I was playing a game with a friend the other day when I realized that the tedium of unpacking, setting up, breaking down, and repacking was rather redundant rather.

So I set it up before putting it back in the box and put a piece of paper in there reading, "Ready to go."

What games do you think would be better off setting up as you put them back in the box?

The game that started the idea. With all the phased sections in each deck, it just made sense to set up each one as I was putting it back in the box.

Lot of bits in this one....

Before putting the game away I always re-sort the cards by board. I also have the Friends and Foes stuff similarly sorted so I can add them in quickly if needed.

For PR I always put it away ready to play as a three player game (our most common denomination). The victory point chips, colonists, ships etc. are all measured for that. Makes setting up a snap.

This game almost requires having various things sorted out in a good counter tray. In my 20 space tray:
- Each of the 14 alien cultures and their goods gets their own space.
- The IOU's get 1.
- The factory/sport markers are group 3/space.
- Deeds get their own space.
- Red/Yellow/Combined Drives and Shields
- Lasers and Nova get the last spot

Three things get their own baggie: Bonus Chits which are always poured in the cup, ? markers which are set up at the start, Rastur which I never use.

When the game ends, the easiest to cleanup is put the goods back on the board where they were in the game--then count each one and put them back in the tray.

it would have been even better if they had given you a tray insert to sort the building tiles instead of a playmat.

The most tedious aspect of this game is setting up the cards for the draw deck. You could easily cut down on the setup time by putting the deck back together before putting the game back on the shelf. Of course, this is assuming you know how many players will be playing the next time, as the deck is built differently for four than it is for two or three.

But if you did this, setup would only require the passing out of four-card hands to each player. Done and done. Time to get gaming!

We pull out the start worlds after each game, including the last game of the night. It's always ready to go in the box.

I've separated the less interesting monsters in a ziplock bag, so that we don't have to go through the deck every time we're about to play. I don't play this often enough to get sick of the 8 monsters we always play with (who would put the Demon in the game instead of the Troll?)

While you're putting the game away, shuffle/mix the tokens before putting them in their compartments. You've got most of them out anyway, and then the game is all ready to go for next time.

Shuffle every lousy cotton-pickin freakin' monkey-lovin' deck of cards before you put this game away. Don't think about. Just do it. It'll easily shave a half hour off your next set up time. How important is a half hour to you?

Ideally, the best scenario would be just to leave the game out. Since it requires an entire room to play with all of the expansions anyway, you might as well just dedicate a room as the Arkham Room and not worry about the take-down at all.

No matter which expansions I add to the game to play with, I always separate them back out at the end of each game.

I used to keep I&C and T&B in the main box but one time when I wanted to introduce the game to some new players, it took me forever to sort out the expansions and I lost them

The handy race token holder helps immensely with setup/teardown.

It is also handy to randomize the race/power banners when returning them to the box. Remove and play.

I always pull out 5 of the Master Builder cards, and put them reversed on the bottom of the Power Cards deck, along with the 5 "-3" cards.

I always place all the hotel tiles onto the board after a game is done in order to inventory them and make sure I still have them all. With most of them already in place as a result of playing, adding the remaining ones doesn't take very long. It's a great way to ensure that I don't lose any of these now irreplaceable bits.

This game has a lot of little tiles that must be sorted into seven columns before the game can start. My wife and I took the time to get little zip lock baggies and presort them so the setup won't take as long the next time we play.

I'm not very obsessive (as anyone can testify who's seen the state of my Settler box), but in Princes of Florence I do find it saves a lot of trouble to have 2 large bags and separate all the "auction" items into one and all the "action" items into the other. Then it's easy to place them as the rule book suggests, separated so it's easy to see which items can be bid on/bought during each phase. This saves time on setup and on putting away.

Note 1: I do put the freedoms into a separate little bag, since they the number of freedoms you put out depends on the number of players.

Note 2: I turn the insert upside down to more easily accommodate the bagged components. Throwing it out would would be an even better idea. Once I do, I'll feel entitled to that I throw out useless box inserts microbadge I've been hankering for...
