I was able to make it, and Gary and I played a game of Paths of Glory that lasted the full 20 turns. Gary played the CP, starting off with Guns of August, and I never got into hammering mode in the West. Instead, I blasted into Limited War by bringing Italy and Yudenich in during Turn 3, and I eventually cleared the Near East all the way to Constantinople. Gary in turn cleared Italy, though it took him the whole game to do so as I was quite stubborn about letting him take it. He also took Verdun and Nancy, but ran out of gas (and time) before he could push me much further.

The most unusual aspect of the game was the fact that I brought the US in after Gary did most of the work to push War Status up to 30. I got the 2VP for Zimmermann and 14 Points, and I also brought in both US armies, though only one got to fight.

You don't see a lot of games go all the way to the end; this was an interesting game with a lot of drama.

This would interest me. Chaotic fun to be had here, so I'm told.
Since this came to me in the UG XV MathTrade, I would like to play before the next UG event.

A good friend of mine, Dom, has expressed interest in SNEW and will be joining us this month. He's a great guy and I'm really excited that he's giving this hobby of ours a try. One game that he's heard of from me and another gaming friend is Wallenstein (first edition) and he'd like to try that. What I'd like to do is have two others join us to play that to start the night and then we can split off into pairs while I teach him Twilight Struggle. A pair playing Warriors of God might make sense. About 2-3 hours for Wallenstein (first edition) and then 3-4 hours for Warriors of God should work out.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in playing Wallenstein (first edition), please let me know! And if we want to stick together for another four player game after that, if say, Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game arrives in time, that would be cool, too!

While we were playing games in the dining room and kitchen, the youngsters were busy with a battle of their own on the living room floor. The battle raged and it sounded like they had a tremendous amount of fun.

Dom, Tory, Scott, Bill, and I played a game of Pacific Typhoon. Scott jumped out to an early lead and no amount of whining by me could stop him from gathering a few more points here and there. He won convincingly with Dom and Bill a distant second and third and Nick and Tory even more distant behind them. Still a very fun game, although this particular play was painful for me!

Tory and I finished the night with a game of Twilight Struggle. We decided to try the new "Chinese Civil War" variant from the latest C3i and rolled for sides. I was the Soviets and jumped out to an early lead, due largely to a successful coup in Italy and the dirty trick of playing Blockade in my final action round of turn 1. This left W. Germany wide open in turn 2, a disastrous one for Tory as she drew a very poor hand full of Soviet events. Because of this, and because I held the Europe Scoring card, I was able to threaten for Control of Europe, which forced Tory into spending a lot of Ops just to break control in battlegrounds. Eventually, I had no choice but to play Europe Scoring with only Domination. Still a bunch of points. Tory was able to recover a bit in turn 3 as it was my turn to have a poor hand and I was further crippled by Tory's headline of Red Scare/Red Purge. Still, Europe was mostly locked up by me, and so that threat still loomed. As we entered turn 4, things were looking good for me everywhere, except for the New World and Africa. Tory capitalized on this and was able to cut my VP lead with scoring in Central America and South America. Meanwhile, I was working to secure Africa and Southeast Asia. In turn 5, the scoring cards I needed finally appeared. I was able to score maximum points in Southeast Asia and Tory's play hinted that she had the Europe Scoring card. She also had Brush War, and was able to use that to successfully take back Italy, but the points I got in Europe were too much and eventually pushed me to the 20VPs for victory.

I was interested to see how the Chinese Civil War variant would play out. In our game, it didn't make that much difference, as I was able to send 3 influence there in turn 1. While that was 3 influence I could have sent elsewhere, it didn't hurt that badly. I can imagine a game where Russia has poor cards or there are pressures to play influence elsewhere that could make the Chinese Civil War a lingering thorn in the Russian player's side. Ultimately, I think it is a brilliantly subtle balancing mechanism for the game that is very easy to add and will most likely be in use for my future games.

This one has been on my "own but have not played" list for a while. I'm a big fan of Breakout: Normandy and Turning Point: Stalingrad, so I'm sure to enjoy this. Anyone wanna help me get this off my list? Please feel free to check that list for any other games you might be interested. Keeping that list short helps me to buy more!

This game has been creating a bit of buzz with the wargamers on BGG. I have been keeping an eye on it for a month or so. Steffen O'Sullivan posted a bit about the game last weekend and pushed me over the edge and I ordered it.
I expect it will be arriving by March 6th, giving me plenty of time to review it before SNEW.
I could also be interested in this.
