When you get to play a new game you never really expect it, but sometimes it's there or somewhere else.

Feel free to add your own items and comments, but please include a form of the word "expect" to any items and please don't utter those two deadly words...

Don't read or watch if very easily offended...

Card #219. I might have expected it, but I just really didn't. Unfortunately, the card has nothing to do with Spain. Wow, I didn't expect that.

Edit: Actually there is a card in the multi-player version.

I guess I missed that one.

"Part I" features a dance number with a Mel Brooks' Torquemada and Jackie Mason. Well, I wasn't expecting that...

(Marlon Brando portrayed Torquemada in the 1992 film Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, a movie which received nominations for worst picture, worst actor, two worst supporting actors, worst new star, worst screenplay, and worst director. I guess Tom Selleck shouldn't have worn the Hawaiian shirt when portraying King Ferdinand.)

Torquemada was a Dominican.

Do Dominicans even wear red or purple?

The Dominicans have been referred to as Blackfriars due to the black cloaks that they wear over their white habits. The Augustinians wear similar garb while the Carmelites have been known as Whitefriars and the Franciscans have been known as Greyfriars for the color of their clothing.

Well, I didn't really expect or not expect that...

In Mystery of the Abbey it's the Templars who are the ones who wear red while the Franciscans wear brown and the Benedictines wear black.

Sephardic Jews are apparently a subgroup of Jews from the Iberian Peninsula.

How do you get Sephardic out of Iberian? Apparently, Sepharad is a Biblical name of uncertain location perhaps being Sardes in Asia Minor. However, after the 2nd century the name somehow became associated the Iberian Peninsula. It seems that Sepharad is also the modern Hebrew name for Spain.

France seems to have the second-largest population of Sephardic Jews, second only to Israel and more than four times that of the United States which has the third-largest population.

Hmm, I didn't expect that.

Apparently some famous people with Sephardic Jewish ancestry include Hank Azaria, Shiri Appleby, Judah P. Benjamin, Neve Campbell, Benjamin Disraeli, Bob Dylan, Peter Sellers, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Matt Stone.

Tomas de Torquemada makes an appearance in this game too.

There are some other personalities in the game from Torquemada's era included in this game:

Margaret of Anjou, the power and nominal military leader behind Henry VI of England.

Cesare Borgia, the illegitimate son and suspected "hit man" of Pope Alexander VI who was eventually deported to Spain.

His sister Lucrezia Borgia, the third child of Pope Alexander VI, who was suspected of poisoning. Her name has been mentioned in several television shows. In Blackadder, the main character states that if Baldrick were to serve up certain meals in Staff Headquarters that they'd be arrested for the greatest mass poisoning since Lucrezia Borgia invited 500 of her close friends round for a wine and anthrax party. In M*A*S*H, Major Winchester states that gourmet cooking in the army would be better served by Lucrezia than the army cook. In Bewitched, Samantha says that her cousin Serena makes Lucrezia Borgia look like Shirley Temple. In Cheers, Dr. Frasier Crane also mentions her by name.

Well, I didn't expect the televsion shows Blackadder and Bewitched to be linked together by an obscure personality from 500 years ago.

Rotterdam was the birthplace of Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, a Dutch Renaissance humanist and Christian theologian.

It was among the conversos, converted Jews, that Erasmianism, a more intellectual form of Christianity, had its greatest successes in Spain.

Apparently marrano is the name for a new Christian or hidden Jew of Jewish origin while morisco is the name for a new Christian or hidden Muslim of Moorish origin.

In the game Here I Stand the card "Erasmus" is used for Reformation attempts until turn 2 and for Counter Reformation attempts after turn 2. Erasmus' work Education of a Christian Prince was written to Here I Stand leader Charles V.

On April Fool's Day, the city of Rotterdam celebrates the release of his best-known book The Praise of Folly. Well, I wasn't expecting that...

Anyway, it has been argued that the War of the Reconquest of Spain is the longest war in the history of the world. Well, I didn't expect that...

By the time of El Cid (c. 1040-1099), the Christians had retaken about half of the Iberian Peninsula. By the 1200s, they had retaken about 85 percent of the peninsula.

In the later stages of this war when the Christians retook southern and central areas of the peninsula, it became very advantageous for citizens to claim to be a Christian. Also the Ottoman Empire was on the rise when in the year 1453 they took control of the great city of Constantinople which had often been the largest city in the world. It is argued that these two factors greatly contributed to the situation.

1492 was an important year especially for Spain.

You wouldn't expect so many things to happen this year...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1492

On January 2, the last Moorish King of Granada, surrenders his city to the army of Ferdinand and Isabella, ending the 10-year Granada War and the almost 800-year Reconquista.

On March 31, Ferdinand and Isabella sign the Alhambra decree, expelling all Jews from Spain unless they convert to Roman Catholicism.

On July 31, the Jews are expelled from Spain; 150,000 flee.

On August 3, Christopher Columbus leaves for his first journey across the Atlantic.

On August 11, Pope Alexander VI succeeds Pope Innocent VIII as the 214th pope.

Sultan Bayezid II dispatches the Ottoman Navy to bring the Jews safely to Ottoman lands. (The first Gutenberg press in Istanbul was established by the Sephardic Jews in 1493.)

On October 12, Columbus' expedition makes landfall in the Caribbean.

On December 31, about 100,000 Jews are expelled from Sicily.
