This geeklist is inspired by an catastrophic turn of events that occured just this evening. Unfortunately it has left me bummed and only the knowledege of other, significantly worse, blunders can soothe my aching soul.

Read all about my Board Game Purchase(s) Gone Awry and add your own stories. Let's reminisce the times that opening our latest find left us disturbed, devastated, or deeply disappointed.

Inspiration for the list.

I found a used copy on Craigslist and jumped at the opportunity. Mostly a Eurogammer, I have been interested in dabbling in some dungeon crawl games. This classic couldn't be a better place to start.

Comments on the game said it looked complete and in excelent condition, so I make my way 30 minutes over the boarder (into PA) to take a look and make a great purchase.

The box was in very poor shape but inside I found the components in top quality. The furniture was all assembled but the cards looked unused, the DM cover had never been folded, all the minis were there, even the dice stuffed way in the back. I payed my money and happily headed home.

About 20 minutes down the road I realized that there was not something I remembered seeing. I could not believe I could have overlooked it and opened the box expecting my fear to be relieved. But, alas, upon examination, the most necessary and obvious game piece was gone: the game board.

I could not believe that in my examination of the game I had forgotten to check if it actually contained the board! Needless to say, terrible hit to my mood the rest of the evening.

Another Game Purchase Gone Awry that I remembered after considering this GL.

I had high hopes for Roma when I first read about it on BGG and it quickly moved to the top of my wish list. Happily and unexpectedly my girlfriend bought me a copy for Valentine's Day (2008). I was so excited about the game that I actually skipped a weekly Ultimate Frisbee pick up game to play immediately (I never miss Friday UF).

I opened the box and examined the (I believe) beautiful components. Then I took the deck of cards out of the cellophane and quickly shuffled them for a learning game. Through the course of the game we got both a Basilica and Mercatus onto the table (both of which play off of the Forum) but never saw a Forum. Surprised we reviewed the rules and found that there are 6 differnt Forum cards in the game. Looking more closely at the deck of cards I found that my deck had NONE. In fact, most of the building cards were missing and replaced by duplicates of other characters. I was distraught.

For the next few weeks I played (and loved) Roma using small pieces of paper with the names of the correct cards taped on. Functional, but not very flattering. I was exstatic to recieve a replacement set of cards from Queen games soon thereafter, though I had to navigate a mostly German website to submit my complaint (nevertheless, thumbs up to Queen Games for their quick and fair reply).

Found a cheap copy at Goodwill.

Opened the box at home.

Unpunched counter sheet: thumbsup

Board in great condition: thumbsup

Most of the plastic ships and planes: AWOL soblue

Happy ending... found a copy on eBay for just 99 cents!

Combined them to create a copy.
