I am a fan of games where each player has unique powers or can take on various roles with unique abilities. (For example, Puerto Rico.) This list focuses on games in which each player secretly chooses (or is assigned) a role with special powers.

I think strictly the roles aren't secret, but many people play where at least one role is kept secret until needed. This was a very influential game in the whole "breaking the rules" genre.

AKA Die Erben Von Hoax. I haven't played this, but this is the earliest game I know of this type. Each player has a secret role which confers a special ability. Players may use others' abilities by bluffing but risk elimination if someone guesses who they are.

In this traditional party game, two of the players are werewolves and the rest are villagers. Will the villagers discover the werewolves before they are all dead, or will they lynch an innocent villager?

The first (to my knowledge) game where, in each round, there is a new hidden role selection. Two factions are fighting but no one knows who may have switched sides.

A sequel of sorts to Verrater, with similar role selection. In this case the players are on a merchant ship. The captain is known, but the other players may be supporting the captain or the mutineer.

Bruno Faidutti borrowed the hidden character mechanism from the previous two games. Now the assassin and thief can choose characters to target, but they must guess who is likely to be which character, or may miss the player they intended to attack.

(Disclaimer: I haven't played this yet.) This game has two layers of roles: a known character (e.g. Lucky Duke or El Gringo), and an unknown (but for the sherrif) job (sheriff, outlaw, renegade or deputy). Each job has a different goal regarding who should be eliminated in the gunfight. The special abilities come from your (known) character rather than your job so I guess this isn't strictly a "secret abilities" game but a "secret goals, public special abilities" game.

Another game (like Hoax) where you can claim to have one of the roles and other players can challenge you.
