Our small multiplayer plan feel apart at the last minute and it was just Dan and I for a night of 2 players. Like always Dan and I can knock out a TON of games in a short time frame, and be in bed by midnight (almost).

We’ve been on a shorter kick lately and poor TS has been gathering dust. It’s not our fault but there are so many amazing shorter two player games out there that its tough to devote one night to a longer game.

Anyway, it was a good night of fun games involving old favorites and new treasures.

Here is a self produced game Dan and I just saw on the amazing small publisgers geeklist last month. We were both excited to try this pizza box homemade treasure from Louisiana. I share Dan’s passion for small games as I have a few home brews that I shill on my friends monthly.

This one just didn’t deliver for me though. Dan seemed to really enjoy it but Dan likes abstract games more than I do. Part of it came from the expectation of a longer game, when in reality its like a short game of chess and a wargame. Some innovative ideas, but just didn’t like it too much. I had some bad rolls, lost units and it was pretty much over. I leave Dan to laud this homebrew. I did like the simple bits and nice map though.

After a disaster of a first game in Denver, I decided to try it again last week with 3, and loved it. Dan and I tried our first 2 player and discovered it's just as good with 2 players. Our first, yes we played it twice, game was longer and fun. I loaded my vault with marble and erected numerous buildings. Dan looked to be in good shape with half of Italy in his stockpile but I ended it before he could materialize the vault points. I took a narrow win. 32-26 I believe.

Game two later in the night was quick. I built the catacombs fairly early for the end. Our vaults were almost tied, but my more valuable vault materials got me a tie with Dans additional bonuses. 23-23

My new resounding favorite. This is a game I call The Curious Case of the Boring Wallon Guard.

We tried the US and Spain with tons of terrain. We hoped the terrain would offset the low unit strengths, well that worked but everyone cowered in the terrain and it was difficult to get a kill.

The Spanish are much tougher than I thought with tons of good command cards, and the American ambushes never materialized. Once American units are hit they are very vulnerable. I killed 3 quickly and then was beaten back having 3-4 at reduced strength. As nightfall drew close we actually fought to a tie, but I had killed more units for the win. Kudos to Dan for hanging in tough with a super weak army.

We still have no expansion but it was fun anyway. I as Old Earth got some investment credits, a bank, and Drop Ships for a multifaceted approach and I was able to utilize some good settle/trade action together with 3-6 pt developments for a good mid 30s score to Dan who’s production empire was a few steps behind but would have caught me in a couple turns. I still love this game expansion or not.

A loaner from Jason, this is on my decent non filler night ending games. The colorful system doesn’t really impress the colorblind but Dan played through it anyway. Apparently believing red and green are the same is an advantage in this one as Dan beat me by 10pts or so. We finished with our second, quick, game of GtR, and now both of us look forward to some multiplayer GtR games.

Wade forgot 2 other games. Both in the Rome box, a collection of 3 games done my Knizia all on the theme of Rome of course.

The first was Imperium, a very cool knizia area control that is worth the price of the Rome box itself. I mistook the order of scoring and lost by 7 but even after that blow out (7 pts is a blow out in any Knizia game) me and wade discussed this one for a little bit. and if your discussing a game after your done. Its done its job.

The other game played from this box was Hannibal vs. Rome, this is a very short wargame done Knizia style. As stated above wade isnt a huge fan of abstract wargames and this is most definatly abstract. I nice diversion but Imperium was much, much better
