Hello!

Thursday night I logged my 1000 game after being on the Geek since 2005. I found the geek after a big move and a loss of all my DBM/DBA miniatures war gamers. Boardgaming was my lost calling and 3 years later I've logged 1000 games and purchases 80+ games.

I've noticed that my gaming tastes have really changed, from Goa-Caylus style heavy euros to a maximum fun-decision vs time factor and now I like to play 1-1.5 mediumish games, even though Twilight Struggle and some war games are still my favorites. I still like those games but I generally want to maximize the social, fun aspects of a club meeting and make the evening pleasant for everyone.

There's something about having a third kid, and a slightly competitive job, because I want games that are FUN and slightly competitive, I don’t think the two should be mutually exclusive.

So after 1000 games I now have my wife and her friends hosting a game group every Saturday, and my 6 year old is now playing (and winning Carcassonne). What an amazing hobby that’s truly enriched my life, my relationship with my wife, and brought me numerous new friends. Thanks to all you Geekbuddies for the loaners, and trips down to visit me (I live 30-45 minutes from my group) as I grew my collection.

What’s your 1000th game and how did you change from 1-1000?

My friend Tony got me into San Juan during lunch breaks in Denver before I moved. This is still a favorite of mine, and one of the good decision vs time ratio games my wife will still play.

This started the downward spiral!

I was hooked on this amazing, epic, ancients game from 2001-2005. I bought and painted 6-7 armies and played epic 3 hour games most Fridays and Saturdays. Alas, the playing time and lack of opponents made me switch to euro games. Thos is still one of my favorite games. Perhaps when the kids are older I'll start into it again.

This was one of my first purchases after getting into eurogames and finding the Geek. I still love it, but soem friends hgave played it 100-400 times and I tend to not wnat to play on that level.
The first player order change and some other aspect still make it one of the best games.

Ra and Red Planet
I got this for xmass this year and I'm still loving every play of this gem.

in 2006-2007 I realized that SAS wa smy favorite mechanic. Simultaneous Action Selection creates my favorite type of tension. MRP ties it into some brillant pyschological and tactical decisions to amke for an amazing 45-1 hour game that plays 3-5 really well.

Oh and of course after a year of exploring games I realized there were still a couple niches that were open and I started designing games. This is one of my favorites but it takes a lot of bits, and after a few good play tests I’ve not been able to retool it back onto the table.

There's plenty of room for good exploration games!

As if to buck my inital statements, TS is highly competitive but it creates a type fo tension that is lacking in every other game. Thsi quickly soars on my charts and I still love this game depsite not being very good at it.

After I played this a bunch I realized there was room in the market for a multiplayer, simpler euro-CDG so I did this:

This game about my home town melds CDG mechanics, area control, voting, "banking" of cards, and has been my most enjoyable game to date. I've sent some copies out but playtesters are not quite reliable as one would think. That's ok because a 3rd kid eliminated some game design time. I was surprised that it had some similarities to 1960 but in my game you can actually hold and defend your actions (for the most part).

This deserves a mention since it is really one of the best deeper euros that can span many types of gamers. The most time goes on the more our group fragments into different types of tastes. AOEIII seems to be a great bridging game. Also few other euros have demonstrated their ability to be so balanced despite seeming so lopsided. I've been convinced of losing on a couple occasions only so pull out a win. This tends to get some of the most plays for a game of this weight.

What a great title for this random search!!
After 3 years I now have my wife playing games a couple times a week and she even helps host a small group that’s really for her (I relaized). She likes party and social games but she'll play Dominion, Red Planet, For Sale, Ice FLow and numerous other deeper games. If its social or "Fun" she's in. She's shown me the fun of Time's Up, and I couldn’t be a luckier guy. As part of the deal to have the third kid I got plenty of gaming release time for the next few years! She's helped get my 1000 games logged more than anyone.

Which brings me back to the beginning, My 1000 game was a horrible game of "Cayslop" between DSaxon (Pac Man Avatar) Larry, and a new friend from my hometown Draven (Mario). Dsaxon crushed us but I had a great time playing till 1:30 AM and then driving 40 minutes home!!

It was late but we all still enjoyed this classic. It was a great way to round out the 1000 games.

What will be 1001? I get Stone Age and Wasabi today so those are strong contenders.

Many thanks to the Geek: the best website on the net!

I am becoming younger.

Or is it that my daughter is getting older?

While I play a wide assortment of games from wargames, to euros to AT my most recent months/years have seen a big shift to kids games that adults can actually enjoy and play for real.

My daughter is beyond the days of memory games, candyland and feed the kitty and now games like Giro Galoppo, Sorry Sliders, Pick-Picknic, Galloping pigs are filling in my play list.

My 1000th game was Pitch Car during a tourney at Econo-Con.

1st recorded play: Citadels, 4-24-07
1000th recorded play: Agricola, GRAB Game Day, 9-27-08

My buddy Tim Earl (cheng) introduced me to Euros & BGG in Feb 07. At the time, I was running a biweekly Munchkin night and deeply enthralled in the world. The very first Euro I played was San Juan, and I was completely blown away. I had no idea this style of game existed.

Over the past 1200 or so plays, I have gotten pretty good at figuring out what kind of games I really like. I have become a Game Connoisseur (some would say snob). I'll still play Munchkin, Monopoly or Pokemon TCG if my arm is pulled, but I'd much rather play Dominion, PitchCar Mini or Descent.
