After buying this game, I realized that I had purchased the old edition from my FLGS. In a rage of spite, I downloaded the new rules and extra maps, went to the loca Staples store and had them printed out on nice expensive cardstock. I then put the new pages in sleeves which I put in a giant binder to serve as my primary rulebook. It cost me about $50-$100 to make. My girlfriend wasn't happy.

I carry a 20-sided die in my pocket every day. For our wedding, we got some Chessex 6-sided dice to scatter around the center pieces. After we picked those up, I looked at the dice every time I went to a game store hoping to find a matching set of D&D dice. I finally found one the week of the wedding, so I bought the set and swapped out my trusty d20 with a wedding-themed d20. I had it in my pocket for the entire wedding and every day since. We even used the die to make a last minute decision about wedding music

It seemed like whoever got the middle (7, 7) spot, or the first point, was destined to win the game. Were those early advantages truly the breaking point? Was there any point to finishing out a game?

We played many (many) times, noting first point, who got (7, 7), who won - all sorts of numbers that we crunched to find out, indeed, it only seemed that way.

A while back, I was cruising around BGG and saw Cash 'n Guns. "That is the perfect game to introduce my friends to gaming," I said.

I went about acquiring a copy, but it was out of stock or quite pricey at the time.

"Not to worry!" I said as I walked into walmart and purchased a matching set of nerf guns, and combined them with a couple others that I had. I took a deck of playing cards and wrote "Bang!" and "Clic-Clic-Clic" on the back of them. I pulled poker chips to use for cash. It was a $50 investment, all in all.

I got to "Game Night," a dorm event with about thirty people around. I pull out Cash 'n Guns.

What proceeded to happen was exactly what you'd expect to happen when you mix nerf guns and college students.

...I now own the actual Cash 'N Guns game.

One summer during my teen years, I made player cards for all of the players that played in the National League in 1964. (1964 had a particularly good pennant race. That was the year that the Phillies were up 6 and 1/2 games with 12 to play and lost.)

I wanted to use the APBA advanced player charts, but wanted to set it up so that the pitchers played more of a role (a la Strat-O-Matic). I would use an extra die to see if the result came from the hitter's card or the pitcher's card. This took a lot of number crunching. For instance, for a hitter that was a member of the Milwaukee Braves, I set up his card so that it would reproduce his batting statistics against an average National League pitcher minus the Braves pitchers.

I did the same for all the hitters and pitchers that played in the National League in 1964, calibrating their player cards, so that they would reproduce results against a league average hitter or pitcher (always remembering to subtract out their own team's totals before computing the averages).

Did I mention that this was in the day before we all had personal computers and I did all this with a calculator, my copy of Sports Encyclopedia:Baseball and a lot of paper?

It didn't work out so well. I miscalculated somehow and the pitchers wound up walking too many guys.

And yet...God that was fun.

I bought a jigsaw puzzle called, "The Games of our Lives" at the Flea Market at Atlanta Games Fest. I brought the puzzle home with me to Mississippi, put it together, and glued it on a backboard.

I was going to frame it and hang it up somewhere, but Hurricane Katrina came and the backing and puzzle fell apart in the flood. I still have the old box in my attic, though.

My best friend and I made a magnetic version of Carcassonne, including several expansions (River, Inns and Cathedrals, Traders and Builders, King and Scout) on 2 magnetic dry erase boards, which we hinged together. We printed the pieces on magentic paper in full color. Each tile was no more than 3/4".

It cost us less than $40 in parts, and we played it several times on the flights to and from the east coast and Las Vegas.

I like the game UR so much I made a custom wooden copy.

Cost me approximately $100-120 in materials. I attached the scanned tiles (printed on full page label sheets) to the wooden pieces and spent HOURS and hours experimenting in the best way to protect them. I used polyurethane, spray acrylic and finally settled with shellac. I made special Ziggarats to go along with it and even re-allocated an old cigar humidor for it's box.

I spent at least 40-50 hours in the process of making it, over the course of about a month. Each tile has approximately 7-8 coats or protectiveness on it.

I also made some extra blue tiles for possible variants. The Lake is a pretty good variant we came up with.

I made an extra 20 tiles (in black) to see if I could scale the game up to 5-6 players. So far, this is the only thing that hasn't worked out...yet.

This game will live longer than me & the pieces are basically waterproof at this stage.

I listen to the Dice Tower podcast.

(That alone is sufficient to get a big ol' shake from my husband, but as we know, that's seriously small beer in the geek sweepstakes.)

I like the Dice Tower so much that I donated money to it (geek point #2) and received some dice towers as a "Thanks for your support" thing.

On receiving the towers, I learned they were the portable, modular acrylic Chessex type, and, well, we already had one of those for each of our dice-tower-using family members (geek point #3).

What to do? The answer was clear: What time is it? Dice tower pimpin' time! I started a thread in the DIY forum asking people how the heck one might go about such a thing (geek point #4). (Thanks, folks!)

was totally up for it.

So, here's the equation:

Mother + 7 year old daughter + towers + Sharpie markers + Loctite glue = Total Awesomeness!!1!

(Well, it equals some pretty amateurish looking marked-up, glued-together dice towers. But, since I'm a lame, craft-impaired amateur and my daughter is seven, I'm hoping that this entitles us to some slack. A lot of it.)

Pictures:

On my daughter's tower, you can see the mighty fire horse with flames shooting from its mane and hooves. This dice tower could burn you!

I don't even try for representational art -- I know at least some of my limitations -- but you'll note, um, a lot of blue and green here, because I wanted to match . . .

. . . the felt! Yes, our towers are acoustically modified.

Several years ago, I met this girl at the sandwich shop next to where I work. I thought her out of my league, but decided to try pursuing her anyways. I was pleasantly surprised when she was showing quite a bit of interest back. At some point during our conversation, we got to talking about old Nintendo games and I mentioned that I still get my NES out from time to time. She got excited and told me she would really like to come over and play Nintendo with me. Of course, I took her up on this. She looked through my games and decided we should play Super Mario Bros.(I game I was hopelessly addicted to as a kid). Since I am fairly good at SMB, I gave her the first controller, so she wouldn't have to wait for me to lose a life before she gets to play. She made it about halfway through the first level and died. I then proceeded to make it to somewhere around level 6-2, going level by level, before I died. Her second turn lasted about 30 seconds before she died again. I played though a couple more levels, then jumped down a hole, so she could play. She lasted about another 30 seconds before losing her last life. I not only went on to finish the rest of the game, I killed myself several times on the next to last level, so that I would only have 1 chance to beat the last level. Oddly enough, she didn't seem nearly as interested in me after that...Yes, I know this isn't board game related, but it's close...
