I'm not talking about games you accidentally sold or traded away and forgot to get back. I'm talking about games so gosh-darn awful you had to get rid of them. Even just having the game in your collection cheapens your other games. Especially that mint, still-in-the-shrink-wrap copy of Vimpleberry Dancing Elf Party (or whatever).

Here are the games I deigned to purchase, then had to get rid of so no one would associate them with me any more!!

I certainly feel taken for my $$. As a game collector, I was fascinated by the shiny colors. As a game designer, I was taken in by the time travel theme. As both a game collector and game designer, I am appalled by the game.

IT'S ONLY VALUE to a game enthusiast is to see an example of horribly written rules and virtually unplayable mechanics.

Oooh! Shiny big box. Samurai theme. Am I in love? Nope. I'm in pain. A beautiful concept and great production quality couldn't salvage this game. The 1d10 randomness of your actions immediately gives this game to luck. If you roll 1s or 2s on back-to-back turns while an opponent is rolling 8s and 9s, you are hosed. And the mechanics are just too clunky.

I love Civil War games. I've tried my share of clunkers, but this one was terrible. I so desperately wanted to like this game. But the myriad counters are a nightmare to keep separate -- especially when some counters are printed on the front and back WITH DIFFERENT UNITS YOU NEED IN PLAY AT THE SAME TIME. The rules are generic mechanics for use in several Avalanche games, making it difficult to determine how a particular rule applies to your Cavalry brigade when the example is talking about Roman Chariots or a contingent of Elephants crossing the mountains. With so many superior Civil War games out there, this is not an option.

This gets the boot. But then a Confederate soldier sneaks in late at night after the shooting's all done to steal the boot.

This game is a real shame. It has great production quality -- solid components, fairly clear rules, nice board and pieces, and even a CD tutorial of how to play. Too bad the game itself is listless and uninspired. The original rules needed a severe overhaul (originally, the Elves were over-powered by several orders of magnitude).

Even with 'house rule' tweaking and revisions, we found it cumbersome. And repetitive. There seemed to be little actual decision-making, as you seemed pre-destined to trudge along the same paths or be hopelessly beaten. It was a clever idea. The nifty pieces and nice packaging fooled me -- I put my money down. Unfortunately, the game is not worth the price.

I've never seen my players complain and whine so much as when we played Vox Populi. Despite what I thought were fairly clear and straightforward rules, and some interesting mechanics/decisions, I was unanimously outvoted by my gaming group. They refused to play this ever, ever, ever again. With that sort of ringing endorsement, I scrapped this poor game for my group's sake.

Heck, we played this thing ragged when it first game out. Then it slowly dawned on us -- this is a computer game without the computer doing all the book-keeping or busywork! If ever a game was designed to be made into a computer strategy game, this was it. With us as the computer processors, though, the game took forever to play and manage.

I'll also have nightmares until I die about one player who could never grasp that you never actually HAD SHIPS on the board -- just a representation of your shipping/naval capabilities...

"Where are the ships, Jay?"
"Hey Jay, where do I put my ships?"
"So where are all the ships, huh?"

Not a bad game, mechanically, but Relationship Tightrope has one of the WORST themes I've ever seen. The only reason I bought it was because I liked Drahtseilakt, but not only could I not get my wife to play the game (thank goodness; she probably would have been insulted!), but I also couldn't get my gaming group to get past the theme to even play the game!

Luckily, I found a copy of the German edition, and scooped it up. I then promptly sold off the US edition of the game!

I wanted to like this game. Lavish production, combined with a great theme and cooperative gameplay, made me think that I was going to LOVE this game. I even asked for it for Christmas! It lingered on the shelf for a while before I finally had the chance to play it, and I was so hyped up about it.

Needless to say, I was disappointed. I felt like the game was playing US, and that the cooperative element was the only actual point where we made any significant decisions whatsoever; everything else was randomly decided. The game was also being "officiated" by the most experienced player, who not only walked us through each step of the game (thankfully, I should add), but he also made recommendations on what we all should do each turn. We never shared card information, but the advising took what little interaction there was right out of the game.

After that experience, I asked some of my gaming buddies if the experience was unique to our game, or if they all played out that way, and they told me that, in their experience, it was always the latter. I put the base game and the Friends & Foes expansion up for auction on eBay and more than made my money back on them.

Saw this game back before I was a big boardgamer, in the mid-80's. I was impressed by the seeming complexity, and the nifty theme.

Then I opened the box.

The rules were pretty cool. Certainly worth of a couple of plays, even now... too bad it was impossible. The "screen" pieces didn't physically fit into the board. The "hidden value" samurai pieces were so warped that it was easy to tell which was which. The dice were... two dice. So what did I keep?

The rules. And two dice. Someday, I hope to play the game using the original rules and my own board and pieces.

The moment I opened the box I knew I'd been thoroughly ripped off. The box was about 5 times larger than the contents required; it was a blantant case of trying to make less look like more. I've never seen cheaper components, either. I'll never buy another game from this company. This thing should be the "hubcap of shame" for the KotD; it went up on eBay and hopefully found a happier home.

Needless to say, we told him again he HAD to get rid of it, but NOT to us!!!
A game that appears to be a race game, but is not a race game, where you move little inventions of cars or future cars or whatever, and never get beyond the first turn, and can't seem to gather up enough interest to even care...

I was looking forward to hidden agendas, secret negotiations, and covert mail deliveries by night.
