Ever since I have met my wife she has always had the innate ability to laugh in the face of statistical probabilities.

Whether it be rolling dice, drawing from a deck of cards, or drawing from any number of piles of tile my wife will invariably roll/draw exactly what she needs exactly when she needs it.

This is the chronicling of my wife's inevitable destruction of all laws of physics no matter what game we play.

I have left public additions available because I'm sure I'm not alone in this frustration.

In many gaming groups I have visited I hear whispers against a specific player as "always being lucky" or "always getting the roll" etc.

I need someone to commiserate with.

If you doubt the truth of this statement or would think to reply with the fact that eventually the statistics will work themselves out, then I invite you one and all to come to my house and view my wife and I play a Sat. afternoons worth of these games and I would place most of my life savings on the fact that you would leave having totally abandoned all faith in the laws of statistics!

We'll start with a very straight forward card game.

My wife and I love this game and play it very frequently as a filler and will play at least 5-6 hands each time we play it.

Since buying it I can count the number of hands I have gotten 3 or more of the 10's in a hand on one of mine.

My wife will at least once per play be able to put all 5 of the 10's onto the table and score some obscene number a single hand, thus easily crushing me for the rest of the time it spends on the table.

How is this possible? I guess my wife is just a lucky person.

This is an "oldie but a goodie" for both of us. We play it many times every time we visit my parents.

Our total plays has to be in the 100's and I can again count the number of my victories on my hands.

I accept the fact that she is just better at this game than I am, but I have started keeping track and over the last 20-30 times we have played she has had more than DOUBLE the number of wilds in her "get rid of" stack than I have at least 15 times.

I insisted on being the "shuffler" with no change in result.

By this point my humor on the subject has begun to run dry.

Nothing special here.

Oh wait. What's this? In every game we've played (upwards of 30-50) my wife has at least doubled (true stats are currently being gathered) the number of times she can plant both drawn cards directly into the fields she is currently working on.

I mean really... why not. The pattern is so well established that it is barely triggers more than a sigh and groan these days.

You knew this had to come sooner or later so I'll get it out of the way now.

A typical sentence my wife will say on her turn goes something like this...

"Gee, I had to have you roll an 8 (which I did), then you Steve roll a 3 (which he did), and now I must roll an 11 to build the city that I need."

I'm not even going to say what transpired after that as every turn from that point on is just to painful to relive.

We all know that just when we can't have a 7 rolled we roll it....
It has NEVER happened to my wife. I've paid attention. Trust me!

I'm now prepared to take a genetic sample of my wife just to make sure that our son is truly 100% human.

Since her last turn all four tiles have been purchased so that she couldn't possibly have planned for what tiles would come up by her turn. No matter! She simply bought all four tiles perfectly with only one card left (so she didn't just have tons of money to do it) and placed all of them taking over majority in two colors and taking the lead in wall length in a single turn?!

If only that were a one time occurrence!

Thankfully I'm still usually better enough at this game (because we don't own it and so I get to play it more) that my overall strategy can sometimes overcome the bane of statistics that is my wife during this game.

This is why if we ever go gambling my wife will be in charge of all money during the entire trip!!

You thought this one was just a cold calculation of supply/demand and money management...

You'd lose every time to my wife. Every time.

She simply waits to be last allowing others to spend money on sure thing power plants that are available now and lets the exact power plant she needs be drawn last every time.

I sniffed this strategy out and played it back against her. If any of you are still reading then you already know how this panned out.

Low numbered, over-priced plants came up every time and that plant I really wanted never dropped into the lower row... not once... in 5 games.

I've quit. I just do my thing and we both get a good laugh every game when IT happens.

This is truly where the rubber has met the road.

We play with both the Inn's and Cathedral's and the Trader's and Builder's expansions, but that is neither here nor there because it really doesn't matter.

I used to crush my wife at this game when I was teaching it to her... but then she learned the rules and then the laws of thermodynamics fell apart.

I can build with an opening that can be finished with any number of pieces left in the bag and build her into spots where only a single piece left in the bag will allow completion, but I really should know better by now.

She regularly is behind by 50-60 points with a big city that she has finally gotten a majority in and I have built to only be completable by a single piece.

She has drawn it every time. I'm serious.... EVERY time. It's up in the 10-15 range right now. I know it's a 50-50 because the bonus tile draw can't be used because it's in the city she's trying to complete?!

I'M now quite sure that I'm taking CRAZY PILLS!!!!

So share with me what games you play with friends and family that can't seem to adhere to the laws of statistics on which they were based in order to help preserve what little gaming sanity I have left.
