Well that's a good game, but I can do better!

I have from time to time, found a few games where I've felt that the designer seems to have looked at another game, and decided to do something similar, but different (and better? Judge yourself).

This is not about games which have gotten remakes by the same designer, or belongs to the same series of games, but games which has been made completely independent of each other but feels like they have a similar starting point.

I'll start off with 2 (obvious) examples. Please add more:

Derived from Ticket to Ride

Yes, I know, a lot of people will scream "They are not similar", but that's not the point. I agree that there is a lot of things that differ, but at the same time, you ar building routes on a board, which at least gives me the feeling that the author had looked at Ticket to Ride and thought, 'I can do that better'. Did he succeed? Many seems to think so, but I prefer Ticket to Ride any day.

Derived from Carcassonne

The games share one central idea, to build a landscape/castle by connecting tiles obeying certain rules. Again, it feels like the author here had looked at Carcassonne and decided that he could do better. Did he succeed? Well, maybe. Out of the box, certainly, but with an expansion or two (or Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers) I'll still say that Carcassonne is just as good.

They took a boring and uninteresting game called Shadows over Camelot. Using the elements with potential from the original game, adding balance, theme, and choices for the players, we got this excelent game.

I immediately thought Ticket to Ride (maybe more Europe) when I saw the box bottom. But with money.

I knew nothing about it when I looked it over in the store. Came home to check BGG and drove back the next day to buy it ...

... (sigh) with money.
