A great day for a board game group--new members arrive. We were blessed with three new members on this Board Game Night. Brian and Shawn talked their co-worker Pat into giving Game Night a try. In addition Luke and Bonnie joined us as well. Three new folks plus Mike, Bill, Eric, Rick, Mark, Travis, Amy, Kathy, Mandi, Brian & Derek gave us the robust total of 14 games. Another great turnout. We've been playing longer games for the last several weeks. Tonight a couple of the games were a little bit shorter and we played five total games. I hope the newcomers enjoyed themselves and we'll see them back soon.

We meet Thursday evenings every week to play games of assorted lengths and complexities. If you are in the greater La Crosse area you are welcome to join us!

Information and a schedule of game nights is available at www.boardgames.meetup.com/495.

We also have a guild on BGG. It is here: /www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/433

To the games!

This game was suggeted online before we got together. Travis vowed that he was going to smile while playing this usually tense game. Travis was joined by Mark and Amy. Newcomers Luke and Bonnie played as well and quickly let it be known that while they were newcomers to La Crosse Board Game Night they were anything but new to the game gig. Bonnie finished first and Luke second. What's more, there was significant space between their scores and that of third place finisher Mark.

Score
Mark 73
Travis 68
Amy 61
Luke 80
Bonnie 84

Another game discussed online prior to getting together. This game has now been removed from my "played once and MUST be played again" list. I don't have a played twice and must be played again list it would have moved to that list. Mike, Eric and Bill were all playing for the first time. You certainly wouldn't have known that I was the "veteran" player. I played this a LONG time ago and that much was obvious from my total inability to add anything to Mike's reading of the rules and explanation. Eric started slow but finished pretty well, Bill hung in there throughout. Mike figured out what we were doing and schooled the rest of us. My score was pretty pathetic for the only one who had played before.

Score
Mike 31 22
Bill 22 31
Eric 20
Rick 13

Sorry Bill--I guess I was just traumatized by my low, low score.

Kathy, Mandi, Brian, and Pat were all set to settle in for a nice game of Stone Age when Derek showed up. Now they needed a game for five. Several options were discussed but that Board Game Night favorite was the game of choice. Pat and Kathy were new to the game. Mandi, Brian, and Derek ought to be getting the hang of it. Apparently Derek was on his best behavior and no one was identified as the player who must be stopped. This strategy worked, he finished well ahead of the rest. The rest of the players were more bunched together with Brian edging newcomer Pat and Mandi and Kathy at the tail in. Mandi made sure to move to the tie breaker so she could eke out a fourth place finish. I believe I heard that this was Kathy's first last place finish at Board Game Night. That is impressive in its own right.

Score
Kathy 53
Mandi 53
Brian 74
Pat 68
Derek 109

The In the Year of the Dragon and Saint Petersburg games ended at nearly the same time. There was a minor shuffling of players as Mark and Eric changed tables. Mark suggested Antike. We chose to play the older board. For a little while, it looked like we might not finish before closing time but then Mike started expanding his empire. He made short work of the nine victory conditions and emerged a conclusive victor. No military action was used in this game and no temples were destroyed. Mike was able to claim nine victory conditions using neither and no one else did either.

Score
Mark 6
Bill 3
Rick 6
Mike 9 victory conditions=win

p.s. Everyone who played this game has a one syllable name--significant, probably not...

Luke, Travis, Bonnie, and Amy sought out something lighter to follow In the Year of the Dragon. Eric joined them. Good old Ticket to Ride filled the bill. Maybe Eric was a little less fried from Saint Petersburg than the others were from ITHYOTD or maybe he is just really good at Ticket to Ride. Frankly, I'll take the first explanation but who knows. At any rate Eric finished first handily in this game. The others were all some distance back.

Score
Eric 117
Luke 88
Travis 92
Bonnie 66
Amy 60
