Most Americans grill out on Memorial Day with family and friends. If you got a chance to do some gaming, list what you played here.

We had my cousin and some friends over for lunch. I grilled hamburgers. After lunch we decided to play a couple of games. We started off with Bohnanza. 3 of us had played before while the other 3 were newbies. We played a couple of practice rounds then started the game. Everyone seemed to catch on pretty quickly. I won a close victory, but was accused of manipulating my cousin to get unbalanced trades.

After our company left, my wife and I played one of my favorite 2 player games, Attika. My wife seldom (never) wins this game, but today she played in a more aggressive manner. She took control of the board and I felt that I was always reacting to her play. She placed a tile to get around my flank, and then constructed 3 buildings for a convincing win.

I also played two games of this -- a beginner's game with 5 and an experienced game with 4 players. I always seem to make dumb moves in my first game, and this first one was no exception. The second game ended because one player was leaving and everyone else wanted to try other games that were just starting at other tables, though I was tied for the lead at the point we abandoned it.

I also played another game, but I can't remember the name of it. It wasn't memorable any way. It was a stock trading game with dice and a American-style pawn track around the outside of the board. The stock values didn't waiver much, and there were very few dividend payouts.

She ended up as the flag-holder of Germany, so she ended up getting crushed. I won with a well planned owning of England and Russia.

On Friday we played our annual game of 18C2C at Kublacon; Daniel, Rich, Aliza and me. The PRR and MoPac pushed by C&O and Wabash away from Chicago with annoying station placements, but resulted, quite by accidently, in my running the Wabash and the C&O perfectly together, getting all the right tokens and track laid so that they destinated beautifully with a little help from the freshly started Norfolk & Northwestern) after they both had merged and were both full of good trains. Something like a $79/share dividend? I quickly followed that by merging the Gulf Mobile & Ohio, and destinating it twice after they'd merged and were also full of good trains and beautifully placed stations for another killer dividend, twice.

We called the game as the 8-trains came out. General consensus was that I was running away with the game. If so, that was the first time I'd done really well at 18C2C. We started mid-afternoon, perhaps 15:00 and called the game at roughly 02:00 in the morning.

A sleepy headed Saturday started with several plays of one of my prototypes, Corner Lot. It was well received and generally admired. By Sunday it had placed in the final three in the Kublacon design competition and was described as decision-rich, Kiznia-like, and eminently publishable 45-minute mega-super filler.

I also squeezed in a game of Rick Holzgraf's Hammer & Spike prototype. Hammer & Spike is a fine upper middleweight game. It is very tactical and very opportunistic with little opportunity for forward planning or any significant strategic elements, and is thus really not to my taste, but the ideas are good and the base design is sound. Most importantly he has found the game he's looking for and is not still fumbling about. That said I think it still needs significant work. I'm not convinced that the switchyards in their current form serve serve enough of a useful function, and the game lacks both a good arc and dramatic moments ("bombs"). I've some ideas in the area I'll be talking over with Rick. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

That evening we played a six player/5 handed game of 18Mex with Andy, Andrew, Aliza, Daniel and Eric and me (Daniel and Erik jointly played their position). I'm now fairly well convinced that 5 players is just too many for 18Mex. I ended up over-investing in privates, getting the NdM and something else, and ended up playing a pure portfolio game until the NdM finally floated. Sadly the train rush didn't but rather bumbled clumsily with a huge pause before Phase 3.5 -- too long for all sanity and with me without a company and nothing I could do about it without a huge opportunity cost in the shares I'd have to sell. Ultimately I won the game by a ~$300, despite the fact that we utterly forgot to capitalise the NdM with its $900 treasury once it had floated!

By Sunday I was reeling from the lack of sleep and physical exhaustion from Friday's 11 hour game of 18C2C (Coast to Coast) and Saturday's p10:00 get-to-bed time. Non compis mentis. We played several more games of Corner Lot, (I'm fairly sure far more than I logged), a 4 player game of Muck And Brass with Daniel, Aliza and Tom (went moderately well, but was failed by our short tempers and reeling exhaustion) and a few hands of Njet!. Somewhere, in here, I think it was Sunday, we played a 4 handed game of Metropolys. I was quite literally reeling from lack of sleep and other physical deprivations. I normally do well at Metropolys and have an 80%+ win-rante. Not that night! I came dead last and not by a small margin.

I popped back up to Kublacon to see how Corner Lot did in their design competition. It turned out to have done very well, ranking in the top 3 and losing out only to the markedly brilliant and clever "Kiva" (a combinatorial game involving mirrors, reflections and 5-in-a-rows).

After the competition I played Corner Lot with the competition organiser (Julie?) and got some more commentary on the design and its presentation. Julie suggested that Corner Lot was probably too intense, mathy and un-obvious for significant market success, at least with the publishers she dealt with directly. I'm afraid I was a little amused by this, as all her complaints were about attributes of the game that I'd very deliberately accentuated in the design as they're things I like and enjoy. Still good comments and I appreciate her feedback.

I then drove down to SB-Boardgamers. I'd promised to meet Ray there to teach him the 18xx but was very late due to the design competition and Corner Lot game at Kublacon. Happily he'd been enjoying Lexio & Tichu while awaiting me so there was no loss.

We played a 3 player teaching game of 1889 with Aliza. Ray played a competent game despite Aliza's and my constant illuminating (ie confusing) analysis of Ray's position, his possible choices and their implications. We called the game as Ray's wife was getting cold and needed to go home. I think I was winning with ~$200+/OR getter dividends than Aliza, but Aliza's shares were a bit better than mine. It was close, and hopefully we have another 18xx convert.

Two quick games of Paratroop Drop, with each of us alternating sides (American paratroopers v German defenders). I was able to win both games, first as the German defender by breaking the American squad, and second as the American paratrooper by achieving the victory conditions. A classic favorite of mine.
