Although I have always professed to be a gamer rather than a game collector, I think the time has come to admit that there is a bit of a hoarding instinct that has driven me to own more games than I can reasonable play in a year. I am a huge sucker for series of games (why else would I have preordered Pensacola from the Great Battles of the American Revolution without having first played Monmouth which I've owned for about two years now). I also feel the pull of the completionist drive when I delve into (mostly dead) collectible games.

Does anyone else feel that they have a collecting gene that drives them even outside the field of games? If so, please post any non-gaming items that you collect or have collected over the years.

I have a small collection of coins that I have accumulated over the years. I think it developed from my habit of keeping spare change when I travel. As a Latin teacher, I have made it a point to purchase a few decent examples of imperial Roman coins which I use when studying political imagery/propaganda with my students. I also have a collection of all US proof coin sets from 1970-present. I am also in the process of trying to assemble a circulated set of one example of all post civil war US coinage types. This is proceeding slowly as I am trying to acquire decent coins very inexpensively.

I also enjoy collecting US political memorabilia (especially presidential campaign buttons). Although I only make purchases rarely, I always look for buttons and pins when I go to a new antique shop. I also sometimes poke around for bargains on Ebay. I own pins (usualy multiple pins) from every president from McKinley to Obama with the exceptions of Wilson and Coolidge. I am now also trying to purchase pins from their major opponents in each race (which usually run much cheaper thankfully).

I collect NASCAR cards. They only began to have regularly issued cards in 1988 and only one company is still producing cards on an annual basis so it's not beyond reason to collect everything. So far the collection totals over 48,000 cards with nearly 1000 autographs and 600 memorabilia cards.

Musical instruments, particularly guitars. My wife wonders how many "different tones" I need and she's right; I have some guitars that have pretty much the same sonic personality as some others...but it's hard to to resist a sweet guitar that won't cost me much except the space it takes up in the house. Ten years ago I would have sneered at someone playing a Flying V, yet this afternoon I'm going to look at one. I'm not a completest, or an obsessive hoarder, I don't think. I like to believe that I have an appreciation for a broad array of instruments and that I enjoy on many different levels.
That's what we'll tell her, anyway.

Maps. I love 'em. And I sort of collect old maps, not just wargame maps. I don't collect based on value, this is NOT an attempt at hiding a hobby under the rubric of "investment".

Instead, I buy old maps of places that I have a connection to.

For example, I have a 1794 (approx) map of Warwickshire, the county in England where Coventry was located (before Thatcher reorganized England's counties); Coventry is my mom's home town and I lived there as a kid.

I have a mid-19th century French map of the island of Hispaniola, i.e. the island with Haiti and the Dominican Republic. At the time of the map, Haiti ruled the whole island (I lived in Haiti).

I have another mid-19th century map of northeast Asia that shows both Mongolia (then under the rule of the Manchu Dynasty of China but NOT part of China) and Japan - I've lived in both places.

Recently I bought a cool map of Canberra from the 1930s showing the oldest neighborhoods of Canberra; my street is on that map. And a map of Australia, NZ, Dutch East Indies and the South Pacific from 1855.

And various 19th century maps of England, the US, and one of South America that has a little insert map of Ohio to show the scale (I lived in Ohio, too).

Whenever I have the chance, I pick up miscellaneous archaic computer equipment. Not just any random old computers (there are a LOT of not very special ones), but computers which are in some way important or unusual in the history of computing.

As a random sample, I have a Mac Classic which I have wired up to access the internet -- not terribly easy, since it didn't come with an ethernet connection, nor a modem, nor really anything you'd recognize as a network connection at all!

I come across most of these through friends who know of a place (lab, store, etc.) throwing out old equipment, so I get most of them for free. It's a lot of fun to see some of the really old software in action (such as Photoshop... 1.0!).
