A collection of games popular in Europe around 1380 - 1400 AD. I will keep adding to this. For now more information is needed, and mostly more historical sourcese needed.

Got more historical information on a game on the list? Add a comment! Got another game? Add a comment and I'll look into it. My first GeekList, so tell me if I'm doing something wrong and I'll try to fix it.

El-quirkat brought to Spain by the Moors in early medieval times where it got its Spanish name Alquerque. The picture is painted in 1283 and can be seen in the book "Libro de Juegos", the first known Eeuropean book of games.

Know during medieval times as Tables (the name backgammon probably invented in the 18th century). Hated by the church, loved by the commoners.

The pieces from Tables (not quite backgammon), the board from chess and the rules from Alquerque, and a new game is born...

Modern version created sometime in the early 15th century, but versions played earlier.

"[Chess] is certainly a pleasing and ingenious amusement, but it seems to have one defect, which is that it is possible to have too much knowledge of it, so that whoever would excel in the game must give a great deal of time to it, as I believe, and as much study as if he would learn some noble science or perform well anything of importance; and yet in the end, for all his pains, he only knows how to play a game. Thus, I think a very unusual thing happens in this, namely that mediocrity is more to be praised than excellence." - Castiglione, The Book of the Courtier, 1528, Book II para. 31, Singleton translation
