much cooler than I am, and I've been quite pleased to find that the people I've played with have all been mature enough to play it as a game, and not get too many of their out-of-game emotions/reactions involved.

So, that's #1. Here's the full list:

#1 Diplomacy
#2 Magic: The Gathering - I don't play it anymore, but it has long-haul playability, and I'd get back into it (from Alpha->4th edition).
#3 For Sale - The game is great, and you're playing the people more than the game. I love that in games.
#4 Bohnanza - A low-key player interaction game.
#5 Catan - It's a fantastic game, and I'll play it for the rest of my life.

Race for the Galaxy is close, but can't bump Magic out of it's space. Dune is close too, but we could just pretend to be Dune characters in a Dip game.

I'd say:

1. ASL
2. WIF

Then probably something like Backgammon, Chess and Go to round out the rest. Even those aren't in my current Top 10, I think they would give me the most replay value and intellectual stimulation.

Some games with huge variability...or playtimes. How about:

Europa Universalis
Divine Right
Republic of Rome
American Megafauna or Origins
Advanced Civilization

should do the trick. Too bad no CDG... Maybe Here I Stand could fit in...

Hmm, only 5.... I need to play tricks on this one.

1. For long games:A game with Michael (see above). That should keep me going for all the long games I'd like to play. If this trick is not allowed, I'll go for Through the Ages.
2. For fun euro, playable in a short time: Agricola. (Which I probably never would play with Michael because he hates it...) I love all the various options. No 2 plays are the same to me. And even playable solo.
3. For 2 hour Euro: Funkenschlag (Power Grid) with all the maps. No I don't get tired of it yet.
4. For 2-player abstract: Hive

Aaaaargh, 4 already, even with the cheat! Uhm. Still need something that can be played with loads of non-gamers.

5 Something light, fun and dexterity. I'll choose PitchCar.
