Almost every weekend my aunt and uncle would come over and play pinochle with my parents. I would fall asleep to the sound of cards shuffling and a post game analysis by someone of why they bid a certain way and what they were trying to do. I learned many things from the stories they would tell while playing. Also, there were the phrases that would come up that still stick with me. Phrases such as, "You sent a boy out to get the beer." (When it was hoped a 10 or smaller card would win the trick, but the other side had an ace.) or "Are we here to eat or to play cards?" (My aunt and my mother would always try to serve some new recipe during the games. "The jacks are throwing up their so dizzy, you shuffled them enough just deal out the cards."

Unfortunately, only my sister and I still play pinochle, but rarely. None of my nieces and nephews know how to play.

My grandfather was German and taught as Skat and Sheepshead when I was young. My grandmother taught us Forty-Five, Spoil Five and Piquet. This games were common and cheap entertainment when I was growing up.

Here is a list a games I played in my family until I left home. I wish they were more popular, I miss them.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Bridge! Difficult game and often played by zealots! But, if you can find some fun loving people that play it for fun (not easy to do) it is awesome. It carries a similar mystique to chess. There are scores of books written about strategies and hands and bidding. There's a whole code for the bidding process and serious players get quite upset if you don't know what they're "saying" when they bid. My mom is quite a serious player, but she is kind enough to play with me sometimes.

I can´t believe there are comments on the german card games, but nobody wanted to enter this one.

Maybe, because there are ground rules, but nobody plays according to them.
I have learned completely different regional rules and those players live only 50 km apart.

This game is widely played in Hungarian pubs...and I don't know if it's played anywhere else. A great game, though.

If you start with "local" games, here is one played in Spain, with the standard spanish deck of cards.

This one has been around since 1906 and still has quit a few followers. For a serious gamers game you have to throw out the bird card and play what some call Dixie. Very good card game.

My gf's a big fan of this. We used to play a lot, but since I almost always lose, we shifted to mostly board games. I could play it again though, nice game - if not very deep.

Rage! Or as this has been lovingly nicknamed around my house F*** You Mom! Because of my mother's ability to royally screw you by taking one more or less tricks at the worst possible moment for you, and her ability to get the same number she bet...while thinking she had too many or not enough.

I used this picture because you can find this version of the game put out my Fundex games for about $3.00 at your local Wal*Mart these days.

Ok, the admins added my entry for 1000
Peek on the page, there's a link to all the rules, but in a nutshell - you try to achieve 1000 points over a series of rounds, knowing that if you do not gain the number of points you declared, you will lose that amount. It does take a while to play, but it stays my favourite card game.

I learned this from my brother-in-law, and he learned it from a Argentinian friend.

Best played in teams of two.

A bit like poker, but you need to win the majority of the three folds (round) to win points.

You can increase the value of the round if you think you will win.
You say "Truco"!

Your opponents then say either "Yes" or "No".

The round value went from 1 point to 2 points.

You can also call "Envido".

This is where you have at least two cards of the same suit.

Figures are worth 10, all other cards are worth 10 + the value of the card.

You add up your 2 best cards and declare the value of your "Envido".

The winner then wins 1 point; these points are in addition to the round points.

The 1st player/team who gets 30 points, wins!

If all you have is a deck of cards, this is the best game running for four players. You can find the rules at http://www.pagat.com/pointtrk/kaiser.html.

Having to chase down the 5H while ditching the 3S, and still make your bid is what makes this game great.

I suggest you play with the following variants:

1. Keep all the 7's in the game and play with a two card kitty that the winning bidder picks up after calling trump. He/she then discards any two cards except the 5 or 3.

2. The dealer must bid the minimum if no other player has bid. Dealer must also out-bid previous players (can't match a previous bid) if a bid has been made.

3. Minimum bid is 7.

4. If you get the three you must collect at least three points to balance it. (In other words if you score -1 you lose 3 points anyway.)

5. If your score is 47 or more you must bid to score points. 52 or more wins the game.

6. You may declare a mis-deal before bidding begins if your hand has no aces, no face cards, no 3 and no 5.
