Attandance was around 30 players, or, in other words: nobody had to sit on a ladder. These were some of the games played during 2009 May BOGA-night:

"Come in and join the fun on the second Friday of each month! Come join the rest of the Boardgamers of Great Akron (BOGA) for a fine evening in boardgames! Bring your favorite games to play and we also have a large selection of demo games for you to try!

Inspired by CABS in Columbus, Underhill's Games in Cuyahoga Falls has graciously agreed to host for us on the 2nd Friday of every month from 6pm - 2am (or later if still going strong at that time).

The store is big with plenty of open gaming space and has snacks and drinks available. Plus there's a Donatos right across the street and McDonalds next door if snacking just won't cut it. The store also has a large selection of demo copies of games that we can play. There's no entry fee. So just mark your calendar and let's all meet and play together!

What to bring:
Nothing is required, but you may want to bring your favorite games and a little cash for some food and drinks.

Visit Underhillsgames.com for directions. Tell all your friends! See you there."

Please add games you played and comment as you wish! Thank you.

For this months BOGA meeting, I was returning from a weeklong business trip in Minneapolis. My flight arrived around 4:30pm at Cleveland Hopkins and I immediately started my drive down to C-Falls. When I arrived around 5:30pm, Officer Mike was already sitting in the store and reading the rules for 'A Castle for all Seasons'.

I immediately suggested to play a game of Combat Commander: Europe to get things started. Please read this highly enjoyable session report from Officer Mike that he had already posted here:

Mike Miller and I played the Combat Commander scenario: Hold the Line, that is unique as it has a imoblilized sherman Tank with it's 75mm gun, and 50cal MG. The Americans also get to use a couple of captured panzerfausts. The germans get SS squads with a heavy MG42. I played tha Americans.

Mike sent his germans straight for the hill. I set up my americans on the reverse slope. As the Germand crested the hill, I opened up with good effect. At one point, all the Germans had broken, but I was unable to take any advantage of it.

I did received reinforcements of a heavy machingun and another '2' leader, but it turned out not to be enough. We fought for that hill and it went back and forth throughout the game. It was always very close.

A Sudden Death ending was fast approaching. Mike's germans were winning by a small margin, and Mike was burning through cards. I had an Ambush card, an Advance card and I had to retake that hill if I was going to win.

I entered melee with a squad, a team, and a leader, against one lone German SS squad. It turned out Mike had two Ambush cards! He also still held the Initiative card. I played my Ambush card and still had the advantage, 8 - 4. Mike pulled a 9, and then I pulled a 5, to make both our scores 13, and everyone on that hill was KIA! Mike kept control of the hill as the game ended immediately after. Yet another Combat Commander 'photo finish!'

The scenario ended in a sudden death victory for the Germans in Turn 7 (+8VP). WOW! What a fight for the ridge! It all came down to the last turn and a final melee!

After we had finished CC:E, Brendan and Craig were already deeply engrossed in a game of 'Arkham Horror'. Chris and Eric had already played a game of 'A Castle for all Seasons' this night, but they were still willing to teach Officer Mike and me.

At first, I did not understand the rules very well, but this quickly changed by just playing the game. This is not unusual, as I typically fall within the 'learning by playing' category. I really enjoyed the game. The main advantage is that it plays very quick and the downtime is quite minimal.

At the end, Eric managed to put us all to shame by winning with 60+ points.

As Eric and Officer Mike had to take off, Chris and I decided to look for other players and a new game. We wanted to play something that everybody enjoyed and already knew the rules as we were not in the mood to teach rules again. We quickly agreed upon 'Tigris & Euphrates', one of my all-time favourites (which unfortunately does not get played too much).

I managed to profit from Chris and Philip going at each other early in the game and letting me build my empire unharmed in one corner of the board. Maybe this is one of the week spots of playing T&E with 3 players only, but usually 2 players will focus on each other and therby let the remaining player win.

In the end, I won by 11VP vs. 7VP vs. 7VP.

After winning in T&E, I was in a good mood and willing to teach a new game. Everyone was very interested in 'Race for the Galaxy' and 'Amun Re'. As Shawn and John joined us, 'Amun Re' made the cut.

This is another great area-control game from Rainer Knizia that I enjoy very much. There are several things to look out for and it always comes down to clever bidding and not overpaying for action cards, loveslaves and chiclets!

In the end, the gods had pity with me and humbled me with a final victory.

BTW: If you like a good laugh, I strongly recommend reading this Amun-Re session report from Gola-hap-shet. This is the BEST session report here on the Geek.
