Let's start of with the most famous band in the world, the fab 4 from Liverpool, England.

In the United Kingdom, The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one, earning more number one albums (15) than any other group in UK chart history.

This commercial success was repeated in many other countries; their record company, EMI, estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, The Beatles have sold more albums in the United States than any other band.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles number one on it's list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Blondie is an American rock band that first gained fame in the late 1970s and has so far sold over 50 million albums. The band was a pioneer in the early American new wave and punk rock scenes.

In spite of their hits, several factors weakened the group. Deborah Harry achieved a level of celebrity that eclipsed that of other band members. Their album "The Hunter", released on 1982 , was poorly received. Core member Chris Stein was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. These factors led to the dissolution of the group in 1982

Yes are an English progressive rock band that formed in London in 1968. Their music is marked by sharp dynamic contrasts, extended song lengths, abstract lyrics, and a general showcasing of instrumental prowess. Yes blends symphonic and other 'classical' structures with their own brand of musical style. Despite a great many lineup changes, occasional splits within the group and the ever-changing trends in popular music, the band has continued on for over forty years and still retains a large following.

Hüsker Dü was an American punk rock band formed in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota in 1979. The band's continual members were guitarist Bob Mould, bassist Greg Norton, and drummer Grant Hart. Hüsker Dü never achieved mainstream success, but attained an influence far larger than their modest sales figures would indicate. Following a series of successful albums, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1986, becoming one of the first American underground rock bands to sign with a major record label.

Blitzkrieg

Blitzkrieg was formed in October 1980 after signing a record deal with Neat Records. In the early stages of their career they regularly produced gigs in England, but then later split in 1981. Brian Ross most notably went on to join Satan, another metal band, along with stints in Avenger, Lone Wolf and Unter den Linden. In 1984 Ross and fellow founding member Jim Sirotto, along with guitarist Mick Proctor (ex-Tygers of Pan Tang), bass player Mick Moore (of Avenger) and drummer Sean Taylor (Satan/Blind Fury, ex-Raven) then decided that it was time to record the Blitzkrieg album that was originally planned to be released in 1981, A Time of Changes. It was later released in 1985.

Here is the rest of the story, courtesy of Wikipedia...

Rush is the Canadian power trio who have endured beyond their progressive roots to continue with a modern following (I have students who are massive Rush fans even today.). They are fronted by Geddy Lee but much of their progressive sound comes from the writing of Drummer Peart and the guitar virtuosity of Alex Lifeson.

Berlin, on the other hand, started out as a promising New Wave act who succumed to commercialism and soundtrack hell, never to be heard from again (or at least I hope so).

The Boomtown Rats were a new wave group led by Bob Geldof.

All six members were originally from Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. The name "Boomtown Rats" comes from a gang in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory. They became a notable band, but one whose accomplishments were overshadowed by the charity work of lead singer Bob Geldof.

Never would have thought there was actually a game with the same name as the band. I was mad for these guys back in the 70s, and I still love the albums today.

The rock band Starz was a 1970s heavy metal and power pop band from New Jersey, United States. Despite a lack of big commercial success, the band has a lasting cult following and has been cited as a major influence by bands such as Mötley Crüe, Poison and Twisted Sister.

Starz was formed out of the ashes of an early 1970s pop music band, Looking Glass, which had the #1 hit single "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" in the summer of 1972. After the official breakup of Looking Glass, two of the remaining members (Peter Sweval and Jeff Grob) formed Starz as a heavy metal band. Starz was signed to Capitol Records in 1976. The original line up included vocalist Michael Lee Smith (brother of Rex Smith, vocalist for REX, and later a popular actor), Richie Ranno (formerly with Stories) on guitar, Brendan Harkin on guitar, Peter Sweval (Piet Sweval) on bass, and Joe. X. Dube (Jeff Grob) on drums.

Their major hit single was "Cherry Baby" in the spring of 1977, from the album Violation, although they had several other songs chart in the lower half of the Billboard Hot 100. Most fans consider Violation their best album and compare it stylistically to Kiss (Kiss' manager, Bill Aucoin, was also Starz' manager) and Aerosmith. Their third album, Attention Shoppers!, is more in the vein of power pop than heavy metal, featuring a Cheap Trick influence in songs like "X-Ray Spex." Brendan Harkin and Peter Sweval left the band prior to the final album, Coliseum Rock, replaced by Bobby Messano on guitar and Orville Davis on bass.

As a follow up to the Blitzkrieg post comes, in my opinion, the most underappreciated band in all of metal. Their debut album Court in the Act is a masterpiece held back, I think, by the fact that people were confused by the band's name. They weren't even a "Satanic" band. No songs about worshipping the Devil, sacrificing virgins, or anything of the like.

People expecting something along the lines of Venom or Bathory would have been disappointed. People who would have appreciated their brand of NWOBHM-inspired technical metal probably passed them by in their local record shop. Obviously a band with a bit of an identity crisis, they went through constant lineup changes and name changes that certainly didn't help their cause. http://www.metal-archives.com/band.php?id=774

If you're a fan of older Iron Maiden or any of the bands influenced by them, I would encourage you to seek out a copy of Court in the Act and revel in its brilliance.

Later albums had some great songwriting and solid tunes, but once Brian Ross left and Michael Jackson (no, not that one) took over vocal duties, they lost some of their luster in my eyes. Sorry for the shite quality of the video, but it was the only clip I could find with Brian Ross singing a song from Court in the Act.
