As this is my first GeekList I wanted to start by creating a list of games that I have played since joining B.G.G, (a little over a year to date), virtually all of which would never have been played, by me, had it not been for the influence of B.G.G.

The list is not in strict order of games played, or purchased, as I was not keeping reliable records back then.shake so I have placed the majority by B.G.G. ranking.

A little background story:
I have met with a group of mates every Friday for a number of years to do roleplay gaming with table-top miniatures.

Numerous RP games captured our enthusiasm, for weeks at a time, but gradually they would lose their appeal and we would seek something different.

On a couple of occasions we would dig out an old boardgame, such as Escape from Colditz, or Kingmaker, and this would be an enjoyable change (but not something everyone enjoyed equally). A couple of newer games were purchased, WarCraft: The Board Game, and Treasure Island, were played on a couple of occasions with varying degrees of enthusiasm, and it became plainly obvious we needed something better.

Enter to the Arena a new game, that my friend Paul had ordered, for our Friday night session.
This game would never have been purchased had it not been for the influence of the Geek, and it changed our Friday nights from that day 'til this, as we have not done any Roleplaying since...

So, approximately 60 Friday nights later, this geeklist records all the games I've played, and the game that started it all was....

Puerto Rico was the number one game, on board game geek, when my friend purchased it for a Friday night session.

Little did we know that, from that night on, we were begining an adventure to play so many great, and varied, games, and the treasure had been in plain sight for many years, it just needed one of us to peek at the B.G.G treasure list.

I still recall the look of horror on the faces of some of the group as they tried to fathom all the rules, and how different this game looked to all boardgames any of us had experience of.

We only played this a few times, in 2008, but it could have been played every Friday for months had boardgame buying frenzy not been instigated by the immortal words in late November 2007:

"Why don't we each buy a game for the group, as Christmas gifts, then we could have several games to choose from?"

It started the unstoppable, and when my wife discovered I was going to be buying a boardgame for my Friday night group, much to my surprise, she took a big interest and suggested we also get some gamessurprise

The game that knocked Puerto Rico from it's perch was always destined to get attention from at least one of our group, and sure enough three of us purchased it and it saw a few games of action in 2008.

My wife loves this toosurprise

The biggest gripe, I hear, is that there are never enough turns to do all you want, but that is half the point

This was one of our groups 2007 Christmas gifts, and it solidified our boardgame agenda over RP.
We played several games with an incorrect rule interpretation, thinking that as soon as the first player builds the target number of cities the game ends immediately, until realising everyone gets to finish their buildblush

Still, it made for an interesting variant, and had us panicking in the later stages of the games wondering whether to make a mad dash for the finish, or patiently wait, knowing he who has the least number of cities builds first.
Anyone else made this error?

Another 2007 Christmas gift for the group saw the Castle building game Caylus on our table, but, despite many nods of approval, this saw little game play at our sessions the rest of the year.

Strangely enough, when I borrowed the game to show my wife she enjoyed it so much she wanted me to get it. Due to a problem sourcing a copy at the time, I bought Caylus Magna Carta, and a copy of Caylus several months later.

With all the articles and hype surrounding RFTG, it seemed an eternity before one of us finally purchased a copy and the anticipation to play was driving me wild.

So, what happened next?
We played it a couple of times.

Was the hype too much?

I still can't fathom out why our group never wants to play this?
Perhaps I can borrow it and my wife will fall in love with it?shake

Nope, that didn't work so guessing I won't get to play this I have held off buying my own copy.

WOW... A battle tower... what a novel idea.
This game, which we bought shortly after Puerto Rico, had an instant appeal to our group.
We played a couple of 3 player games, then it sat on the shelf for a few months, until a fateful night that saw our group with 5 players and the call for Shogun to be played.

Cracking open Shogun with 5 players seemed a great idea, but six and a half hours later the ordeal was finally over, and it went back on the shelf with a mental note engraved in all our minds...
"NOT FOR 5 PLAYERS!"

