No, I guess it won't really be another geeklist about 'how I have became a geek'. I have already written a list about 2008, the year I did become a geek. You can check it here: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/37348

This list is about the years before. From my birth to the end of 2007. A kind of curriculum vitae: the story of my life so far, and also all the games I can think of that I did play during these times.

I was born in 1977. The year when Star Wars was released. Well not in Hungary; by the time it was released here I could have gone to the cinema to watch it (maybe that was in 1982).

It took 12 years until communism was over in Hungary. But until then, I have already played many games as a kid (of course); I might say this was my very first gaming period.

As far as I remember this one (Fekete Péter) was the very first card game I have ever played. I remember we played it a lot with my family when I was very young; I'm not sure I loved it but it was a good experience for a beginning.

I also remember playing a card game that I can't find here, but I will add that to the database when I visit my parents and can take photos of it

But I had a fancier, 5-player magnetic board at home as welll...

We had chess at home. But we didn't really know the rules. I remember playing with my sister. We didn't realise one of us has already took the opponent's king off the board. We continued playing.

(I played it some times later in the high school though; I should learn it more.)

I remember we played several versions of snakes and ladders in the first one or two years of school. Actually we played it in so many forms that when we wanted to design a board game with a friend we just made an nth version of this one with a different theme and some cards of fortune. We really didn't know there might be any other form of board game then.

The cards of fortune idea came from... well, not from Monopoly but this one really had to do a lot with Monopoly. It was a 'socialist version' of monopoly: according to socialist ideology, of course you can't have buildings, hotels or companies of your own; nor can you get money from others... Your one and only aim is buying a flat and then buying the furniture for that flat

(as you can see, the furniture to be bought includes "vacuum cleaner", "TV set", "radio" and "fridge freezer" as well, with a syphon-bottle on the top of the fridge - there was NO flat without a syphon-bottle in Hungary in the '80s!!!)

Capitaly is the Hungarian Monopoly, it was released before World War II. It was re-released in the '80s (socialism and the socialist regime wasn't too strong by that time, especially in Hungary) in a "Régi idők játékai" ("Games from the old times") series. We loved it and played it a lot.
Of course we didn't know anything else. It didn't even bother us the game could last for more than 3-4 hours: I remember we took notes (who was where, what districts and buildings they had) and continued the game days later.

I got this game (just like I got Monopoly) from my (now late) aunt and my grandpa (he died 2 months after my aunt). You were sailing (by throwing dice), you visited some cities and you bought and sold goods for a given rate (you could buy some cheaper, sell some others for a higher price etc.). I did really like it then; I tried it again last year and... umm, no. I still like the ships, though.

Looking back, it seems I got most of my boardgames from my aunt and played my more than 2-person games mosty with her... (I played my 2-player games with my sister.)

Only a friend did have a copy of this game at home... But it was a very popular game in Hungary.
We have even played it some years ago (that's my wife in the middle):

It took me more than a decade to realise this game was not a Hungarian invention at all: it adapted the rules of Scotland Yard to the map of Budapest.

There were no copyright issues in the communist times in Hungary (and not only in Hungary). Any foreign inventions could be stolen, adapted without problem. Was it legal? I guess no, but those were different times.

You didn't know too much about worldwide rights. The flipside? Ernö Rubik designed a cube that became very popular worldwide - as Matchbox started to produce it and reserved the rights for itself. Ernö didn't earn anything from the cubes sold worldwide in the '80s.

We had pick up sticks at home. They were plastic sticks which meant
1. they got twisted sooner or later
2. my father, a DIY-expert (ALL engineers in were DIY experts in the '70 s and '80s) used them whenever he was repairing something or needed a little plastic stick somewhere...so this game fell apart.

Also we played Battleship (Torpedo in Hungary) a lot, also on paper, during classes.
I remember having a teacher, she was the head of the class. She was a beginner and really could not handle adolescent guys so she was shouting a lot. Once I played Torpedo with the best student of the class while she was trying to teach us something we already knew. When she realised we were playing she asked us to go to the blackboard where she took her water-resistant pen and draw stars on our forehead. She was really a beginner; she thought we will be ashamed. Actually we were quite proud of that star on our forehead during the day.
