Game Gathering 5 was held in La Canada, Calif., on 2004 August 14. The event was hosted by Jennifer Schlickbernd, and there were ~40 attendees. I'm listing the games that I played there, and encouraging the other attendees to make additional comments or add new items to the list. It would be nice if this list turned into a sort of mega-session report, complete with comments and/or details from all who played.

This was my first game of the day, and the other players were Scott, Alfonzo, Jennifer, and Rebecca. I think Scott won, and that Jennifer ruined Rebecca's game with one of her train placements. I wish I could remember more - that's probably why I should make this list as soon as the event's over, while the details are still fresh.

I think this game was played at least 3 other times during the day, so if any of you who played in any TtR games (including mine, of course) read this, please feel free to add a comment and/or details of your game.

This was my second game of the day, and I was joined by Scott, Alfonzo, and Rebecca. I was only collecting points in blue and green, and started conflicts to try to gather points in the other colors. Unfortunately for Scott, he was the recipient of most of my hostility, and was also competing with Rebecca for the monuments. Alfonzo was holding his own, also. I managed to win.

This game was also played a couple of other times during the day, also. Please feel free to add comments/details.

My 3rd game of the day was I'm The Boss!, with Scott, Rebecca, and Alex. I really enjoyed this one, it was my favorite of the "new to me" games I played at GG5.

The game is much lighter and quicker than I'd believed it to be. It has "Take That!" elements which might not be welcome in a longer and/or heavier game. But as it stands, this is one of my favorite negotiation games. I was able to squeak past Scott for the win.

While others played in the Puerto Rico tournament (won by Rebecca), I played this game. It was new to Jeff, Alex, and me.

It has cardplay, and it involves players either trying to kill the President (KGB) as he wanders from one end of Pennsylvania Avenue to the other, or trying to keep the C-in-C alive (Secret Service). The KGB killed the President in our game, and even managed to escape relatively easily.

After lunch, Jeff and Alex joined me for this strange variant on trick-taking card games, new to all of us. I probably didn't teach it very well, and we would have been better off using the suggested initial set-up in the rule book rather than randomly selecting a starting hand.

The game involves boy birds, and girl birds, and offering worms to the females in order to "win" their eggs. There are bonuses for winning eggs of your own color, and also for winning eggs of all colors. I would definitely need to try this game again before giving it a "yea" or "nay."

Next, I managed to twist some arms to get this game played. I was joined by Jeff and Alex, and it was new to Alex. I had played this game for the very first time just two weeks earlier, and was looking forward to playing it again.

We played the starter set-up for a 3-player game. I built an early city in the double-quarry area for income, and managed to avoid having that city lose two citizens each turn, though Jeff's nearby city took one citizen every round. Jeff and Alex built up their early cities, and I founded my 4th city in order to give me the food production that my quarry city lacked. At the end of the game, I was able to balance the farming city with the help of a Golden Times card, and that provided me with the margin of victory.

Based on just two plays, I later traded my copy of Taj Mahal for a copy of this game. I probably won't get to play it often, but it is my favorite game that I've learned in recent months.

My 7th game of the day was Oasis, and I was joined by Alex, Jeff, and Andrew. This game was new to Andrew.

I like this game quite a bit, maybe more than I like that "other" Moon game with the trains. I think the offer mechanism gives just the right amount of tension and uncertainty to what would otherwise be a dull tile-laying game. While all of us scored well in 2 out of the 4 areas, Alex won the game by also scoring well in a 3rd area.

I recommend playing with the rule that gives the person winning the Number 1 priority marker an extra tile. It keeps the game shorter, and makes the offer phase even more competitive.

This was our next game, new to both of the other players, Alex and Andrew. It is a quick-playing game of deduction and guesswork. Alex won with a slick play of deception that kept me from winning on my turn, and taking the victory for himself on the next turn.

With the Game Gathering drawing to a close, Alex and I played a quick game of Street Soccer. He whipped me by a score of 3 or 4 to 1, as I hurt my field position badly by trying to catch up.

After having it on my must-try list for nearly a year, I finally got to play Amun-Re. Definitely worth the wait.
