I arrived at Origins on Thursday after a seven hour drive with my daughter and son-in-law in tow. After checking into the hotel, it was back to the convention center to check things out.

Spent a few hours wandering about, looking at the auction, the Battletech pods and checking out the game play going on in the Board and War rooms so I had the lay of the land for Friday.

(Let me start off by apologizing to my worthy opponents this weekend as I neglected to write down names!) There were at least a half dozen games of this going on both in the War room and the overflow area.

First game up was Combat Commander: Europe. We played Scenario 5 - Frozen in Time. I chose the Russians.

This was my first full game face to face and my opponents first game of CC ever. Fortunately, there were plenty of other games of CC going on and we were able to get our questions answered quickly and move forward with the game.

It was a tense game of back and forth until suddenly, things all seemed to move my way. We were one time trigger away from Sudden Death when I made several Opportunity Fires and every one of my shots hit; my opponent was down to one lone unit and decided at that point to surrender. Whoa!

This was my free game for purchasing a Board Room ribbon. Sweet! I love free! Looks like a nice little game.

I then rolled a D6 and also won Ticket to Ride: The Dice Expansion
.

Since I don't have the base game for this - not sure if I'll buy that or trade this away.

Jeff Daugherty from Clash of Arms was setting up to play a game of this with someone who was on their way, but he took some time to give an overview of the game and suggest if we had questions, we could head down to the Exhibit area and talk with the game's designer Steve Cunliffe. Headed down and watched him finish up a demo with Mike then sat down to have a go of it myself. I played a quick one turn/one city game. This has moved WAY up on my list of wants. It plays fast and intense and the balance swings back and forth throughout the game.

I watched a number of other games played throughout Origins and every one I saw was exciting.

Watching a rules explanation of Finca at the Rio Grande booth was next. Stuck around and watched part of the four player game. It definitely looked like something I would like. Move around the wheel, harvest your fruit, sell it at the market, get your VPs. But don't hoard - or you may lose it all.

Watched some test playing of this. Jason Matthews, the designer, was sitting in making notes on the rules. There were a couple of different games of this going on, and I found myself drawn back to it several times.

So I'm a history geek. So sue me!

There were Carrom tables set up in the Board Room, as well as at the Exhibitor's booth. Sat down and played my first game of this. Flick, flick, flick...no manual dexterity and even less ability to calculate the rebound. Of course I lost. But it was fun!

After a dinner break, back to the War Room where an intense game of Storm was in progress. Also going on at the table was a game of Kassarine Pass (MMP) and Combat Commander going on everywhere.

Although this lasted until quite late, I couldn't leave until I saw the conclusion. As much as I enjoy things involving Normandy, I can see I am going to have to expand my horizons to Stalingrad.

On Saturday, I got a chance to meet Uwe and talk to him about all of his games. In the middle of a discussion on AtB and SoS, I saw the prototype box cover for his new First Men In: Normandy 1944. Bingo! This one I will definitely pre-order.

I loved the fact that at Origins you have the chance to talk to the games' designers. What better way to get a feel for the game, the subtle nuances that go into its creation, and their enthusiasm for what they have developed.

I got a chance to talk with Uwe Eickert about this and his upcoming games. I actually sat down with his son Gunter to play this for my first time ever. True to form, I played the Russians.

I truly appreciate Gunter's patience in walking me through the rules and the game. As I seem to gravitate towards playing as the Russians, I did so again in this. Needless to say, I lost to a far more experienced player, but the game - which was already on my wish list - was very enjoyable. And although I have become a bit more judicious in what I am purchasing right now, this one, the new Storms of Steel and Normandy (especially Normandy!) will all be future buys.

On Saturday, I got in another game of CC:E. We played Scenario 29 Operation Repulse. The Germans and the Americans rushing out to capture and recover the gliders of supplies in the middle of the frozen fields.

