The Corps of DisGEEKery is 4 guys that try our best to get together for gaming once a week. We maintain a Yahoo! Groups site to coordinate schedules and also to log our games.

Why does our game group have a name? Because it is geeky to do so.

Since our games are logged, we can look back and reflect on our gaming year. So here goes...

The Corps convened 46 times in 2008.
We played 93 games.
We played 51 titles.

I provided each member with the list of 51 titles and asked for 10 nominations for our Game of the Year.

For those 40 nominations, I determined the 11 finalists. (The only 11 titles to receive more than 1 nomination.)

From those 11 finalists, we ran a ranked pairs methodology to determine our winner. (Similar I think to how the Geekies are awarded.) With only 4 voters, It was fairly simple to do this by hand.

What follows are the results of the voting, and some insight into our little gaming group.

I think that the coolest thing about this list is that it is our personal experience, and is not limited to current year releases. Enjoy!

Feel Free to add comments and the games (new or old) that your gaming group most enjoyed in 2008.

Game of the Year = Agricola.

Shocking, right?

We played this 7 times.

Cool Corps Fact #1: Dave works with us but he lives 2 states away. He commutes into St. Louis 2 nights a week for the job. Dave never even heard of "gaming" until we invited him over. Dave probably wouldn't be able to fit game night into his schedule if his home and family were in St. Louis full time. Dave loves Agricola. I'm telling you, there are people out there who don't even know that they are gamers.

Game of the Year Runner-Up: 18Scan

I am lucky to be playing with a group that appreciates the hard core economic game as much as I do.

We only played this twice, but it left a mark.

Game of the Year 2nd Runner-Up: Wabash Cannonball

Four plays. Dave, our resident "non-gamer", has been very competitive in this.

6th place finalist: Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition

An RPG?

Cool Corps fact #2: I never would have predicted that by the end of the year we'd be playing D&D. Matt and I have some strong D&D backgrounds, but it has been a long time. Then we discovered this thread by BGG User BodhiWolff:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/334954

And it just so happened that we discovered it while we were in the midst of several sessions of Descent. Matt and I conspired to imitate the story in the thread with our group. We bought the new rulebooks and made all of the player aids. Damn, we have a little D&D campaign going. We played 4 sessions in 2008 and will continue to play sporadically in 2009.

We're still a boardgame group, but maybe once a month we'll pull out the battlemats and miniatures and play extreme tactical D&D. I'm having a great time with it.

Interstingly enough, Descent did not make the list of finalists, even though we played it 7 times.

Other Game of the Year Finalists

TurfMaster (4th)
Age of Steam (5th)
Cheeky Monkey (7th)
A Game of Thrones (first edition) (8th)
The Downfall of Pompeii (9th)
Source of the Nile (10th)
Container (11th)

Remember, these are all games that received at least 2 nominations.

I told you that we are not constrained by year of release. Source of the Nile? Are you kidding me? Only 2 plays in 2008, but they were delicious.

And Cheeky Monkey did about as well as it could of in our voting, given how light it is compared to the others. But it probably garnered more genuine laughter and cursing and fun than anything else.

And for completeness, here is everything else we played this year.

We played them but they didn't crack anybody's top 10 list. I'll admit that there are games on this list that are better games than what was nominated, but in general the games that were nominated all correspond with some extremely enjoyable evenings of gaming.

Amazonas
Amun-Re
Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge
Big City
Bobbin' Bumblebee
Buy Low Sell High
Catan Dice Game
Daytona 500
Diamant
Double or Nothing
Elasund

Exxtra
Galaxy Trucker
Harry's Grand Slam Baseball
Keythedral
Lascaux
Last Night on Earth
Liar's Dice
Lost Cities
Medina
Pickomino
Princes of Florence
Railroad Tycoon

My predictions for 2009?

I have Dominion on order, so the hype makes it a safe bet to make the list. However, Race for the Galaxy went over like a ton of bricks last year. I was the only one to nominate it so maybe Dominion won't be a good fit for the group. (Assuming I'm correct in that they are similarly mechaniced games.)

Sorry! Sliders seems a likely candidate to fill the Cheeky Monkey's role as a good time filler of choice. Early indications are very positive, but we'll see.

I don't think Agricola is moving to the back of the shelf just yet. D&D 4E will maintain a presence. A couple of us are dying to get some 18xx back on the table, whether 18Scan or something different. And I get the feeling that as long as we play Turfmaster once a year, it will always be a finalist, but unlikely to win top prize.
