Everyone likes different types of games, and the reasons why we like games is for different reasons. This list shows what appeals most to me in games and some of the games I really like that contains these elements. This should create a profile of the types of games I like.

I look forward to (hopefully) reading comments about how your "gaming profiles" might be different or same to mine, and what games you think might fit me.

Theme

Theme is very important to me in games. If a game has a theme that I really like then that will really draw me to it, even if the mechanics might be a little weak. My favorite themes are horror and space opera sci-fi.

Mix of Luck and Strategy

This is a big one for me. My favorite games always mix luck and strategy. Memoir '44 is a good example. The game has a lot of strategy but the luck of the command cards and dice make it fun for me. Race for the Galaxy is another example of a game that mixes luck and strategy that I really like.

Player Interaction

Like many, I really like board games for the social interaction, so games that encourage players to interact with each other score big points with me.

Customization

In high school I was big into CCGs and I really the idea of customization, Dominion has been a good game for me in scratching the customization itch. Stratego Legends is another game I like for the same reason.

Variable Boards

I really like the variety that having a board that changes each time provides. Along with the player interaction, this is one of the elements that really makes Settlers of catan appealing to me. I also like the Command and Color games as well as Zombies for the same reason.

Direct Conflict

Because my wife doesn't care a whole lot for these games, I only get to play a few of the ones she likes, but I really like games that put players in direct conflict with each other. Memoir '44 is another example of a game I really like featuring direct conflict.

Playable for 2 or more

Because I mostly just play games with my wife it is very important that a game plays at least two players well. Games, no matter how good, that don't go down to two players will probably not be games I ever get.
