Last night, I had a game night with my friend’s children (they’re also my friends). I don’t have children with whom to game, so I have to borrow some periodically. Hence Alyssa-12, Emma-10, and Trey-8. It’s Friday night, so why not play a few games?

These kids have grown up playing the typical American games, but we played Carcassonne and For Sale over the summer when they were over for the day, so they have at least a little gaming experience.

We began with Felix. I let each of them choose a game for Round 1, so Emma chose this one, probably because of the cats. They kept exclaiming over the cards-- whether or not the cats were cute, which were their favorites.

Trey passed each round-- he never ended up with any cards-- but he came in second, so hoarding can work. Alyssa kept getting stuck with negative cards or very few points.

Here they are playing For Sale. (I was going to take picture with each game, but, umm... we were playing games!)

We’d played this game in the summer when they were over, and Alyssa wanted to play it again. Trey won this game-- he got some great checks. I’m never sure if Trey understands the rules because he’s a quiet guy, just sits there and listens, but he did just fine with this game. They’ve picked up on this quickly.

Trey’s choice--as soon as he walked in and saw the stack of games, he said "I want to play the game with the castles! What’s it called?" Alyssa remembered the name, and she did very well, coming in just behind me at the end, but I thought she might win because she had more castles on her pasture than I.

Alyssa completely understands the game (she was building all of her castles on her pasture, and we shared a few castles), Emma paid a little attention, but we had to remind her of her turn because her mind was elsewhere. Trey soldiered along, just having fun, but did better than Emma. He had a pasture with one castle on it at the end. Oh, I should add that this was their first game with pastures...last time we played without.

Trey said "I love this game! It’s the best game in the whole world!" Nothing like a little enthusiasm.

Slamwich is a favorite with the kids (their friends own it), so they got to play a game while I was putting together the ingredients for popcorn balls.

I explained the rules to this, and Emma was like "this is too complicated. Let’s play something else." It was Trey’s choice for Round 2, and I didn’t want to disappoint him, so suggested playing an easier version-- that I made up on the spot. We dispensed with the tickets and just took cards and laid track for points. Emma mostly laid 2-track routes, while Alyssa and Trey saved up for the 6 and 7 track routes.

Wasn’t any fun for me, but they seemed to have a good time...Trey had fun collecting those blue trains! (his favorite color). I didn’t want to scare them away from games they aren’t familiar with, so decided to tone it down.

Emma and Alyssa, both horse lovers, collaborated on their choice for Round 2. Even Trey likes this one, though. There’s some game here, although the favorite part here is collecting the horses and deciding which are favorites.

It’s past 10pm at this point, so I suggest one last game. "It’s easy...you don’t have to think." Trey had pulled this out at his grandma’s but didn’t know how to play it, so now he knows! We played two games, one with the red board and one with blue. Emma won one game and-- I forget who won the other. The great thing about dexterity games is that folks who wouldn't win other games can win them.
