Almost every weekend my aunt and uncle would come over and play pinochle with my parents. I would fall asleep to the sound of cards shuffling and a post game analysis by someone of why they bid a certain way and what they were trying to do. I learned many things from the stories they would tell while playing. Also, there were the phrases that would come up that still stick with me. Phrases such as, "You sent a boy out to get the beer." (When it was hoped a 10 or smaller card would win the trick, but the other side had an ace.) or "Are we here to eat or to play cards?" (My aunt and my mother would always try to serve some new recipe during the games. "The jacks are throwing up their so dizzy, you shuffled them enough just deal out the cards."

Unfortunately, only my sister and I still play pinochle, but rarely. None of my nieces and nephews know how to play.

My grandfather was German and taught as Skat and Sheepshead when I was young. My grandmother taught us Forty-Five, Spoil Five and Piquet. This games were common and cheap entertainment when I was growing up.

Here is a list a games I played in my family until I left home. I wish they were more popular, I miss them.

A good two handed game of discarding and card play. I remember reading an old Hoyle on methods of discard and play. One of the oldest games known.

During World War II the "Army-Navy" brand of Double-Pack Pinochle became popular among soldiers. Pinochle decks are still available, but the came seems to be fading away.

This was once called the national card game of the United States. Every card historian has a different version of were the game originated. Two jacks of the same color become the two highest in the suit. (Left and right Bauer) In a variation developed around 1880, a jack from another deck was shuffled in and designated as "Best Bower". The U.S. Playing Card Company started including Best Bower cards with a jester on it. Thus was the origin of the joker card.

Not the rummy game, but the form of bid euchre. We would play this game three handed and four handed around the clock. Only three of us were interested in a card game on a visit after Thanksgiving at my nephew's house. I suggested 500, nobody in my family remembered how to play.............sad.

My grandfather taught me the Tournee version of the game which has seen been abandoned by Germany, but remains in the American Skat League Rules. This game is every more scientific than Contract Bridge, but it has a stiff learning curve. Played with some students from Austria one time. It should be more popular.

This fad of 1955 never died out in my family. In college a kid in my dorm bought David Parlett's book of card games which had more streamlined directions on how to play. With all the variations of Oh Hell, crazy eights and chinese climbing games on the market, I suprised nobody has but out a commericial version of this game.

Pitch, Setback, High,Low, Jack and Game survive in some bars in New England which even have leagues and championships. This was a standard summer picnic favorite. More variations that Runebound has expansions. Few kids know how to play it.

I was initially scared off of this game because of the board. Now I think it is a whole lot of fun because it has the "two games in one" aspect of scoring points and playing cards. Each of the two phases requires a different thought process. In some ways it is a tiny bit like the differences in the two phases of Galaxy Trucker.

This has long been a family favorite. When our daughter first got married, five of us (including son and son-in-law) played Hearts almost every weekend. Gradually, as we learned about and acquired a closetful of Eurogames, our old standby card games got shuffled (pun intended) to the bottom of the choices list, so we seldom play this game these days.

Maybe we should remember to select it for a game day now and then.

Just learned this recently, thanks to EndersGame's excellent overview. Two-player trick taking and point making that demands concentration. Now our fall-back game for when we're stranded with just a deck of cards.

A fun push your luck bidding game. It has taken many forms in many countries. My uncle from Canada played this game so well and beat us so often, we knew there was skill to it, but we couldn't seem to learn it well. Played a guy from France at a bed and breakfast in Maine. He told me that we better not play for money because he was good. I'm grateful we didn't because he was. Haven't played it in years.

I think this is one of the better trick taking games there is.You also need to try and figure how many tricks you will be able to win.It seems that wizards and rage are basically the same game with special cards thrown in and are both pretty well received and played on this site. For me though I played wizards at a game day a while back and it was fun but i think the special cards ruined it for me I would have rather played Oh Hell with a plain deck of cards.Maybe there is something uncool about playing a game that only uses a deck of cards?

My friends and I used to play a variation of this game all the time, which we called 2s. It wasn't until recently that I discovered that this was the game we were playing. Our version was actually pretty close to being Tichu, from what I understand.

Sadly, with college, break-ups, and other factors getting in the way, the circle of friends was broken up, and it's been years since I've had a chance to play.

Love this game. Played with my mom since I was about 8. You play with a double deck and I could barely hold the cards in my little hand. Haven't played it in a long time though. As I recall it was much better with 4 players; 2 sets of partners.

I've played this one also since I was a little girl. It's quick and really fun, much the way cribbage is quick and really fun. You use the cards in your hand and the cards on the table to make combinations for different point values.
