Having tried and played more than 100 games, I can usually tell if I will like a game early on. However, there are a number that required several plays before I was sure I liked them.

The first game was a nightmare. Played it 3P, and it seemed like an exercise in maintenance. Having spent $70 for it, and having seen its high ranking, I played it a second time. With much of the mechanics now clear, this game began to shine. With 5 games under my belt, I can't wait for my next play.

This game took a couple of times before the mechanics became clear. I've never looked back and love it more with each play. The only true 10 in my collection.

My first few games with the expansion had me enjoying it less than the original games. This is mostly due to the interim goals. Over time, it became clear that we just needed to learn how to value them better against other opportunities. At this point, I am liking RTFG even more than I did pre-expansion.

Talk about a game that cannot be played well your first time - so many different mechanics with unclear interaction, and many unknowns like building types and native resistance. After a couple of games, strategies emerge and this becomes a very good game.

If you spend all of your money on a big chain early, you are not going to like this game. Most will avoid this mistake their second time, and the game becomes far more fun.

Currently my groups favorite game (although I suspect it lacks the staying power of RFTG), this can be a bit of a bear the first several hours of the first game. Then you have the aha moment and most will love this game. The first game takes far longer than subsequent plays, so give it a second shot.

I do think it's a very usual story with Reiner Knizia games; they are almost always better at second time. That's the reason I created this series of polls about Knizia's games - first and later impressions.
What I'd list here without doubt is
- Great Wall of China
- Keltis
- Medici vs Strozzi
And looking at those polls it seems quite many of those games (Municipium, Strozzi, Cheeky Monkey, Genesis) also fits this list.

In case you are newly introduced to this game it is easy to lose badly, and know it after 15 minutes into the game. But if you give it another try you start to realise it's not about luck, it's about knowing how to play it well.

I really wanted to enjoy it, but it was simply too easy to win. No challenge = no fun. That, and I was put off by the repetitiveness of the constant dice rolls.

Then I house-ruled it to up the challenge. Then I added expansions, which brought in some cool new facets and made the game truly challenging. Then I discovered the Strange Eons creator.

Now this is a favourite of mine. It just needed some tinkering, and some acceptance on my part that the constant dice rolling is what it is.
