Some people love dice; some people hate'em. For those of us who aren't dice-lovers (but who are open to persuasion regarding specific games), which recent dice games would you recommend and why? Which do you think are over-hyped and not all that?

I'm not quite sure how to define dice games -- so I'll lead by example with the first few entries. And I'll mention that I didn't include games like Stone Age, Kingsburg, Shanghaien, or Roma, which use dice in crucial (and, to my mind, very effective ways), but that don't, in the end, seem like "dice games" to me. YMMV.

First thing I noticed was that the production values on these specialty dice should be higher. I had to color some of mine in.

How does this compare to Stone Age? While I don't think of myself as that into bits, I'll have to admit that checking off little boxes feels a lot less satisfying that collecting tiles and moving meeples around. But maybe portability and speed put Roll Through the Ages in a different niche.

What's your take?

We weren't Pickomino fans, but so far (2 plays), we've enjoyed Sushi Bar (we have the French edition). I think maybe, for me, the best dice game is a quick dice game. Pickomino dragged. And the scoring here is more interesting -- you must embrace pain to experience pleasure.

This one was a pleasant surprise to me. I'm not a big fan of Risk and my daughter dreads it, but sometimes it seems to be the only game certain boys her age (11) are willing to play. So I found a universally-acceptable alternative. I love the packaging/dice bowl too.

Can't Stop is the only dice game in my collection. I love it for its speed, simplicity and for its push your luck element. Many's the time I have muttered "can't stop, can't stop" through gritted teeth as I've picked up the dice just once more. Haven't played Exxtra so can't compare the two. Wish I had the board in the image rather than the Franjos edition monochrome vinyl mat.

For some reason, the Yahtzee style of dice game (roll five dice, pick up some and re-roll them up to three times) has never appealed. Though I have to admit that the more advanced things that Roll Through The Ages and To Court The King do with these mechanics does raise my interest a bit.

This has some familiar objects as Yahtzee (get four of a kind, or a full house), but the targets keep getting bigger (5 of a kind, 6 of a kind), and you have to make decisions about which cards to purchase, and when to use them. I think if you have friends and family who are familiar with, and enjoy, Yahtzee, this is an interesting bridge to other games. It's enjoyable for us as well, and given that it plays 5 and takes up so little room in a game bag, makes it possible filler/lighter game at game night.

We enjoy Doubles Wild because it moves quickly, and has light-hearted conflict and confrontation. There's a little strategy, but not much, and we can talk and joke while we play. We have a nice wooden version with glass marbles and metal pegs, which is more satisfying to play with than the plastic token version.

Our copy of Can't Stop, which I received in a trade, should be arriving today, so I'm looking forward to playing it with LD (I played Can't Stop at game night, be he hasn't played it yet).

I'm not sure about this entry, so I figured I'd toss it on the table for discussion. When I play this, there's usually lots of dice rolling, and a high fun factor - it almost has the feel of a press-your-luck game. There's some decision making, to be sure, but dice-rolling is a big part of the game (and in the more "traditional" way, and not like Stone Age or Roma), and makes it a great deal of fun. Does it belong on this list? I think so, but perhaps others might disagree.

This is easily my favorite dice game. While it's true this could be more accurately called a bluff game, the luck of the dice can wield a heavy hand.

This is PnP dice game. You print out and label up the dice faces. You'll also need to print the board, but its all just black and white. All of the dice are themed DUNE dice. It's free, a fun light game, best with three players.

This free print-and-play is a dice game (duh) that uses regular or homemade dice (all the files are included). The theme is World War II, and the dice determine if you recruit soldiers or specialists, buy items or find courage. It's my game, so be warned, I might actually be biased.

I'm going to shamelessly recommend my own game, Shake Out!

What's fun about Shake Out! is that the dice you roll define which cards you can claim, but it's the cards that score. The set collection adds another layer and the ability to bump other players' dice creates opportunities to be adversarial.

It's a fun filler and a great way to get non-gamers to the table.

You can check it out here: http://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/shake-out-
