I notice that since Carcassonne arrived on the scene there have been quite a number of games using similar mechanics appear. Mostly laying of adjacent tiles, possible trying to keep some features consistent and so forth.

Could you help me figure out what they are and which ones are worth playing? I've added a couple that immediately sprung to mind for me to start with, but please add any other games you know of.

I already have a list that collects pretty much all the Carcassonne games and expansions, so this item will just be a placeholder for all of those.

In this great little 2-player game, you're discovering an island, complete with fjords, and figuring out where to place your settlements as you go. You need to line up water and mountains and meadows as you build and the tiles are hexagons.

Once all the tiles have been played, the game moves into a second phase where you expand your fields out from your settlements trying to control the largest possible area of land.

This game uses triangular tiles which the players place (as gods) trying to create continents and islands. On those landmasses, they vie with each other to have the most worshippers. Quite a nasty game, by all accounts.

The most recent game in this series. In this game, players are constructing a medieval monastery (respecting various building constraints among the buildings and roads). Plays also have relatively mobile monk-eeples which can move around and work on various tiles or even just kneel down and pray.

Square tiles and fairly relaxed placement rules as well as pretty individual buildings, this still has a Carcassonne-like feel to it.

Here the tiles are 3-hexes stuck together and they can be stacked into a 3-d island shape. There are some restrictions on volcano placement, but otherwise players are just trying to create areas of the same type of landscape and then try to take advantage of it.

I'm adding this one because I'd love to hear about games which are related but not really exactly the same as Carcassonne as well!

I traded for this because it's damn cute, but is it worth playing? Not so sure. The double-sided tiles is just such an awful, horrible idea in a game where you end up with a ton of tiles in your hand and have to keep them hidden. Looks good though.

You play rhomboid and triangular tiles as your prospectors explore the Lost Valley looking for gold. It's a very thematic, fun and quick playing game IMO. Well worth hunting down a copy.

Not very pretty, but cheap, little, quick and a surprising amount of fun. But it is only tile laying.

Cube Farm, another Cheapass pocket game, adds a territory-claiming feature, too.

This game, designed by Klaus Teuber, precedes Carcassonne by a few years, and I think it was the first to use that mechanic. Here you only have land and water, and you can take more than one tile in your turn, but you must decide beforehand on where you will try to fit them. I haven't played the original, but I own the more recent version, Entdecker: Exploring New Horizons. Definitely worth playing.

If you don't mind the bad implementation of the theme, and play by the original German rules, it is a pretty good game.

Very good game where you are required only to extend paths, but you want to place animals of the same type together in order to attract visitors to your zoo. The tiles are acquired via blind bidding.

There is a board which imposes boundaries for where you place the hexagons, but otherwise I think this qualifies with the intent of your request.

After finding and trying it on spielbyweb, this moved from my "I'm thinking about it" list to "place on next order if at all possible".

This entertaining solo tile game is available in both bright colour and printer friendly black & white and has only 40 tiles (on 2 pages) to print out. It's a placement game to try to get the highest score possible.

It's also got a bunch of fan re-themes: polar, bees, Star Wars, squirrels...

1. It's free!
2. It's very small.
3. It's fun to play!
