Popular culture often portrays events in the future. However, time marches on and those "futures" quickly become the past.

This GeekList was inspired by my re-watching of The Terminator yesterday and realizing that the movie is now 25 years old (and I'm 25 years older than when I first saw it)

The Omega Man

One of the first movies I can remember seeing in the theater. It came out in 1971 and portrayed events far ahead in 1977.

1984

This book, written by George Orwell and published in 1949, became famous with its portrayal of a totalitarian regime infiltrating all facets of everyday life.

Read the book in high school and also remember many articles about its "accuracy" when 1984 actually came around.

Third World War: August 1985

This 1979 book, by General Sir John Hackett, predicted a clash between the NATO nations and the Soviet Union.

I was in the military in August 1985 and remember this getting a bit of renewed coverage then.

Escape from New York

John Carpenter's movie portraying the year 1997 where the entire island of Manhattan is a maximum security prison. Starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken.

I thought he was dead.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

This 1991 film tells us that Skynet goes active on August 29th, 1997 at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time.

Hey, that was almost 12 years ago. I seem to recall letting the guys I gamed with at the time know that week that we were in for some trouble - once a geek always a geek.

Death Race 2000

This 1975 film set in 2000 (duh!) featured David Carradine running over pedestrians for points.

Hmm, doing damage with vehicles. I should probably get a microbadge related to that.

In the 1968 film, HAL, the computer, plays chess with Dave, the human.

I have actually never seen this film in its entirety - but I know the catchy music!

FYI: HAL = IBM minus one letter.

This seems to be the next "big year" that soon will be history. Oddly enough, two of the movies set in 2012, "I am Legend" and "Death Race", are related to previous items on this list.

Of course, this all supposes that we are still here following the end of the Mayan calendar (and the alien invasion).

"Party like it's 1999"

I remember when this came out, I was in High School and thinking "Man, when 1999 rolls around, I'll probably be so old that I won't even be up at midnight to celebrate." My age December 31, 1999? 32.

I must confess though that the party I attended was quite tame, and we probably left shortly after midnight to put our kids to bed.

Back to the Future II featured a 2015 with hoverboards, flying cars, self adjusting and drying clothing, self tying shoes. video games where you don't use your hands, the Scenery Channel, $50 Pepsis, food hydrators that make pizza in seconds, cool kids wearing their pants inside out, and the Cubs making (but, of course, losing) the World Series.

It hasn't reached the magic date yet, but do any of these seem like they'll be around in 6 years?

The Tom Clancy novel that inspired this TSR naval wargame was a huge best-seller, and made into a popular movie. Ironically, the Cold War thriller was published just before the Soviet Union disintegrated into the Dustbin of History.

Clancy made a fortune on this book and subsequent Cold War and military thrillers.

I just started rewatching The Postman again last night (which, despite reviews to the contrary, I think is a very good post-apocalyptic movie) and noticed that the movie takes place in 2013.
