To me Hero Quest is an important game in the history of games. To me it was the start of a genre of games that shares many elements. The obvious would be to tie it to the dungeons crawl games, and it is an important game in that genre, but I want to follow an other route.

I don't think that Hero Quest did something completly new as a game, games as Space Hulk shares many elements, but it managed to bring some elements to the masses that only had been available to hard core gamers. That is why I want to use it as a starting point.

The important elements are:

* Easy gameplay made possible with special dice. One symbol for hitting and one for protect from hits. Evil and good have different symbols for protection. More dice means more power and more hitpoint means that the miniature is harder get out of the game.

* Nice miniatures.

* Many scenarios.

To follow up on the success of Hero Quest, MB made Battle masters. It was based on Hero Quest as it shared it's world and it shared it's dice.

Instead of the dungeon crawling of Hero quest this was a light wargame.

Important elements where:

* Special dice (but no special symbols for any of the sides)

* A board mad upp by hexes.

* Cards that showed witch unit to move.

* Scenarios

Many things happend in the gaming world between Battle masters and Battle cry. Both MB and Avalon hill was bought by Hasbro.

One of the first game published by "new" Avalon hill was Battle cry. My first thought seeing this game was "Wow they reprinted Battle Masters". Off course Battle cry is a much better game, but essential they are versions of the same game.

The main features in both games where:

* Both have special dice. Both games scores hits the same way. Battle cry adds more symbols and remove the defend symbol.

* Both uses hexes. Battle cry divide the board on flanks and center.

* Both use cards to show the units that are allowed to move, Battle cry makes you choose from a hand, giving more control and strategy.

* Miniatures, both games using them.

* Scenarios.

Released at the same time as Battle cry, this game is sharing the dice system of Hero Quest and is using miniatures. Also have the few against the horde theme as Hero quest and the army aspect of Battle masters.

This game really stands out as the odd one in the "legacy of Hero Quest".

Richard Borg had limited success with Battle Cry, as it soon went out of print. He finally made it with Memoir 44. They are almost the same game.

Hero scape is Hasbro's latest game using the Hero Quest dice. Now a hex based game, with few miniatures on each side. You choose the units you want to move, rather than playing cards.

Collecting miniatures and army building becomes important elements.

Much the same as Memoir 44 and Battle cry. I have not played this game, but I guess it adds the collecting aspect and army building of Hero Scape.

Replace the miniatures with wooden cubes, and add charts that you have to keep an eye on. This makes the game more serious, so serious gamers can finally play the game in daylight. Still almost the same game as Battle cry and memoir.

As far as I know this is the lates addition to the Hero Quest legacy.
