Yup, I know there are alot of geeklists out there that list games based on Dungeons & Dragons, fantasy adventures and dungeon crawls. However this little list of mine will primarily be for me to compare some of those games with some of my favourite D&D mechanics. I really miss playing Dungeons & Dragons so every time I find a board game that re-creates the gameplay and/or atmosphere of D&D I get pretty excited.

As with most of my other lists, I can only really list games that I have actually played, so please feel free to add some more games to the list. Please use the following checklist when listing (even if the game doesn't qualify please list it anyway):

- Fantasy Setting
- Fighting resolved with dice rolls
- Skill checks/Saving throws
- Maps
- Equipment/Gear
- Character progression/leveling
- Storyline/Quest
- Team play
- Magic
- Set Movement points
- Variable Player Powers

OH and feel free to correct me when I make a blunder, as I can be quite daft at times!

YES - Fantasy Setting
YES - Combat resolved with dice rolls
YES - Skill checks/Saving throws
NO - Maps (well not really, the locations are cards on the table, but even when they are layed out in the tree diagram variant they look pretty abstract. This might be a matter of opinion)
NO - Equipment/Gear (mostly spells, not much in the way of weapons or armor)
NO - Character progression/leveling (if your group isn't strong enough to complete a quest, you actually need to get a replacement group member rather than level anyone up)
YES - Storyline/Quest
NO - Team play (although each player does get to run their own "team")
YES - Magic
YES - Set Movement points
YES - Variable Player Powers

Comment: This really needed some expansions. It felt more like a conversion of a Final Fantasy game than D&D

YES - Fantasy Setting (part legend, part fantasy)
NO - Combat resolved with dice rolls
NO - Skill checks/Saving throws (there are lots of skills that can be utilized but no actual skill checks).
NO - Maps (the boards are portraits of a place rather than maps)

NO - Character progression/leveling
YES - Storyline/Quest
NO - Team play (although each player does get to assemble their own "teams" throughout the game)
YES - Magic
YES - Set Movement points

NO - Fantasy Setting
YES - Fighting resolved with dice rolls (although it doesn't differ from skill checks)
YES - Skill checks/Saving throws
YES - Maps (the board)
YES - Equipment/Gear
YES - Character progression/leveling
YES - Storyline/Quest (not a very strong feature, in the form of adventure cards)
NO - Team play
NO - Magic
YES - Set Movement points
YES - Variable Player Powers

Comment: This is my default recommendation when someone asks about adventure games. It's different, because it is essentially a Eurogame, but it has most items in the checklist. However, it doesn't feel anything like D&D, I suppose. One thing it does not have that might turn D&D players off is a fantasy setting.

(otherwise known as "Dungeon!" for people with the original version)

YES - Fantasy Setting
YES - Combat resolved with dice rolls
YES - Skill checks/Saving throws (secret doors and ambushes)
YES - Maps (the board)
YES - Equipment/Gear (not many though)
NO - Character progression/leveling
NO - Storyline/Quest (generic loot the dungeon scenario)
NO - Team play (the game is competitive, although players can team up briefly to fight strong monsters)
YES - Magic
YES - Set Movement points
YES - Variable Player Powers (not much variation though)

Comment: With some more team play this could have felt much more like D&D. As it stands now its just a generic dungeon crawler.

- Fantasy Setting = YES
- Fighting resolved with dice rolls = SORT-OF (Uses numbered cards instead)
- Skill checks/Saving throws = YES
- Maps = YES (GM has a 'secret' map of the dungeon, Players see dungeon tiles as they go - moving their minis from room to room)
- Equipment/Gear = YES
- Character progression/leveling = YES
- Storyline/Quest = YES
- Team play = YES

- Set Movement points = SORT-OF (Movement in combat = change range one tile. There is less fine-tactical movement)

This game is quite D&D-like. It was designed as a fast-play, portable, no-prep required, dungeon-crawl.

YES - Fantasy Setting
YES - Combat resolved with dice rolls
YES - Skill checks/Saving throws (Character combat traits add power dice to rolls and those die rolls can be deemed as skill checks, and power dice are also used for saving throws against Fire, Webs etc)
YES - Maps (the modular board)
YES - Equipment/Gear
YES - Character progression/leveling (more skills and training points can be bought, and the Road to Legend expansion expands on the leveling aspect)
YES - Storyline/Quest
YES - Team play
YES - Magic
YES - Set Movement points

Comment: I've played the game and it has a very strong D&D feeling to it. Needs a bar fight expansion. Or maybe just play "Red Dragon Inn" afterward.

YES - Fantasy Setting
NO - Combat resolved with dice rolls
YES - Skill checks/Saving throws (well only one really, you roll a die to avoid being wounded when running away!)
NO - Maps
YES - Equipment/Gear
YES - Character progression/leveling
NO - Storyline/Quest (generic raid the dungeon scenario)
NO - Team play (minor alliances and trading can take place)
YES - Magic
YES - Set Movement points
YES - Variable Player Powers (not right away, but as your class and race changes throughout the game).

Comment: An obvious spoof of D&D, and yet they didn't use dice for combat. And no map!
