If you play a lot of games it is almost inevitable that you also start a collection of them. You know how it is, there are so many games that you feel that you just must have, but it has not always been like that and it will not always stay that way. This is a history of the rise and fall of a game collection.

The whole thing starts with that one game that opens your eyes to games as a hobby. You just have to own that one. Then you get an invitation to a game night and there you are introduced to a couple of new ones. After you tried those your bookshelf seems a little empty. You order the ones you tried and now you are hooked and it will take a long time for you get rid of this addiction if you ever do. You and your collection will pass through many stages and this was just the first one - the one where you buy games others have presented to you.

Step two is when you realize that there are many more games out there that you never heard of before. All of a sudden there are a bunch of titles that people recommend. Your dozen or so games seems rather puny. You start hunting down those titles that everyone is talking about. The collection grows fast, two dozen and three dozen games. Now you can participate in the discussions you actually own the games and have tried them. But then a new title and then another one get mentioned. What is happening? You are falling behind and your collection habits enter a new stage.

Now you have all the classics, but new titles keep coming out and you decide to get them as soon as you hear of them. You had no idea that so many games were released each year. The post offices around the world cherish as you several times a year order huge quantities of games. You pass a gross of games. More and more of them never gets played and just collects dust on the shelves. You rearrange for your game to get more room in the house, a new bookshelf or a dedicated closet. You start to ask questions like: "Should I have felt on my shelves to minimize wear?", "How do I best package the content of a game to be able to store them standing?", "What does 500 zip-lock bags cost and where do I buy them?".

Soon you realize that it is better to be proactive, games are often released in Essen. If you go there you can pick up all the new stuff all at once. It also give you the possibility to get those titles that are only printed in limited numbers. In under two days you manage to collect over half a years ration of games and also some bits and pieces to your own designs.

The years go by, the whole closet or bookshelf is now full. The new games that you buy don't seem so interesting any more. You keep comparing the new titles with the old ones. When you explain rules you keep saying stuff like "The setup is like in Settlers", "The bidding is like in High Society" or "The auction is like a once around in Modern Art". Everything gets compared with what you already have. You buy fewer games, only what really feels new and fresh gets bought. You wish that you could get more time to play your old favorites but your gaming buddies only want to try the new stuff. Games that you have either rejected or that simply don't appeal to you.

And then you go through your collection and you notice the pile of games that you never played or only played once and your collection takes a completely new turn. You start to sell a few titles that you know that you will never play again because they are so bad. For the first time in years there is actually some space on the shelves. Sure you still buy games but only a tenth of what you used to, so more goes out than comes in. When you have gotten rid of the worst titles you start to wonder if you really should keep all of the rest. They are good but they never get played anyway. You settle for a size of your collection and nice even number; 100 perhaps. And then you sell until you reach that level and decide to only buy a new games if you first get rid of an old one.

And then finally you are no longer an addict. Well you will never be completely free but now you can control it. The games only take up one bookshelf, sells and buys are in balance and somewhere out there is a new collector that picks everything you get rid of.
