With the return of Derek K and Bill (we've missed you both!), La Crosse Gamers had the highest attendence this week that we've seen this summer. Diving in to everything from breweries to Vikings, with a side of Skeletons and Halflings...you never know what you're going to get with our crew!

We meet Thursday evenings every week to play games of assorted lengths and complexities. If you are in the greater La Crosse area you are welcome to join us!

Information and a schedule of game nights is available at www.boardgames.meetup.com/495.

We also have a guild on BGG. It is here: / www.boardgamegeek.com/guild/43

Our two returning gamers settled in with two regular attenders to attack Fire and Axe: A Viking Saga. Dennis owns the game, but has never won. Travis has played the game as much as Dennis, but has also never won. Unfortunately for them both, Bill made sure this streak continued!

My personal favorite comment from the evening was that Derek K tried to tell everyone very early on in the game that Bill was going to win. However, since everyone knows that Derek's strategies is to pin the attention on someone else to make them a target, and then swoop in for the kill. Luckily we've gotten wise to him, and apparently it didn't help this time!

Bill - 185
Dennis - 154
Travis - 127
Derek K - 123

(Note: This is a change in scoring from last night. I received the following urgent e-mail from Travis this morning...

"Please add 19 points to my score. This morning I was contemplating my sorry performance and wondering what I didn't do enough of, and I remembered that I never counted the bonus points on two of the Saga cards I had. Eight points for trading in Antioch and eleven points for settling Hvarf which ended the game. (I told everyone earlier in the game that I should just take the victory point counters so I wouldn't forget about this, but they poo-poohed me!)"

Sorry Derek K, I guess you'll have to come back next week for a re-match!

Our next table brought out Goldbrau for the first time. It seems like the consensus was that the players enjoyed the game for a first play, and would like to try it again soon.

Mike - 83
Mark - 76
Erick - 72
Amy - 49

I had not played this game yet because every time I asked someone about it I was completely confused. From what I understood, you chose a race, and then had to judge when your race should go into decline. I also knew that flying was a possibility. That darn English language! The entire game made MUCH more sense once I learned that we were talking about race, as in genetics, rather than race, as in running with your feet. Good greif!

A first time play for all of us but Brian, my skeletons had a strong opening, quickly sending Brian into decline. However, after much ado from Derek M over how low all of his scores were in each round he promply schooled us all in the end.

Derek M - 92
Mandi - 84 (won tie breaker with 12 race tiles out)
Brian - 84 (11 tiles out)
Nancy - 77

From the Brewery on to Ancient Rome, table two decided to try their hand at taking control of Roman factions. Apparently I was not the only one having comprehension problems, as Nancy could not figure out why Vestial Virgins belonged in a game about newspapers. (The La Crosse Tribune is our local paper).

Mike and Eric - 28 pts (tie for first)
Mark - 2nd
Amy - 3rd

With an hour left, our table decided to move on from Small World to Qwirkle. I must confess this is the most fun I've ever had playing this game if for no other reason than something in this game turns our quiet-natured Brian into a sarcasm machiene. Who knew he had it in him? (And did you guys know that he can fly small planes? How did I miss that?) I think my favorite was his progression of literally clapping his hands and "Tee-Hee-Hee"ing because his next move was going to be so good, to "Oh, you took my move. I guess I'll just have to Qwirle instead." It was no shock to any of us that when he came out in first (or maybe that was just because I put him in charge of keeping score...)

Brian - 116
Nancy - 106
Mandi - 104
Derek M - 80

As the other tables were wrapping up, Derek K and Travis decided to throw down a quick game of Fjords. Derek wasn't even going to track the scores, but Travis did some quick math on the side to get it recorded. (My guess is that's because it's been so long since Travis has logged a win!)

Travis - 17
Derek K - 15
