Are you the, “It’s your turn” Guy?

Do you find it difficult to establish a coherent strategy during a game because you are always the one moving the game along?

Do you wish that occasionally you could be the “daydream” person, or the “worry about the children and everything else” person, or the “gossip about meaningless drivel” person, and have someone ELSE remind YOU that, “it’s your turn” EVERY time around the board?

I DO!!!

However, if I ever decide not to be the “It’s your turn” Guy, then I am afraid one of two things will happen:

1. After sitting motionless for several minutes, some spark of awareness would eventually seep into the mind of the active player, reminding that person that he or she is in the middle of a game. That player would, of course, be clueless as to whose turn it is or what is going on. That player would ask me, “Whose turn is it and what’s going on?” Then I would be right back to where I started, minus a few precious angstroms of enamel from grinding my teeth, waiting for the player to move.

2. The spark of awareness never does happen. The players would all sit idle for hours and eventually die and their bones would dehydrate. In years to come, some archeologist would find a half played game on the table with little piles of dust on the chairs.

Feel free to add to this list…

Games with no obvious end to the turn

O.K. Johnny just advanced down a row on the taxes column. Will he use his free ship tile this turn? What about an expedition card? Hmmm, he is just sitting there. It looks like he is probably done. Is he going to acknowledge that his turn is over so Suzy can go? Suzy sure does not look like she is paying attention, no help there. Hmmm, maybe I should step in and ask, “Are you done?” like I have the last 9 freaking turns in a row!

Games with game flow design issues.

This game is not brain busting, so why do I come out of it so mentally exhausted?

In this game, the players must resolve actions island by island. This does not happen impulsively. Players do not simultaneously advance to the next island. Someone has to take the lead and advance the play through each island, one by one. This, of course, falls on the shoulders of the “It’s your turn” person. This gets maddening the umpteenth time around, and the “It’s your turn” person can never think about his turn because of all the work put into coordinating the game flow.

This one is particularly bad because the problem exists even when not playing with notorious “daydream” people.

Games where play advances in a non-clockwise order.

Johnny just moved his Dinos. Suzy has the next longest tail. Does she realize it is her turn? Is she contemplating her next move? Should I be patient and wait? How is it that I always know when it is her turn, but she never does? Is it that hard? A polite “I am done” from Johnny would have been helpful. I don’t want to be rude, but how long can I stand this? Maybe if I just… “HEY, IT’S YOUR TURN!!!”

Everyone at the table jumps, Suzy starts to cry, and for some reason, I am the bad guy.

I feel your pain. Very rarely am I NOT the "It's your turn" guy. Certain games are more prone than others. I think it has to do with the amount of down time and the tendency of nongamers to be playing.

I've had some bad experiences - and to pick the worst one it was a toss up between this and Formula De. But I've never had this one happen before or since... I was at a party - and everybody wanted to play a game so they brought out Cranium. We had four teams of four and things were going fine... But when I'm at someone else's house I purposely don't run other people's games since some people resent it. So I just minded my own part of the game. Soon enough everybody just started talking to each other - and leaving the room for "just a second"... - no one paid attention as to who's turn it was or who was supposed to read the card... people started getting up and leaving... and the game...just...dissolved... I wasn't too upset because I wasn't in much of a Cranium mood, but it just bugs me when people see a game, say "Can I play?" and then leave or don't even pay attention... I suppose there always has to be a turn sergeant - I just wish it wasn't me.

I had a bad experience of being the "it's your turn" guy in a game of Citadels with 8 players. I'm the one in my gaming group who buys and teaches games, so naturally I become the "chairman" in this game of Citadels where I'd be saying like "OK, next up is the Wizard, who's the wizard? Is anyone the wizard? No one? OK, next up is the King. Who's the king? etc etc" ... and when we got to the Architect, someone would say, "Wait, I'm the Wizard, I missed my turn." Grrrr...

I need to discipline my gaming group to be more focused...

I am, without a doubt, the "It's your move, Go!" guy. Everyone's used to it, though, so no one gets upset.

When I read the rules for MotA, and read the "penance" rules, I chuckled. "Finally," I mused, "everyone who refuses to pay attention will spend their turns in penance!" I explain at the beginning of the game that the person in charge of the bell has to move the bell up each turn, or else spend a turn in penance.

So what happens? Fortuna, that wench, had me distracted with one of my countless other duties as the "It's your turn guy" - you know, answering questions, making sure people play their cards correctly, telling someone they're asking the wrong sort of question, etc. - and who should forget to move the bell but the "It's your turn guy", me.

I spent a turn in the chapel lamenting God's divine plan.

This isn't exactly the same situation as what you're describing, but the first time I played Emerald, the player to my left kept opting to pay gold whenever the dragon caught him, instead of having his knights imprisoned. This kept throwing me off, because I kept thinking he was finishing his turn, and I kept trying to take mine as soon as he paid the gold, REGARDLESS of who had gone last! It became a running joke, and I kept having to ask, "Is it my turn now?", just to be sure.

I am the It's Your Turn guy pretty much all the time. I'm also the Buy-the-new-games guy and the explain-the-rules-guy. I don't mind my duties, if not for some people get annoyed when i remind them we ARE playing a game and it IS their turn.

Sometimes, I wish i could let someone else be the Turn Nazi.

In Power Grid, I've adopted a very good way to move things along. It's called "Or Don't." "Bid or don't, michael." "Build Or Don't, Eric." "Buy or Don't, Luke."

I don't mind my role, really. Makes me feel important.

This game suffers from there being different types of turns. Some times it's your turn to take the action based on what has been selected, other times you have to choose an action. This can complicate matters for the "it's your turn" guy if he isn't careful about how he words his gentle reminder.

IYTG: Suzy, it's your turn
Suzy: OK, I take the prospector
IYTG: No Suzy, it's your turn to build something

...

IYTG: Suzy, would you like to build something?
Suzy: Huh, why do I get to build something now?
IYTG: Because mike chose the builder

And so forth and so on. Yes, I realize this can be easily solved with a good it's your turn guy, but with some people, this game is almost impossible to play without one.

Just wanted to share a couple of friendly ways that we remind players (usually my mom) that it is their turn.

The first is less used, but I think it is very clever. However I can take no credit for it. I heard someone else mention it on BGG and have adopted it. Just a simple "Hey, Godot!" works wonders. "C'mon Godot, we're waiting!" laugh

And this one I actually did come up with, though I am sure I am not the only one. We like to imitate throwing a little yellow flag and pretend to blow a whistle, "Tweeet! Delay of game!"

There's a specific card in the Monty Python Card Game which allows the IYTG to shout 'Get on with it!' at the defaulting player, and then take their turn!

It's a card I wish I had kept hold of when I dumped the rest of the cards in a purge.

A must for all IYTGs everywhere.
