Summertime in our hobby means two things. Boardgame conventions and boardgame awards. If you are a wargamer like myself that means the Charles S Roberts Awards. Named after the father of our wargaming hobby Charles Roberts they are currently award at the World Boardgaming Championships in Lancaster Pennsylvania to be held in August.

This is is not intended to be a comprehensive list of games eligible for nomination but simply a look at some of the possible nominees in the major categories. A complete list of eligible games can be found here.
http://www.grognard.com/info1/game08.html

A list of categories can be found here.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Charles_S._Roberts_aw...

Feel free to add any games to the list from those eligible.

In case you are wondering these are my predictions on the winners. These are not who I would vote for but who I think will win. Mind you some of them are indeed the ones I would vote for.

Best WW II Boardgame: The Devil's Cauldron
Best pre-WW II Boardgame: Unhappy King Charles
Best Modern Wargame: Fields of Fire
Best Graphics: Warriors of God

FAB has several advantages in it's favor for best WW II game. First it's on the Battle of the Bulge which is always popular with wargamers. Secondly as it came out so early in 2008 the game has had a longer period for folks to play it and be familiar with it than other likely nominees in this category. Combine that with it's innovative design.

Chance of nomination: Extremely good. Will be surprised if this one isn't nominated. While it faces stiff competition in the WW II category it has a shot at winning.

Combat Commander: Europe was nominated for 2006 losing out to MMP's Victory Lost. On the service you have to think it has a chance for at least a nomination. The game has been a smash hit for GMT with many fans of the Combat Commander series believing that it's even better than it's predecessor. The series has fast become a tent pole game for GMT.

On the flip side games that are part of a series rarely get nominated and win even less frequently.

Chance of nomination: Likely this one will get nominated simply due to the popularity of the series though a dark horse to win as series games rarely win. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see it win though simply because the Combat Commander series has such a strong following at this point that it might buck the trend.

This monster game is clearly MMP's best shot at the best WW II game category which it has won the past two years with Victory Lost and Case Blue. Designed by Adam Starkweather and featuring artwork by Mark Mahaffey, Nicolás Eskubi and Steve Paschal. The game has been getting raves from players.

Chance of Nomination: The Devil's Cauldron is a lock for nomination for best WW II game and has to be considered the favorite to win. Don't be surprised to see this one also get nominated and win for best graphics.

Seems a perfect match. Area impulse game of Stalingrad. Designed by Tetsuya Nakamura who designed Fire in the Sky.

Chances of Nomination: Maybe a 50-50 chance of nomination at best. While generally the game has been well received it hasn't gotten the buzz of some of the other WW II titles.

The game covers the Manchus of the 9th US Infantry (Keep up the Fire!) through World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Likely this one will be considered by most for Best Modern Era Boardgame. The game's design is extremely innovative and designed for solitaire play. Kind of a sentimental choice for me as my nephew is currently serving with the Manchus.

One unfortunate strike against Fields of Fire was there was a high number of counter problems with the game upon release. On the good side GMT has been extremely quick with providing errata counters for players.

Chance of Nomination: Should get a nomination for Best Modern Wargame with a strong shot getting Ben Hull his much deserved first CSR Award.

One thing this game has going for it is it's stunning graphics.
Mark Mahaffey could be nominated for 3 games in the best graphics category this year with this, The Devil's Cauldren and Blackbeard all getting nominations.

This game has been sort of a love it or hate it game for people. Some folks love the chaos while others don't and some folks have found the game a touch abstract.

Chance of Nomination: The pre-WW II category this year for the first time is actually stronger than the WW II category. In past years Warriors of God likely would have definitely earned a nomination but this year it's an extremely strong field. It should definitely however get nominated and would be my choice to win for best graphics as it's artwork is downright stunning.

Richard Berg revisits his classic pirate game. While some people thought the rules were a bit rough out of the box I thought the game was pretty good. Whatever quibbles there might have been the living rules have tightened things up extremely well.

Chance of nomination: While the game has been a big seller for GMT (It may have been their fastest sell out ever) it faces an uphill climb as many will consider it a remake plus it's a bit lighter fare than we normally see get nominated. Still any game that sells out as fast as this one did has to be considered a contender for at least a nomination. The game should get a nomination for best graphics for Mark Mahaffey's superb work.

This innovative game was a big hit for GMT after sitting on the P500 list for a long time. It's been extremely popular with over 1,000 owners here on BGG.

Chance of nomination: Almost a lock for nomination but might be considered to light of a game for many hardcore grognards to win. Definite dark horse.

Innovative in it's use of the CDG system and extremely well received. Will make you want to learn more about the history.

This one puzzles me. The game has great graphics (Mark Mahaffey again) and is very highly rated here on BGG. Yet there hasn't been as much buzz about it as you would expect.

Chance of nomination: Should get nominated for both best pre-WWII and graphics. Lack of online buzz on the game likely means it won't contend against UKC for the win however.

Looks great but unfortunately less filling. The game was suppose to be a lighter strategic American Civil War game. Problem was the rules were kind of convoluted (took me a bit of thinking to come up with the right word to describe them) for a game that was suppose to be a light wargame.

Chance of nomination: Unlikely in the pre-WWII category but has a shot at best graphics because...well because the graphics are fantastic. Had the game itself been better I think the graphics are good enough to win. Problem is the graphics award tends to go to more popular games rather than the best graphics.

The problem here is the "3rd edition" tacked on after the name. That's just about the only problem with this fantastic game. That and the colors on the stands but I am not going to flog that dead horse...ok, maybe on whack.

Chance of nomination: Unlikely since it will be considered by to many to simply be a reprint. However the fantastic graphics (and the mapboard) might be enough for a nomination.

Chance of nomination: 50-50 on this one. Again there is the whole series thing but Dean Essig has won more CSRs than anyone else and this series has a rock strong following.

This in a rock-solid tactical game detailing the fighting in Mogadishu, 1993. There was a bit of buzz when it was released and the LnL tactical system definitely has it's fans. Day of Heroes is the first release with the revised core system rulebook, which is an improvement over the previous versions (which weren't bad at all). If it were nominated I think it could beat Fields of Fire for best modern game based on the problems with the FoF rulebook. Another one that will be interesting to watch.

I see that España 1936 (yes I have ñ in my keyboard ) can be nominated, so I add it here, not because I think that the game may/should win, but because I would like to know what do you people think of this game and the possibilities of making a nomination.

BTW I have no relationship whatsoever with the game, actually I haven't even played it (the Spanish Civil War is too close home to play it I guess). I just wanted to know if you will consider it for nomination.

(Brian if I don't meet the conditions feel free to delete this entry)

Should be a lock to be nominated for Wargame Graphics. The components are opulent by wargaming standards, and have certainly raised the bar for wargame production quality.

EDIT: Although the game itself is far too light to receive serious consideration for any other categories.

Ok, before you cast stone, I just wanted to put this up for discussion. I believe it was on the list and eligible and while I didn't nominate it, for obvious reasons, do you think there are enough OCS fans out there that might have voted for it to get a nomination?

I'm not talking about deserving or anything else, but on BGG Hannibal, which was clearly a reprint won the golden geek.

Also SPQR deluxe could fit in this category, any thoughts generally on reprints?