A tense back and forth game that reached Sudden Death far too soon it seemed. After totaling the points it appeared I had lost by 2, until we realized that my 5 VPs from the last objective had not been added and I ended up winning by 3. Although I must say, had we realized I had won sooner (before we started packing up), and the initiative had been tossed my way, I would have continued playing. This is honestly my favorite game these days, and I can't get enough either playing or watching.

Now was my chance to play. I sat down for a two player game and away we went, harvesting the fruit and taking it to market in with our little donkey carts.

I decided to grab some of the six VP markers as soon as I had the chance, but was having some difficulty getting the run of 1-6 to get the bonus VPs. I feared my strategy had backfired until we added things up at the end of the game and I had won 63-54.

Nice, light, quick and very enjoyable as a two player game. I can see how it might play a bit differently as a three or four player, but it is one I can see myself playing again in the future.

Saturday night I sat down with a group including Tim from Boardgame News and Charlie from Charcon to play a few games. This was up first. Although some had played this before, it was new to me. I'm a huge fan of the Mystery Rummy Jack the Ripper, so had wanted to give this one a try.

We decided to play two hands to give us the chance to get in some other games as well.

This game is very easy to pick up and although I was a bit concerned about the introduction of the car and its movement up and down the board - seemed a bit hokey when explained, it does add an interesting element to the game.

Next up, pirates!! Before we even played the game, I loved the design of this box and the fact that when you open the "treasure chest" you see the graphics of the gold coins underneath.

Rather than just strictly being a roll and move game, this has an additional element that you chose Day/Night (left and right) to put our dice after you roll them, then decide on your actions to match that. You have three cards in your hand, and chose one per round. Each card has two actions on it - either movement forward or backward or cargo to put in your hold. When you move, some spaces require payment in food or gold, others are free, and some let you take a treasure. But beward, some of those treasures are negative!

Landing on a space with another ship introduces battle. Just be careful when you win a battle and steal another pirate's treasure, it might be -4!

Pirates are fun. Big, honkin' wooden dice are fun. Pillaging and plundering are fun. Yeah, I liked this one too.

The last game I played was Bombay. Pink elephants?!?! Yep, but not from drinking. In this game you have three action points per turn. You can use them for movement, buying, selling and building. Plan wisely.

Now, I am know there are correct terms for the elements of the games - clients, rupees, palaces. But we had a lot of fun with "a babe and buck" and building our "toll booths" on the silk trade route.

This is a game where you need to keep your eye on where you are and what turn it is, otherwise you may find that you can't quite get where you want to sell that last silk bale.

I was surprised there is nothing on his nearly completed game Campaign Manger 2008. This is a reworking of 1960: The Making of the President for the McCain-Obama Campaign. Christian graciously showed us the game late Saturday night and even offered to let us play, but it was late and we declined. Thinking back, I sure wish we had taken him up on the offer, as it looks great.
With a smaller footprint than 1960 and a focus on the battleground states and issues, this is new game looks to be a great one when it comes out later this year.

Finally, it was Sunday morning. Time to take take one last turn around the exhibit hall and Board/War rooms. Tony, who was camped out in the same spot for nearly the entire Con was finally done with Combat Commander - I think he played that same scenario 10 times! Sorry it never worked out for us to battle.

There were a few games going on. Although I would have loved to have played Le Havre with the group that was setting up, the timing just wasn't right.

With the car packed up, it was time to be a Sunday driver and head back to Wisconsin.

Did I have fun? Yep, it was a blast! Will I be back next year? I'm not sure. Although I loved the games that I played and watched, I'm not sure this is my cup of tea. I will be going to BGG Con in November and I'm eager to compare the gaming experience. I think that may be more my style. As much as I enjoyed wandering the exhibit hall, I just wasn't that in to paying full retail for the games. I can support my FLGS and still pay less.

Meeting the game designers was great - and seeing their prototypes in play. And to all of my fellow BGGers and CSWers that I met, thanks for the chat and the games.

My daughter and son-in-law are more into CCGs and RPGs than I am. They had a great time and are already planning on returning next year.
