I recently discovered that the Incan Gold entry has been separated from the Diamant one. For me, as a gamer and a game author, this makes no sense at all. It's like having different entries for Chess with wooden pieces and Chess with ivory pieces - where would I go to just discuss Chess ? It's like considering that an Oxford's Classic edition of Hamlet and a Penguin one were different books and that anything told about one would not be relevant about the other.

As a game database, the Boardgamegeek was a wonderful place for me, both as a gamer and as a game author. As a game editions database, it may become a more convenient place to keep track of your collection, to sell, trade or buy games, but it becomes totally useless when it comes to discussing games or looking for infos about a game, which has always been my main use of the geek and, I think, the main use of most people here.

Also, at this moment, there is a great inconsistency. The rules and cards difference bvetween the different edition of Citadels, or Valley of the Mammoths, are much more important than the differences between Diamant and INcan Gold, and noone ever suggested - or so I hope - to split these entries.

So, I'd like to make a list of some of the most obvious senseless splits, of situations where what is obviously the same game has been divided in several entries, making it difficult to discuss the game as a whole.

There are bordercase situations, like Carcassonne / Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers, or Steam / Age of Steam, which are mostly the same, but with some important differences. There are also new editions with major differences in rules, like with Cosmic Encounter. I would prefer to have them merged, but I can see the point in splitting them. But there are also many cases, like Diamant / Incan Gold, where I can't see the point and where what is obviously one single game has been splitted in different entries, making it really hard to track the discussions and comments about the game.

Please add any other such cases you can find.

Its the same game, with the same ruleset (and also an easier variant ruleset). The only difference is how the tiles are laid out...and that expansions for Settlers don't work with Simply Catan. Still, I don't think it deserves its own entry.

This is quite auto-explainatory: a different entry for each deck?

Formula Dé+Formula D are virtually identical and it would be handy to have all the files and forums together.

...and a separate entry for each expansion track is a little unwieldy.

Another of my games, but I don't look at its entry very often.

A funny point is that entries are made as if the french Tempête sur l'échiquier was the same as Knightmare Chess, and Tempête 2 the same as Knightmare Chess 2, which is absolutely not the case - there are several cards of Tempête 1 in Knightmare 2, of Tempête 2 in Knightmare 1, of Knightmare 1 in Tempete 2, and of Knightmare 2 in Tempête 1. And the German edition, Tschach, has another mix...

Why is there no Word Games Forum or Subdomain?

There should be a Word Games Subdomain, or at least a Word Games Forum!

Yes, Cosmic Encounter. The database is huge and cumbersome. I say merge as much as possible. Under each game, when it matters, there can be sections for different editions. In fact, that could even be a forum category, in addition to "General", "Rules", "Variants", "News", "Reviews", "Sessions", and whatever else, there can be a group for "Editions" where people can discuss differences/preferences/etc.

Are there different entries for Acquire? RoboRally? Concentration? Password? Uno?

Different entries for the different-skinned versions of Monopoly makes as much sense as a separate entries for a Staunton-design chess set and a Civil War chess set from the Franklin Mint.

Keep the same things together, and keep similar things close.

Create a new category for "Game System" which would include regular playing cards, Piece Pack, and Icehouse pyramids (and whatever else).

Does anyone advocate separate entries for the regular base Piece Pack and the version with the seasons, and the various versions with all the other symbols? There need to be standards, and the standards need to be applied consistantly.

And let there be a new category for "Expansions". Separate from individual Game entries. Stand-alone games can say "Boardgame:" as they do now, and expansions can say (guess what?) "Expansion:".
