I recently acquired reprints of the classic Space: 1889 RPG and some of the associated miniatures and boardgames. (You can order reprints from here.) I've not got the opportunity to actually play any of them yet, but I like the alt-victorian setting a lot, and I thought it might be interesting to do a geeklist about the the games set in this universe. Those who have played them are invited to share their experiences.

Very brief introduction for those not in the know: The ether turned out to be real, and its exploitation allowed Thomas Edison to build an "ether flyer" in which he reached the red planet in 1870. Mars turns out to be inhabited by a (suspiciously humanlike) native civilization, that once built the huge canals crisscrossing the planet but is now long since decadent. Nineteen years later, the planet has become yet another playground for the European powers, with the British and their crown colony of Syrtis Major in the lead. It's most valuable resource is "liftwood", a material with natural antigravity properties that allow the construction of flying ships much more sleek and agile than balloons or zeppelins.

I'll leave the list open for additions in case I've missed any.

Being an RPG, Space: 1889 itself doesn't have a BGG entry. Adversaries will have to do as a place-holder: it's a set of miniature vessels, men, and martians for use with various Space: 1889 games.

This is basically an historical circa 1889 naval miniatures wargame, with extra rules to include the flying conveyances* of the Space: 1889 setting. While this is a true tabletop game where Sky Galleons uses hexes, designs from the one can be used in the other.

At the end of the book is a listing of all larger and most smaller historical warships in service in 1889.

* Yeah, I could have said "vessels" or "craft" but "conveyances" sounds steampunkier!

Again, a basically historical game - this time covering land combat - with additions for the SF elements of Space: 1889. With a 1:10 miniatures to men ratio, the rules are best suited to fairly small actions, such typical of colonial warfare - in Afghanistan or in Syrtis Major.

A boardgame about a band of intrepid adventurers who sneak into a lair of bestial Martians to rescue slaves and "acquire" artefacts.

This is a module for playing Warp Empires in the Space: 1889 setting. Warp Empires, in turn, is a "[g]eneric rule set for a series of empire building/conquest games." Unfortunately the BGG entry is rather thin on further information.
