This list is one of a series of list created to appease my organizationally-oriented mind. This particular one will incorporate more of my opinions on the individual games and include CDG's I do not own.

The one aspect of CDG's that makes the development of this game mechanic so revolutionary is the ability for wargames to now incorporate a more holistic view of the social and economic pressures and events that helped to shape the conflict portrayed by the game. If a game is to function as a tool to teach history, then it cannot do so by simply insuring that a given military unit is present, that its capabilities are comparatively rational, and that it is available to a player in a historically realistic manner.

That type of history is not the kind of critical exploration and analysis of historical events that characterizes modern history (even at the high school level). CDG's are capable of providing a broader contextual sweep of human conflict. Though they (wargames, including CDG's) may not actually "teach," CDG's do a much better job of exposing gamers to the complexities that underlie conflict. In doing so, I hope that gamers will be motivated to further explore the non-militaristic events incorporated in the cards.

Designer: Mark Herman
Publisher: Avalon Hill
Period: American Revolution

Mark Herman's revolutionary We The People began the entire CDG genre, and so it begins this list. I was fortunate enough to trade for it, though I have not played it yet. It is the only original Avalon Hill CDG title that I own.

The second CDG created and also released (originally) by Avalon Hill. This game adds greater depth of strategic choice by combining Operations and Events on to the same card (something We The People had kept separate).

The third CDG ever released (and also originally done by Avalon Hill), it is the first of the multiplayer CDG's. It's complexity is on par with Hannibal, but forgoes the use of battle cards to resolve combat.

I have a certain, inexplicable desire to own one CDG from each publisher out there that makes them. MMP has produced only one CDG so far -

Though I have heard many good things about it, and though North Africa is my favoritist front in WWII, I have too many WWII games as it is. So, I am unlikely to purchase it.

More likely to enter my collection as my first MMP CDG is -

I like exploring the Crusade period and look forward to seeing what the CDG mechanic can do for this milieu.

The company that has produced by far the most CDG's and has even developed something of a certification mark to identify this mechanic in its games. There no new CDG's in the pipeline from this company (Washington's War being a rehash of We the People). Of their remaining CDG's, these are my comments:

Own it and GMT classifies this as a CDG, but its tactical scope makes me feel it does not belong on this list. I do not plan on purchasing any other CC game (save for any Pacific expansions).

I will pass on Herman's WWII offerings because I am filled to the brim with games for that war.

McLaughlin's and Racier's sequels are tempting, but I already own 2 CDG's from each of these designers. Is a third really necessary?

I am very much looking forward to Volko's second CDG:
