It was last year at DragonCon that I truly stepped on the road to board gaming. (See my geeklist for details: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...) This year, I went back to DragonCon a gamer.

I don't know how much gaming I'll get to do, but I mostly hope to try out some new games. This may be my last DCon for a while, since I went to Origins earlier this year and got a taste of a full gaming convention, so next year I am going to try out GenCon.

I am going to DragonCon with my girlfriend, Terri, and a friend named Nathan. Terri, is being a Looney Labs Demo Rabbit, and is otherwise mostly doing her own thing and unavailable for gaming. (I don't care what you heard, she is *not* a werewolf!) Fortunately, Nathan, who always seemed to be gaming just to play along, has bought a couple games of his own, and we got to try them. Maybe I underestimated his interest in games.

P.S. I originally did this as a journal entry, but it ended up being so game oriented, that I decided that it was better as a list. I'll just add my non-game related notes as list comments.

Day 1 (Friday, New Purchase): Terri and I have been playing Lost Cities online and on our Palms for a while. It was about time we actually bought it for ourselves, and the Atlas Games buy 2 get one free sale was the perfect chance. Terri and I played a quick game of this while we were waiting for something or another.

Day 1 (Friday): Finally got to try some Formula De, which was good. A racing board game works better than I had expected, and the "gear changes" with the die is a very good mechanic. It turned out that it was a tournament game, and we didn't even know. My friend won decisively, but we were late additions to the game, so he wasn't part of the tournament. I'm surprised that they were willing to allow latecomers into a tournament game at all, but it was cool and nice of them.

Day 1 (Friday): Also played a 2 player tile laying game called Landlock from Gamewright that I had never heard of. One player is water, and the other is Earth, and you try to connect the corners as the primary scoring mechanism. Cute, but not going to make it on my wish list.

Day 2 (Saturday): My friend bought Plunder by Laughing Pan Productions. It was actually released here at DragonCon. The first thing that struck me about the game was the cool treasure chest box. It's a very nice looking package. Unfortunately, this is a very small company, and the rest of the components show it. The art is decent and in color, but it's mostly landscape and water graphics. The card stock is thin, and it makes the small counters hard to pick up off the table. The rules fit on both sides of a fold-out piece of paper, and the print is medium to small, so it took a little while to go over them. Each player gets their own home sheet. Your sheet has areas for your ship, your first mate, a captured prize ship, flags to mark friend and enemy nations, and areas for plunder, gold, and trade. You lay down cards (like tiles) for your map. Your ships start in a neutral pirate port that is surrounded by open water. As you move your ship you draw cards, and lay down cards as you scout. The map can have open water cards, ports that you can trade with, and coastal areas for native trading (cheap goods) and special treasure map cards. You can attack ships for plunder (which, of course, makes enemies), play encounter cards, start wars or peace, and if you opponent forgets to pay their crew, you can shout Mutiny! and get them thrown overboard! It's a cool game. The rules are, unfortunately, quite fiddley, but I enjoyed the game alot.

I also watched Nathan play some of the Commodore version of Plunder. It will be a free, downloadable expansion to the game that adds support for fleets of ships and up to 6 players. I didn't see enough if this variant to say much more than that, but Nathan won his game and won a nifty Pirate hat.

Day 2 (Saturday): He also bought Cthulhu 500 from Atlas Games. I'm not surprised, he's a little bit of a Mythos nut, and is getting lots of complements for his "Hello Cthulhu" and "Sponge Bob, Cthulhu Pants" t-shirts. The game is a pretty good chaotic racing game. Each car is put in a line, and players try to pass each other. If you pass from front to back, you get a lap counter, and the most laps at the end of the game win. There are lots of funny cards, like "The Mudflaps That Man Was Not Meant to Ogle", and you can have a driver and pit crew to give you bonuses. It's very much like a Lovecraft themed racing Munchkin, and if you like games of that type, and are interested in the theme, then it's a no-brainer. I am not really a racing fan, but I sure seem to be playing alot of racing games.

Day 2 (Saturday, New Purchase): DragonCon has the Origin's gaming library, so games are available to borrow. I have been wanting to try out Starfarers of Catan, because I like Catan, and the retro bits look great, but I'm not plopping $60 + $30 (5-6 player expansion) for the game without playing it. Unfortunately, it isn't in the gaming library. Instead we picked out the 2 player Starship Catan. What a nice surprise that was. The setup and tutorial bordered on painful (You do the normal setup, and then the tutorial tells you to re-do half of it), but the game was great. A definite candidate for the buy 2 get 1 free sale at Atlas.

Day 3 (Sunday): I had already played Attika a couple times on BSW, but never in real life. I have been really hesitant about this game because of so many negative comments on BGG. Some of the comments, such as the complaints about luck, are easy to discount, but the comments by people who just lost interest are more troubling. This game was completely new to my friend, and it would be good to have a second opinion that was unbiased by the comments on BGG. The game reaffirmed my interest in the game, and Nathan enjoyed it as well.

Day 3 (Sunday): I looked at the box for Scream Machine at Origins because Terri has a thing for Roller Coasters, but I didn't see it being played. I looked into reviews of the game, and it sounded like a silly, light game, and those are a dime-a-dozen. I had a chance to actually play it at DragonCon, and liked it. There is a cheapskate mechanic that rewards concentrating on a small number of collections, rather than trying to get everything possible.

Day 3 (Sunday): My friend and I were wandering the game room at about 12:30am. I saw a game of Settlers starting, and decided I was too tired to learn a new game, so Catan would be a great way to end the day. I ended up with all my resources in one basket, and had a setup that gave me six cards every time a 9 was rolled. This could have been a recipe for disaster, but I got lucky and it paid off. The poor guy to my left was in a similar situation, except he rolled a 7 on what seemed like half of his turns. It was a terrible thing to behold.

Day 4 (Monday): The last day of the con was the lightest of them all. I pretty much gave up on trying new games, and just played any game that came my way. I walked up to a couple, and another gamer who were just setting up a game of Ticket to Ride. I needed a little reminder of the rules, since I have only played a couple times, but it is a simple game (the rules anyway), so it only took a second. It was fun, but I still play too conservatively. I didn't try for enough long routes, and therefore didn't get the good scores. I had been warned that the woman was good at the game, and the warning was right. She managed to connect a route from halfway up the east cost, all the way around the edges of Florida, and along the bottom of the country. She had won the game prior to getting the longest track bonus. I wish I had payed more attention to what she was doing, because I might have learned something.

Terri invited me to play, but I only played a single round, and got knocked out early.

Day 4 (Monday): I picked up three stacks of Icehouse pieces the previous year, but was disappointed that only a few games can be played without four sets. Some other friends got some too, but we never got them in the same place enough to do anything with them. Since Terri was doing the Demo Rabbit thing, I got to play Volcano with her. I liked the game, and hope to try again, but in general I tire of abstract games quickly. Fortunately, I have more sets now, and there are plenty of games to try, so I think Icehouse will still get pulled out from time to time.