The shiver runs through all our spines if Shogun is mentioned with five of us present at a Friday meetgulp

This was not the first co-operative game we played as a group as we played Arkham Horror long before trying this beauty, but co-operation and Arkham don't seem to go together in our groupshake

Played about three times and because the owner does not attend our group with any frequency it has yet to return to our groups table. I recall us all saying this is a great game and we must get a copy to keep at our group venue, but to date this has not happened.

After showing my wife the geek, she took some time to scroll through the top 250 games, looking for games that appealed to her, for us to play, and settled on Railroad Tycoon.

Whilst opinion may be divided on which is the best Railroad game, this has never once failed to entertain all who have played it with me.

Our game group, one of whom is a Train driver, always give this the thumbs up when it hits the table.

When this was bought by my mate and given to me to playtest prior to our Friday session I remember thinking will it be as good as Agricola, or too similar?
I fell in love with it, but my wife didn't like it as much, so how can a guy ever really know what games a woman will like?soblue

The guys like it though, and some prefer it to Agricola, so does this mean Agricola will sit out the next few months?

I predict this to take number one spot during 2009...

A game of this heritage has to be good, so we all sit down to play this and after much anticipation....

These dice are loaded...

Should they be loaded?

Does it mention this in the rules?

Mixed reaction follows, and much rolling of dice, until half of us want to continue with the dice and the half want to change them... This game bites the dust and has remained shelved ever since.

This game is an example of how the geek influences things.

With over a year of geek membership and several dozen different games tried, not a single WW2 game is in the possession of our group, and we used to do WW2 miniature gaming!

I get a friend interested in trying Arkham Horror out, even though he is not a boardgamer, and he likes it enough to try some other games from my collection. He plays Railroad Tycoon, and then Agricola, and so far he is impressed with all the games.
I tell him about B.G.G. and before I can blink he has gone and bought Memoir '44 and a couple of expansions.
I decide it won't hurt to buy another copy to enable us to do the overlord scenario's, especially as my 6 year old son is now an avid boardgamer too, having recently learnt how to play Ticket to Ride.

I really like the original board, but the small cards and the thought of paying extra to buy the 1910 expansion have stopped me buying this one, but as we have it in our group it still gets played fairly regularly.

I played this over 100 times on-line, during 2008, so I guess I like it

Lovecraftian adventure surely can't be any better than this?

Well, perhaps, but I love the theme, and the design, even if the rules could be a little clearer.

You will either fully immerse yourself for a great experience, or trudge through it like an ant in sticky treacle.goo

My Arkham Horror layout image (showing) submitted to the geek, was in the top 100 images of 2008, and an unexpected pleasure.
I'm just pleased that all those that thumbed it felt it was worth looking at.

Not sure how this works when using the Ticket to Ride Dice expansion as 5 dice, and three cards in hand, would never be enough for the 9 link route between Murmansk and Lieksa?

I also hoped my wife could be persuaded to play this on occasion as we like watching horror movies together.

Well, despite being purchased around Christmas 2007, this has been played once against my wife, and once with the boys on a Friday.
My wife wasn't thrilled with the game and although the group liked it, evidently it was not enough to encourage second helpings.

Friday nights will often allow us several hours of game time, so we can play a couple of medium length games and a filler or two if we are lucky, so this was bought as a contender as a filler.

It saw a handful of plays with the group during 2008 and it has never had a negative reaction. My wife quite enjoys it too, and I really like the whole look of the game.

I bought this game in December 2008, after my wife decided she wanted a new game for us to try.
The aesthetic appeal of the board made up her mind, and although I initially thought it might be too similar to other games we own, I have to say, this became an instant hit for me.

Too early to say whether this will get multiple play time in the coming months at the Friday night sessions, but I am hoping it will.

One of the first games I got solely to play with my wife, and she fell in love with it straight away.
It is very simplistic, and effectively a 5 suit rummy card game with scoring, on pretty cards, but hey... she will play it, and that encourages talk of playing other games.
