Hi all! My first GeekList so please be gentle. :-)

Lets see what peoples favourite coffee shop games are. (I'm looking for them and need your input!)

So what IS a coffee shop game?
Well, here is a list of their typical traits:
1. They are small so they can be carried around without any problems.
2. They can be played by 2,3,4 or 5 people.
3. They don't take too much space, i.e. a coffee shop table.
4. Preferable not too difficult to teach random people you run into at the coffee shop.

So please, just run wild with your suggestions!

One of those games that my friends don't have to be talked into playing, but they actually ASK ME to play it. Takes 30 seconds to explain, and it is (should be) fast paced and creates a lot of "damn you for ruining my plans!" moments. It takes up almost no space in a bag. Takes up some playing surface, but not too bad. Pure gold, and a bargain thanks to CHeap Ass games' prices. Must have!

This bidding game has suddenly almost surpassed The Very Clever Pipe Game. My friends are begging for it, and we have tons of fun with it. Surprisingly, games get very wild after a while as people start ruining each others bids out of spite, and it has created a new term, a "big cheese moment" when you force someone to re-roll one of their most successfull dice. Good for 3-4 players. Takes up very little space, but will require you to get some dice, preferable a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and D20. Again, a bargain as it's cheap ass.

I'm trying to think of some games we enjoy that might appeal to the coffee shop crowd. This one is not exactly small, but will fit on a coffee table. A simple maze/race game that can be played by 2-4. Again, very sturdy components made of wood. Looks nice, too - might draw some attention.

More cards. As an admitted Magic fanatic I normally carry at least 2 decks with me at all times (hey - I play other things as well ). I've played this in coffee shops and pubs before now, you just need a small table and something to score with/on (a pen and a beer mat/napkin work well).

Very portable, and there's lots of games that you can play with the pieces. Looney Labs even sells a chessboard bandana that you can use with several of the games. It's also got a great 'coffee shop look' to it, and will probably attract the attention of some of the other patrons.

Though it might take a travel set, or at least one without bowls, the reason this is a good coffee shop game is because it's so cool to see people play. Enigmatic enough so that the dainty sluts with their laptops will look up instead of looking down at the screen in a mix of psuedo-disgust and insecurity when you check them out. We all go to coffee shops to look cool right? If you just wanted to mess around on the computer, why not stay home without all the distractions?

This might be a little bias since I created Alpha Playing Cards, but what the heck. Since I live near Seattle it's only natural I spend a lot of time in coffee shops and I always have a deck of Alpha with me. I think Alpha is the perfect coffee house game for several reasons. First, they are the size of a standard deck of cards so they easily fit in my pocket. Second, there are several games I can play with a single deck. If I am waiting for someone or if I am just by myself I can always play one of the solitaire games. And when someone shows up or if someone shows interest in the deck I can always play one of the other 2-player or mutliplayer games. Anyways, if you happen to be in a coffee shop in the Seattle area and you see my playing a game of Alpha; stop and say "hello"; if your lucky I might show the cool card trick I made for Alpha and/or give the deck when I am done. "Oh yea", I am always willing to play a game too. My other coffee house pick would be the piecepack. I'll add that to the list later; if already hasn't been; in which case I'll just add a comment.

The piecepack is a great coffee house game for several reasons. First, it is compact and easy to carry: the current version from Mesomorph games comes in a plastic VCR cassette box. Second, it is a game system with over 100 different games that you can play. The games range from solitaire games (you can play when you are alone or waiting for someone) to multiplayer games (you can play when your friend(s) finally arrive; late of course). There are abstract strategy games, german style board games, flicking games, roll and move games, etc, etc, etc. There are a lot of different games and I am sure you will find something to fit your taste. Also, many of the games can be played within the confines of a standard coffee table.
That is why I always have a piecepack with me when I go out to relax at a local coffee house. And, of course, my deck of Alpha Playing Cards.

Typo is played with a deck of slightly-oversized cards that comes in it's own sturdy plastic case -- so definitely portable and I keep my deck with me just in case I can strike up a game. Great for 2 or more, and plays quick, and fits on a coffee shop table. In fact, I played my last game at a coffee shop... Also fun solitaire for those moments when you're waiting for your friends to arrive.
