Admit it, you've been there.

You make an impulse purchase of an obscure game, open it up and read the rules, and then the shock hits -- "HEY, this is just Monopoly!"

This is a list for those roll-and-move games heavily inspired by Monopoly, whether they are straight rip-offs or cleverly disguised homages.

This is also a list for all Monopoly variants and expansions, official and unofficial alike!

Note: Please do not add any of the zillions of official Monopoly theme editions - those can be covered in another list! (Or found through a simple name search.)

Absolutely crazy fast paced Fast Food Franchise is a terrific game! It's luck heavy, but lots of decisions involved. The middle of the board is a kind of abstract representation of the United States and it's major markets. You land on a market and buy it and then you decide what franchise you want to open. You can go for cheap (like Ice Cream or Donuts) or for expensive (Steak&Salad or Burgers) or something in between (Pizza or Chicken). You can buy advertising spaces which haul you around the board and launch hostile takeover attempts if you have the right cards and cash. Games last 1.5-2 hours and afterwords players are already plotting how they'll smash your Dark&Gooey with their Family Style next time. One of the three or four most played games at the game nights I participate in.

James Ernest's approach to Monopoly: Why do you get $200 every time you go around the board? You should have to -earn- the money.

Instead of buying property, you put in applications for jobs, which you randomly get based on the number of applicants. However, the more jobs you take, the less free time you have to actually move around the board. Once you get a job, you move on to the middle track, where you need to find a place to live (like getting a job). Once you've done that, you can go on to the inner track. You need to pass the black Get Out! space on the inner track four times to win.

Of course, if you go broke, Mom just bails you out. She won't pay your rent, though.

Want a game you can open up, start playing and say " WOW! This is Monopoly"? Then play Corporate Pursuit by Rachat, Inc.
The game uses 24 real companies such as AT&T, CNN, Kodak, Duke Power, TWA, American Airlines, Heinz, Toys R Us, etc. Rather than buying properties, players buy, sell, and trade stock in the companies. The airlines in Corporate Pursuit take the place of the railroads in Monopoly. A space called Frozen Assets takes the place of jail. S.E.C. Investigations is the "Go to Jail" (Frozen Assets) space. And the World Trade Center is used instead of "Go". (Passing this space, you collect a salary of $2,000,000 rather than "Go's" measly $200.)
An obvious Monopoly "ripoff", but very entertaining just the same. In fact, I enjoy it more than Monopoly. Definitely worth playing if you like monopoly-type games.

"This game is a Monopoly variant, with an international airways theme. The board depicts the world and many of the world's major cities. Each player controls an airline (represented by a coloured tail fin). To kick off with a player starts at home base and picks up a card which has the name of a city on it. The player flies to that city and returns to base, then gets the landing rights for that city. Anyone landing there in future must pay for the priviledge. More landing rights must be paid if the player owns a 'set' made up of several cities in that country/continent."

"A somewhat simplified Christian-themed Monopoly game where instead of bankrupting the other players, the object is to build a church. This results in faster play in which players aren't eliminated before the game ends. Imagine playing Monopoly with the only goal of being the first to have a property with a hotel, and you get the basic idea."

Game number 6668 - hmmm....

"A Monopoly-like game with a different objective. You have to buy Business License for various products, build industries and try to make sales (randomly driven) to upgrade your industries. The first player to accumulate 10 million dollars win. The interaction between players is also somewhat different from Monopoly as there are no trading phase and the players don't pay (and ruin) each other. All transactions are done with the bank."

"Pop the cork off any gathering with WINEOPOLY! Players buy favorite wines, collect bunches of grapes and trade them in for decanters. Sounds easy enough but add Import Taxes and serving faux pas and it becomes a little more difficult and a lot more fun! Learn while you play! Each deed back contains wine descriptors and fun facts about each wine. It's all fun and games until you're sent to the Wine Cellar to age-then you're out of the game for three turns. So choose your token (wine bottle, cork, wine glass, cheese, grapes, or a carafe) and advance to CHEERS! Who knows? You may be elected president of the wine club or you may be penalized for serving obtrusively malodorous cheese!"

"This seems to be a knock-off of a Monopoly game in which you travel through time 'buying' people and inventions. The board and game play is similar, except that all the prices are $50-$75 more and the 'Chance' and 'Community Chest' cards are very different from Parker Brothers 'traditional' cards. Also, the colors are a bit different than the Parker Brothers 'traditional' colors. Other than that, they play the same."

Sheffield was a major steel-making city. This game is a charity version to promote local businesses. The board wraps around the tray to become the box.

You don't buy properties, you buy votes. But you've got the cards, the money, and even jail. When I drag this game out to play during the presidential elections every four years, I begin my explanation of the rules by saying, "It's just like Monopoly, except..."

An oldies but a goodie when it comes to Monopoly rip-offs. Players buy stocks in companies or franchises. What my group loves about the game is the fact that it uses real companies and logos. Players can own stock in Disney, Ford, Levi, Hershey, purchase Kentucky Fried Chicken or an NFL franchise. Also, you could patent the Lightbulb or Television, copyright Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck and even have the great idea of the Whopper or Cornel Sanders Secret Recipes.

"Mafiopoly is not a stand-alone game, but a deck of cards and set of optional rules to be added to Parker Brothers' Monopoly board game. Players are given the option of playing as a Mafia player (Mafioso) or a regular player (Citizen). Citizens play by the normal Monopoly rules while Mafiosi draw from the Mafia Card deck every time they pass Go. Mafiosi also have other special rules, such as the ability to grift $50 from the bank every time any player passes Go. These advantages are somewhat balanced by the innate dangers of the profession: the Mafia Cards may cause a player to fall under investigation by a Federal Grand Jury or fall victim to as assassination attempt. One of the other Mafioso players may even put out a hit on you!"
