Despite the concern related to the conflict with Valentine's Day, the weekend of MittenCon3 brought in record numbers of participants. My thanks to Scott and Mike for their assistance and to FRED and FairPlay Games for their support of our annual event. I've now garnered several new friends and, after three years, can even recognize them despite the fact that I only see some of them once a year (at MittenCon). I'll do some survey follow-up to get some feedback and suggestions as to how we can continue to improve and grow this family-style event. The weekend was about gaming, though, so here are the games that were played. If you attended, please add the games that you played.

I also would like to announce that the winner of the inaugural John Daniels Excellence in Gaming Award, as voted by the founders of MittenCon and based upon nominations submitted throughout the weekend, is Mr. Jim Matt (sawtoothbarbie here on BGG, although his sparse profile does not even come close to representing his gaming nature). This award honors the gaming enthusiasm, etiquette, and comradeship as epitomized by one of our area's leading gamers, Mr. John Daniels redneon here on BGG, who is currently fighting a painful bout of cancer. We sincerely missed John at MittenCon this year and will continue our prayers for him. Congratulations to Jim!

I also know that Scott has posted another Geeklist (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/39756) highlighting his MittenCon3 gaming experiences.

With the arrivals coming in, I have to start my weekend with something light enough that can withstand an occasional interruption. This game received several subsequent plays not only by me, but several others that I observed throughout the event

Another game light enough to withstand registration interruptions. This, too, I saw being played throughout the weekends. Based upon the various card sleeves I saw utilized, I'll stick with my choice of the Ultra-Pro Metallicized sleeves- durable enough to handle the excessive shuffling. Plenty of new players were introduced to this game during the event.

Another good introductory game to lead the way to the heavier stuff. I like this game for its instructional simplicity. This game was played with Becky and Mike.

A rousing five-player game on the U.S. map (excluding the Southeast region), Richard bested the rest of us, powering 17 cities. This game simply doesn't get to the table often enough for me, whether at conventions, game days, or home.

A highly anticipated game for me, and I wasn't disappointed even after my human teammates and I failed to defeat the Cylon menace of Ken and Doug. Carl did an exceptional job of teaching this game and it was in play throughout the weekend.

Although a favorite of mine, I was surprised to see its popularity at MittenCon3. At one point on Saturday evening (at the height of the event), I counted three separate games in progress. In the game in which I was playing, Steve easily crushed Jim, Larry, and me (our three scores were pretty close to each other).

One of my top games, to play this game at MittenCon3 was a treat since I had the first opportunity to meet Dave Neumann, my "programming partner" for the VASSAL TtA module. It was great to meet him and play a face-to-face game with him and a long-time friend, Matt, who was only playing in his second TtA game. At the end of Age III, we were all bunched within three points of each other. My civilization slipped to a three-point win over Dave's after the Age III events were scored, but I was helped somewhat by Matt's unfamiliarity with the effect of the events (he seeded a couple that, while they did score him three Culture, led to more significant Culture gains for me in the end). This new friendship with Dave and my long friendship with Matt, all brought together by pieces of cardboard and wood, symbolize what we originally intended for MittenCon to represent to every participant. I'll remember this game and evening: it was a long game made just a tad longer because of the laughter, the trash-talking, and the side conversations.

Sunday's games turned out to be of a lighter variety, starting with this one as we waited for others to stumble in after the usual late night/early morning gaming from the day before. Darrell's loggers easily got away from Ken's and mine. Cute game.

This game was on my list of possible purchases, since my kids enjoy cooperative games. Sadly, the heavy reliance upon iconography would probably greatly limit their enjoyment and make my explaining the game to their too tedious to grab their long-term interest. It was neat to try, but I'll give this a pass. The ghosts overwhelmed Bruce, Dave, and me.

Another game on the potential purchase list, and this one didn't disappoint. We struggled with a somewhat noncooperative player issue as Bruce taught the game to Dave and me as the fourth player was ready to move us forward at light speed to all of the obscure rules and exceptions. Kudos to Bruce for maintaining his composure and getting us through the game. We only played two rounds of the game because Dave had to depart for his lengthy trip home to Wisconsin. Although he was ahead of us on points, since we didn't finish the game, I contend that he cannot claim this as a rare victory over me (just kidding)!
