Inserts! When done right they are awesome. Case in point for me is Mall of Horror which has a place for everything, recesses the board down nicely and when you open the box looks rather impressive. Tip the box any which way and the components stay perfectly in place. A well designed insert.

When done wrong however they are a pain. BIG Time. So here's a few games that I've thrown out the inserts for and why specifically for each game.

Obviously the first choice here. This insert was simply put useless. Yes you could indeed close the box with everything inside. Given that you spent 5 mins. carefully placing the rockets one by one so they fit just perfect...sigh. Not thanks. Here's what mine looks like on the inside.

Speaking of Bruno games here's one. I actually liked the little insert in this one it looked neat. It was small and yes I did put the plastic bits under it but still I could not get the box to close nicely until I pulled out the insert. Then it closed perfectly.

We all know Days of Wonder makes great insert for their base games. But we also all know that DoW expands their games. I like to compile the games but with the insert it get's a bit...difficult. My TTR contains the full components of the base game as well as the 1910 and Swiss expansions in full. One box and it's all there.

Another prime example, this time my M'44 contains the full base game, Terrain Pack, Pacific Theater, Eastern Front and a second board all in the one box.

Everything had a place alright but tip the box in any direction and the bits were literally everywhere. Not to mention it took too much time (IMO) to put all the tiles in their places then make stacks. My tiles are all in my draw bag now. The other bag has the start fountain and all the player markers. Now its nice and quick to open setup and pack up when done.

Here's a funny one. Tuck boxes suck though. Sure they are probably cheap for the publishers but they don't last especially if you play the game to any real extent. So several of my games in tuck boxes have made it to the deck box conversion. Let's Kill did and I hope to get an expansion for that so it'd need it. Fluxx has added a few too many cards and hell Looney Labs made their own extra box for that one but I'm cheap and went with a deck box. Girl Genius is in a deck box as well.

I'm throwing out this insert tonight. Sure it's great in that it separates all the different kinds of cards, but the game requires so much shuffling that it begs for card sleeves - which won't fit in the insert. So now I can bag the base set in 4 baggies and still have a short set-up time, without the insert.

This had just about the most useless insert I've ever seen. A couple of too-large places for the cards to slide around in, the pieces would bounce around the box all caddywumpus. I'm usually pretty anal about keeping of the stuff that comes with my games, but the inserts for Pandemic and Red November had to go.

Ridiculous cardboard insert that fills the entire box leaving just 1/3 in the centre as a channel in which to store a load of miniatures and cards. I found the only practical way to work this is to keep a lot of things under the insert and put the rest in the central channel.

This insert *barely* holds the waves, and if you don't bag the meeples, they get lost up inside of the insert. Unfortunately, the game is only slightly better than it's insert. Perhaps that should be it's own geeklist, games where the insert is better or worse than the game?
